Max’sMemos

Sometimes Getting Lost ... is Part of the Plan.

Have you ever taken a different way home, that you’ve never taken before?

Maybe you needed to try a shortcut or just wanted a change of scenery. In these instances, the decision to leave the normal routine was your own.

But, sometimes it happens due to un-foreseen circumstances; an unexpected detour or a faulty GPS device. Some-times you find yourself in unfamiliar surrounding and it’s not too enjoyable. In fact, it’s downright scary.

Well, that very thing happened to me recently and I sure wasn’t too happy

about it. I found myself lost, confused and unable to tell my head from my tail.

Unsure of which way to go, I just kept wandering around in circles until I col-lapsed into a heap. Wearing out not only myself, but also a small circular patch of grass that now laid beneath me.

I had been so afraid to make the wrong decision on how to find my way home... I made no decision at all.

And that my friend, was terrible.

Sure you can say, that I had made a deci-sion; and that decision was not to make one. In fact, until this happened to me, I might have agreed with you. But let’s

clear this up right now—not making a decision, is not always a choice we make; sometimes it’s a natural occurence we are forced to confront, A strange and wonderful detour that we call ... Life.

I’M HoME noW. SAfE AnD SoUnD.

I’ve learned something I’d like to share.

If you ever find life has dealt you a difficult challenge you haven’t asked for; remember this advice...

“Don’t be afraid. The paths you choose are irrelevant as long you keep moving forward. Everything will be all right.”

Home, is always, right in front of you.”

Rush Inter Pet CemeteryCrematory & Funeral Home

National Pet Memorial DayAnnual observance - open to the Public

Sunday, September 8, 2013 Noon - 2pmnational Pet Memorial Day, observed each year on the Second Sunday in Septem-ber, was established by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries in 1972. Although there has been no legislation to make it official, it was thought that there should be a special day to remember our pets; and using the initials SSS helped make it easier for people to remember when the special day is.

Since Rush Inter Pet Cemetery opened in 1979 (34 years!!) they have held an annual observance for national Pet Memorial Day.

This is a nice day for people to come together, to meet and talk about their pets. Rush Inter Pet is always happy to see families who have established friendships because of the common bond they share... the love of pets.

In the past, Rush Inter Pet has held picnics with pony rides, ostriches and dog sled demonstrations. Many times visitors have enjoyed obedience, agility and fly-ball demonstrations. one special milestone was celebrated with a butterfly release!

for years now, Rush has remembered our pets with a beautiful candle lighting ceremony hosted by their friend, Rev. Kathy Smith. families place candles in memory of their pets on a memorial table. Kathy then offers a heartfelt blessing and lights the candles.

Also in the past few years, another friend, fern Hilsinger has offered a native American Blessing, which is enjoyed by all with her bells, drums, feathers and singing.

Rush Inter Pet truly enjoys hosting this annual event and invites you to be a part of this year’s celebration. For more info, please call: (585) 533-1685.

A Pet carrier that is safe and keeps your pet out of harm’s way is an ideal choice. Your

home, car, or even an airplane can all board this convenient accessory. They prove to be really helpful es-pecially for small pets. It is the best means to keep them secure from other pets thus saving them from potential harm. So, it is important that a pet owner understands how necessary and purposeful these car-riers are.

There are a variety of basic attri-butes that the carriers must have.

1. Securely Hold Your Pet In order for your pet to remain se-cure, a quality carrier should come equipped with a belt to hold the pet in place. If you are traveling in a car, a quick jolt may bang them to the floor or slide them about uneasily. Therefore, it is vital that they re-main secure to avoid any unwanted accidents.

2. Protect the car interiors To protect the inside of your car from getting destroyed, todays’ pet carriers come with a washable cover. These covers are practical and handy since they keep the in-terior of your car clean from pet hair and dirt.

3. Provides a comfortable ride The pet carrier puts your pet in safe hands. In addition, you can get por-table carriers equipped with handles at the top so transporting your pet is substantially easier while traveling. It decreases stress if your pet is safe and sound and relaxed as you move it from one place to another.

4. convertible Pet carriers The primary reason for using a convertible pet carrier is to allow your pet to be transferred safely from one place to another. Con-vertible pet carriers fold down so they make great spacesavers and also ultra convenient. This makes them very practical and provides great flexibility.

5. Storage compartments Pet accessories can be easily orga-nized using the storage compart-ments to prevent frustration when trying to locate an item for your pet. A good quality pet carrier is long lasting and serves its purpose.

Training your pets before traveling is necessary if they have never jour-neyed in a carrier before. Be under-standing and help your pet adjust to the different and strange environ-

ment of a carrier; which may take a bit of time for them to adapt to.

