    Help a struggling first and second grade

    reader. Become a volunteer literacy

    tutor!According to a May 22, 2014 article in theSapulpa Daily Herald, the State's ReadingSuficiency Act, passed in 2011, requiredstudents to score satisfactory on a singlereading test administered at the end ofthird grade in order to be promoted. HB2625 relaxed that standard, and studentswho score unsatisfactory will be evaluatedby a panel of local parents and educators todetermine if they move on to fourth grade.

    In Sapulpa, 34 of 248 third grade

    students who took the reading testscored unsatisfactory and were injeopardy of not passing.

    In Kellyville, 19 of 83 students were in

    jeopardy. Mannford reported 12 of 89students.

    Ten other districts redacted numbers

    for state and federal privacy laws.

    To become a Caring Grand tutor, one mustattend CCLP's free Tutor Trainingworkshop. Knowledge of another languageis not necessary and no prior teachingexperience is required. This workshop willbe held Thursday, August 7, 2014from 9amto 2pmat the Library Annex, 15 NorthPoplar Street in Sapulpa. Lunch is provided.

    Our Caring Grands tutor one-on-one withirst and second graders who struggle inreading, equipping them with the tools to

    become successful readers before enteringthird grade. Caring Grands are seniorcitizens who have successfully passed abackground check and have been trained ata full-day tutor training workshop. CaringGrands meet with their students for one-on-one tutoring at least 30 minutes at leastone time weekly during the school year.Caring Grands helpstruggling readers early onwith additional assistancein reading instruction sothey are better equippedto score a proicient scoreon the Oklahoma thirdgrade reading test.

    Our presenter, Donna Hall,received her Masters inReading fromNortheastern StateUniversity and is aCertiied ReadingSpecialist. She is a National

    Board certiied teacher inEarly ChildhoodEducation. Donna hastaught in the elementaryschool setting for 18 years,and for the past two yearshas served as a REAC3HInstructional Coach,providing training andassistance to 14 schooldistricts.

    Carolyn and Mei havebeen working together

    for two months.

    Carolyn is a retired LibraryMedia Specialist with Glenpool

    Public Schools. Carolyn also taughtspecial education at McLain High School inTulsa for nine years.

    Mei is from Liu Zhou, Guang Xi, China, andhas lived in the United States two years.

    Their tutoring lessons include learningproper nouns, names of businesses, highwaysigns, health centers, and banks.

    Carolyn and Mei have made several ieldtrips including Gilcrease Museum, FarmersMarket and Marys Little Quilt shop.

    Tutors and Learners Corner

    Adults who are interested in improving their reading areencouraged to contact Creek County Literacy Program, whichprovides free one-on-one tutoring to adults who either cannot reador who would like to improve their reading skills. Anyone whoknows someone who could beneit from this service is urged to passthis information on.

    Creek County Literacy Program has been making a difference inCreek County since 1989. Creek County Literacy Program offersreading instruction, testing and tutoring to Learners at no cost.

    Nearly 150 adults beneitted last year from the free instructionprovided by Creek County Literacy Programs volunteer tutors andinstructors.

    Seventeen percent of adults in Creek County 18 years or older do nothave a high school diploma, and 4% of adults in Creek County 18

    Creek County Literacy Program Seeks Adult Learnersyears or older do not have a 9thgrade education. Statewide, morethan 400,000 Oklahoma adults are functionally illiterate.

    Financial Literacy GraduatesPlease welcome our irst class of Earn Your Future FinancialLiteracy Graduates! Our instructor did a fantastic job over the sixweek course discussing different topics such as Identity Theft,Managing Your Money: increasing income and reducing expensesUtilizing Cash, Checking and Savings Accounts, Obtaining andManaging Credit and Household Insurance.

    The program assisted attendees in developing their own personainancial plan. Sessions include handouts, an introduction tocomplimentary technology, shopping activities, a cookingdemonstration and brainstorming sessions. By the end of thecourse, attendees were able to create their own easy, practicalinancial plan to improve their inancial future.

    Did You Know Nationally, 43% of Americans are functionally illiterate*. Statewide, more than 400,00012%of Oklahoma adults are

    functionally illiterate*.

    17% of adults in Creek County 18 years or older do not have a high school diploma.

    4% of adults in Creek County 18 years or older do not have a 9 thgrade education.

    Childrens literacy levels are strongly linked to the educational level of their parents, especially their mothers.

    One child in four grows up not knowing how to read.

    85% of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate. More than 60% of all prison

    inmates are functionally illiterate.

    On average, an illiterate adult earns 43% less than someone with a high school diploma.

    90% of welfare recipients are high school dropouts.

    *Functionally illiterate is deined as lacking the literacy necessary for coping with most jobs and many every day situations. These

    individuals read so poorly that they do not have the skills to properly ill out a job application, read a recipe card, read/dispute bil

    or read a prescription label.

    Creek County Literacy Program is committed to promoting and achieving literacy for adults, children and families.
