Judy Bailey

Born in Auckland, New Zealand and raised in Whangarei, Judy Bailey began formal piano studies at the age of ten, obtaining her ATCL diploma just six years later. She moved to Australia in 1960 andimmediately became involved in the musical life of Sydney through regular performances at thelegendary El Rocco Jazz Cellar with John Sangster, Don Burrows and Graeme Lyall, to name but a few. For eight years, she also worked as pianist / arranger with the Tommy Tycho Orchestra (Channel 7), Don Burrows‘ Septet (Channel 2), John Bamford’s Orchestra (Channel 9) and JackGrimsley’s Orchestra (Channel 10).

Music took a back seat to family in the late 60s and early 70s, as Judy immersed herself happily inraising her two young children. In 1973 she began to resume her performance career, taking on theposition of resident pianist for the ABC Radio program Kindergarten and introducing ‘music andmovement’ programs for young children at Currambena and Lane Cove West Primary Schools.

That same year saw Judy become a founding faculty member in the internationally respected Tertiary Jazz Studies Program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music – where she continues lecturing to this day.

At the behest of the Australian Government, Judy together with her jazz quartet travelled to SouthEast Asia on what was to become the first of three international concert tours organised by MusicaViva. During this time she was also appointed Musical Director (Jazz) for the immensely successfulBennelong series at the Sydney Opera House.

The 80s and 90s saw Judy expanding her performing, composing, arranging, teaching, recording andtouring activities as she took on the role of Musical Director of the Sydney Youth Jazz EnsembleAssociation. A major part of her work there has been the big band Jazz Connection, which under herdirection has built up a fine track record for ‘feeding’ potential students into the Jazz Studies Programat the Sydney Conservatorium.

Moving into the new millennium, Judy has been gradually shifting her focus towards teaching, education and composition, while still maintaining her active performance career.

Judy’s achievements have been officially recognised through many awards and public accolades: theinaugural APRA Award for Jazz Composition, an Australian Entertainment Industry ‘MO’ Award for JazzPerformance, and in 2004 an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) for Services to Music and Education.

More recently, Judy had the honour of performing solo at the Sydney Opera House at a private functionfor the world leaders attending the 2007 APEC Summit. In January 2008 she was named one ofSydney’s Top 100 Most Influential People in the Sydney Morning Herald’s Sydney magazine.

In July 2008, as part of the APRA–Australian Music Centre Australian Classical Music Awards, Belinda Webster (Tall Poppies Records) and Peter Rechniewski (Sydney Improvised Music Association)presented Judy with the Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music: the first time this awardhad ever been granted to a jazz musician, and a long-overdue acknowledgment of the music that createsa fusion of the classical and jazz genres.