As you travel on out-of-town trips, your pet will enjoy going with you. And since it doesn’t matter what size your pet is, their carrier will accommodate them comfortably. If given a choice, your pet would always prefer traveling with you in lieu of staying home alone or in the care of someone unfamiliar.

Large pet carriers become your pet’s personal lair and can comfort-ably accommodate your dog, cat, or rabbit while you are traveling by plane, train, or automobile. Gener-ally, the size of the carrier should enable your pet to move freely and to fully stand inside of it. This way, your animal friends will remain pre-occupied and amused throughout your long trips and prevent them from chewing items they shouldn’t have.

If you need a large pet carrier that keeps your pets secure; a wire pet crate is a good option. This car-rier was made to ensure the secu-rity and comfort of your pets while presenting a practical means for you to take your precious pets ev-erywhere you roam.

keeping Your Pet cool in the Hot monthsHappy Summer! As tempera-

tures soar, and the sun beats down, be sure you are aware of the dangers of extreme heat to your pets. Always be sure your pets have fresh, cool water to drink. If your pet is outside, be sure to keep the water dish filled, and in the shade, so that it doesn’t get heated by the

sun. Also, make sure there is adequate shelter or shade protection, especially from the mid-day sun and heat. A fun and refreshing summer treat idea is to freeze your dog’s Kong, or similar toy in a block of

ice or frozen chicken or beef broth. You can give the frozen treat to your pooch outside, so they can keep cool and busy in the summer sun.

Keep in mind that cars can be po-tential death traps during both the summer and winter months. Inside temperatures can climb to more than 120 degrees fahrenheit, even on a mild day, so it’s best to leave your pet at home while running errands during the summer. If you cannot avoid leaving your pet in the

car when it’s hot, be sure you do so for the shortest possible time, no more than ten minutes before at least checking in on your pet, and be sure the windows and vents are open as wide as possible without providing an escape route. If pos-sible, you should also have fresh water available in the car. Pet$aver sells a product called “Too Hot for Spot,” a thermometer for your car that indicates when it is safe to leave your pet in the car, and when it’s too hot or cold.

Keeping your pet well-groomed will also help them to stay cool. Long hair and hair mats can make a pet overheated, so be sure to clip and cut or shave them to help cool the animal. Have a great summer with your pet and stay cool!

Taking along man’s best friend on your boating

trip could be a great adventure for both you and him/her. For your furry friend boating is like riding in his dream convertible with a blast of sun and fresh air from all directions. Nose in the air, ears blowing in the wind and his/her favorite people; what could be better!

Most all dogs have mastered the famous “Doggie Paddle” but it’s always important to stay as safe as possible. Your dog should always wear a life jacket when both in and near the water. That holds true even for breeds of dogs that tradi-

tionally love the water and take to swimming quite easily.

Such breeds include the following: American Water Spaniel, Barbet, Boykin Spaniel, Bedlington Terrier, Cantabrian Water Dog, Chesa-peake Bay Retriever, Curly Coated Retriever, Epagneul Pont-Audemer, flat-Coated Retriever, Golden Re-triever, Irish Water Spaniel, Labra-dor Retriever, Lagotto Romagnolo (a.k.a Italian Water Dog,) nova Scotia Duck Toller, otterhound, Portuguese Water Dog, Spanish Water Dog, Standard Poodle, new-foundland , Puli, Wetterhound

When taking your dog on water re-lated outings it’s important to keep the following 5 items in mind.

1. A towel just for your dog

2. A shirt or sweater made out of water-resistant material

3. A non - spill water bowl and lots of fresh bottled to put in it

4. A pooper-scooper and a trash bag or two

5. A life jacket for your dog

Another tip to consider is shade for your friend. Even though your dog may have many opportunities to jump into the water, it’s important he/she has a cool relaxing place for resting. Boat surfaces, such as fiber-glass, can get extremely hot in the sun. Dogs absorb heat through the pads on their feet so be sure to pro-tect them. Your dog will surely be enjoying himself/herself so much that excitement could hide the fact he/she is overheated.

now that you have most everything covered pick the perfect day to go have that amazing adventure with your whole family! Always keeping safety first, your dog is bound to have the time of his/her life. Enjoy your trip!

Responsible pet owners know to not leave their pets alone in vehicles during the hot summer

months. It’s dangerous, sometimes deadly and in most regions; against the law.

But there’s dangers in your car from the harsh sun rays of summer whether the whole family is cruis-ing down the road or parked with the air condi-tioning on.

The amount and speed of heat build-up in car inte-riors can be reduced drastically by a professional window tinting service. As a result, your car be-comes a safer place for you, your children, and your pets. With auto tinting, waiting in the car is more comfortable, safer and less likely to cause heat related illnesses.

That’s why, we at Petpalooza chose to tint the win-dows of our famous Pet-Mobile. We always have passengers; both human and hairy and we want to make our road trips enjoyable for everyone.

After tinting we realized the Pet-Mobile cooled down quicker and ... stayed cooler longer. That was one ben-efit we had expected, but another one we hadn’t even considered was a

WindoWTinT

Makes Good SenseThe summer months are approaching us and we all enjoy the company of our pets at the park, on a walk or the family barbeque. When going on an outing

with your pet keep in mind a few very important tips.

DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS to summer street festi-vals. The pavement becomes excessively warm to the human feet and we have shoes or sandals protecting the bottom of our feet. Our pets sweat and perspire through the pads of their feet. When the pavement and sidewalks are warm their pads are in danger of burns.

During the summer months it is important to have wa-ter available for your pet and keep them cool. Hydra-tion is very important for your pet in the heat. Your pet can also suffer from dehydration and heat stroke. Some of the signs of heat stroke include: excessive panting, dark or bright red tongue and gums, sticky or dry tongue and gums, staggering, vomiting, seizures, bloody diarrhea. If you suspect that your pet may be suffering from heat stroke you MUST seek Veterinary Attention Immediately. In the meanwhile, find some shade, use cool water on his/her feet and neck. DO NOT use ice water that may restrict the blood vessels too quickly. Offer ice cubes to lick, do not force them to eat or drink. When a pet is suffering from heat stroke it can affect the liver, kidneys and brain func-tions.

One of the more alarming concerns is leaving your pet in a vehicle. It is illegal in many states to leave your pet in a vehicle unattended. It is also considered Animal Abuse to leave a pet in the vehicle in extreme heat. A seventy degrees day can translate to extreme heat inside your vehicle. The temperature inside the vehicle is ten to fifteen degrees above the temperature out-side. If you choose to leave your pet in the vehicle you

Baby bird season is in full swing and not only do we have the widest variety of

of course many people who come into the store already have a bird/birds, but many are just in the beginning stages of determin-ing whether or not a bird would be right for them and if so, what spe-cies would best fit their life. There are many things to consider when determining if a bird is the right thing for you. For example, What’s your living situation like? house, apartment? Rent, own? how close are your neighbors? Etc. There are a few species that we see do well in apartments, but most are loud! Very loud! It’s the nature of the beast and if noise is a factor then a bird may not be the right pet for you.

other factors to consider are family life. Do you have small children? Are you planning on

starting a family in the next 10-20 years? Most larger species will live much longer than that and many of the larger species don’t mix well with small children. Kids are noisy and messy and so are birds. In general the louder your child gets, the louder your bird will get and when your child is consuming much of the attention that you used to dote upon them, there’s a good chance your bird’s going to get even louder. Not to mention a large beak on an intelligent bird can easily and quickly inflict a lot of pain on a small curious finger. It’s only fair to the bird and the child that this challenging dynamic be considered. That being said, there are some birds that work well in a

one lucky pooch’s journey from abandoned dog to beloved pet is tugging at

the Internet’s heart last month.

on the Redditor website “flibber-tygiblet” shared her dog Ringo’s story in a moving series of Imgur photo-graphs.

“Was going through some pics today and realized how much Ringo has

really changed in the 8 months I’ve had him. Decided to share, because it’s such a happy tale,” she wrote on Reddit. The photos have since gone viral. The Redditor, who told the HuffPost that she only wanted to be identified by her first name Crystal, said she first encountered Ringo at the end of September. Emaciated and suffering from a bad eye, Ringo was “so scared he wouldn’t look at me,” Crystal wrote on Imgur.

The 30-year-old brought Ringo back to her West Texas home and planned to rehabilitate him before finding him another family. What she didn’t anticipate, however, was that Ringo would soon steal her heart.

Two weeks after Crystal brought him home, she said Ringo ‘smiled’ for the first time.“I will never forget this moment. I’m standing there with the treat in my hand, willing him to face his fears and look in my general direction, and he turns to me with this goofy grin on his face. That did it, I was in love,” she wrote in a caption that ac-companied this adorable snap.

over the next few months, Ringo gained both weight and confidence. He also learned to socialize with humans and other animals.

It wasn’t all smooth-sailing, however. Ringo’s bad eye started giving him trouble so surgery was planned.

“His eye was getting worse and he didn’t feel good a lot of the time. We scheduled to have it removed and

decided that we better just go ahead and keep him forever,” wrote Crystal in the Imgur gallery.

Recovery was difficult, Crystal says, as Ringo suffers from a blood clotting disorder, which resulted in a “mas-sive amount of swelling.” But soon enough, he’d gotten much better.Ringo’s story has spread like wildfire on Reddit.

dog with health problems? Many, if not most, people would have just put him down. You’re one of the good ones,” one Redditor wrote in response to Crystal’s post.

But the animal lover, who has other pets at home including five cats, insists that she’s done nothing extraordinary. It’s Ringo who’s special, she says.

“I’m blown away by the response he’s gotten. He totally deserves it, but its very weird to have people calling me a saint. I assure you, I’m no saint, I just really love my dogs,” she told the HuffPost in an email.

“The goofball bunch. He may not be very good looking to most, but I think Ringo’s the most handsome guy in the world,” Crystal wrote of this recent snapshot.

may face animal cruelty and impounding of your pet. If a pet is in the car, use drive up services when possible and plan ahead to ensure your pet is not left in the car.

If your summer time fun is spent at the pool not all dogs are able to swim. Use a flotation device designed for dogs to initi-ate them to the water. Never put your dog into the pool and expect them to swim. Introduce them gradually to the pool and be sure your pet knows how to get out of the pool if necessary. A pet flotation device is highly recommended when taking your pet out on the boat. If

you pet should fall over board they may panic and not be able to swim. Always be sure to rinse your pet off after swim-ming. This will assist in removing the chlorine and particles from the local lakes and creeks. If your pet does drink the water from the pool it may also cause and upset stomach and vomiting.

Keep your pets clear of lawns that have been sprayed or treated with pesticides or lawn fertilizers. Many of the chemicals contain poisons that can be transferred to their paws and fur.

Summertime fun may include fireworks and they may be very disturbing to your pet from a noise and visual perspective.

If you are planning to use fireworks, never use them with your pet in the area. This may cause a fear and alarm to loud noises including thunder and lightning.

The summer is a time to enjoy the weather and outdoor activities as a family. Be aware that your pet is also a vital part of your family. They too want to enjoy the summer months with you. Be safe and keep them cool. Happy Summer to all from Tuxedo’s K9 Train-ing Camp and be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

family setting and can make good pets for young people a few exam-ples would be, Cockatiels, English Budgies and Bourke’s Parakeets.

once some of these bigger factors have been addressed, the next thing to consider is budget and time. how much do you want to spend? There’s a large range in the initial cost of all the birds we have here. As well as the cost of monthly up keep. It’s important to be realistic about cleaning and handling as well. No matter how your schedule changes, your birds

going to need tending to on a daily basis. Fresh food and water are of course essential and needed at all times and your birds going to learn to expect the amount of physi-cal handling and contact you give it in the beginning. Many people spoil a bird with affection in the very beginning and inevitably can’t maintain that level of attention and then the bird begins to seek the attention it once got so readily often by engaging in behaviors that are not so pleasing such a screaming or feather mutilation. once time and budget has been considered, then we can really get

to the heart of the question and determine what species of bird would be a good fit for your life. Do you want your bird to talk? Be playful? Be colorful? What kind of traits appeal to you? We love help-ing people answer these questions at the store and it helps the new pet owner and the staff here feel confident that we’re sending the bird home to the right environ-ment for them.

welcome surprise! We began to notice a dip in the amount of fill ups at the gas pumps since we weren’t running the AC non-stop. That’s a huge plus with gas prices nearing $4 a gallon.

Another perk of window tinting is that it offers various levels of privacy for all those along for the ride. Some pets, and some people, really appreci-ate that factor and helps to keep them calm.

There are many more benefits but I’m running out of writing space so I want to finish with these two very important facts.

ALL TINT IS NoT CREATED EquAL.And, even more crucial, is the fact ...ALL INSTALLERS ARE NoT CREATED EquAL.

After doing our intensive research, Petpalooza chose to go with Hi-Line Window Tint, in Rochester, NY and we couldn’t be happier. The service was top notch and the materials they used were of the highest quality.

... a little humorMrs. Biddle was walking down the street one day carry-ing a small box with holes punched in the top.

“What’s in that box?” Mrs. Riddle asked.

“A cat,” Mrs. Biddle answered.

“What for?”

“I’ve been dreaming about mice at night, and I’m scared of mice. The cat is to catch them.” “But the mice you dream about are imaginary,” said Mrs. Riddle.

Mrs. Biddle turned to her friend and whispered, “So is the cat.”

A couple of dog owners are argu-ing about whose pet is smarter.

“My dog is so smart,” says the first owner, “that every morning he waits for the paperboy to come around. He tips the kid and then brings the newspaper to me, along with my morning coffee.”

“I know,” says the second owner.

“How do you know?”

“My dog told me.”
