A MESSAGE FROM

YOUR ALISA CHAPTER PRESIDENTS

Quotes for Living “The way to get started is to get talking and start doing!”… Walt Disney “You are never too old to set another goal or dream another dream!”… C.S. Lewis

We have completed a very active and rewarding year, 2019. We have welcomed many new members to our Alisa family. Alisa has held exciting events: Theatre party, RBG Trip, Auschwitz Museum Trip, and Membership Appreciation/Myrtle Wreath Dinner. Tiby and I want to thank all of you who worked so hard to make these events so successful.

As we welcome in the year 2020, We want to let you know that we anticipate another very successful, fun-filled year. This is a year that we are going to see Camelot at Playhouse 22, have a Fashion Show at the Forsgate Country Club, and for Purim you will have the opportunity to send Mishloach Manot to your Alisa friends. So keep your eye out for these and other exciting events we have planned. Although we love to have fun and enjoy the events, we must keep in mind that Hadassah is a Zionist Organization with serious goals. Some of our 2020 goals are:

Focus on how to fight the growth of Anti-Semitism

Help raise funds for the Hadassah Medical Organization

Support the 360 degree of Healing Full Circle Campaign

Renew our commitment to the Hadassah Mission

Increase our Alisa Membership

Become an active member of Alisa! Step Forward! Do not sit on the sidelines!

Hadassah Mission Statement

Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, is a volunteer organization that inspires a passion for and commitment to the land, the people, and the future of Israel. Through education, advocacy, and youth development, and its support of medical care and research at Hadassah Medical Organization, Hadassah enhances the health and lives of people in Israel, the United States and worldwide.

About Hadassah

Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc., was founded over a century ago, before Israel was a state, and before women could vote. Since that time, the organization has remained unwavering in its commitment to women’s health and well-being, to Israel, and to Jewish values and continuity. But while Hadassah’s heritage and mission remain as strong as ever, the role of women and Jewish culture here and in Israel, has evolved over time. The organization, too, has evolved, taking on new challenges and developing new programs.

Hadassah believes in building a world where our Jewish values in action create strong community and an enduring Israel. That’s why our entire focus is on connecting and empowering Jewish women to effect change. We’ve done this for over 100 years and we will do it for the next 100—advancing health and well-being, advocating for women, and building community in the US and Israel. We invite all women who share our interests and passions to join in—to put their values into actions with us and through our programs.

ONLY IN ISRAEL!!

At the Cutting Edge of Eye Care

In the words of Dr. Lavi, a senior ophthalmologist and surgeon at Hadassah Hospital, "I love it. People start seeing after they are blind for so many years ...and seeing their grandchildren, or just doing these simple basic actions, like reading a book," says Dr. Itay Lavi, a senior ophthalmologist and surgeon at Hadassah Hospital. Ophthalmology

surgery is the Mount Everest of surgeries -- and he's always scaling new medical heights, from cornea transplants to new grafting techniques. In the latest Hadassah On Call podcast, Dr.Lavi talks about the thrill of the incredibly fast pace of technological advances at Hadassah Hospital's Ophthalmology Department and says he is looking forward to its new home in the expanded Round Building at Hadassah Ein Kerem, where he will have more cutting-edge tools and room for more patients.

Contributing and supporting Hadassah is much more than supporting two hospitals in Jerusalem. This month we are highlighting

Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America.

…the Chagall Windows in the Abell Synagogue

In the last bulletin we presented Hadassah’s Perpetual Yahrzeit which ensures that Kaddish will be recited every year on the anniversary of your loved one’s passing. On that day, the name of the departed, and the comforting words of Kaddish, will be recited in the Fannie and Maxwell Abbell Synagogue located in the central square of Hadassah Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, home to Marc Chagall's iconic windows.

In this issue we are presenting the Marc Chagall windows.

"This is my modest gift to the Jewish people who have always dreamt of biblical love, friendship and of peace among all peoples. This is my gift to that people which lived here thousands of years ago among the other Semitic people." Marc Chagall, February 6, 1962

The light that emanates from the twelve stained glass windows bathes the Abbell Synagogue at the Hadassah University Medical Center in a special glow. The sun filters through the brilliant colors of the stained glass capturing their radiance. Even in the misty haze of a cloudy day, Chagall's genius transforms time and space.

The synagogue's Jerusalem stone floor and walls absorb this beauty and reflect it. Standing within the simple square that forms the pedestal for the windows, gazing up at the vivid imagery, the Jewish symbols, the floating figures of animals, fish and flowers, even the most casual viewer is overwhelmed by their power and presence.

Every pane is a microcosm of Chagall's world, real and imaginary; of his love for his people, his deep sense of identification with Jewish history, his early life in the Russian shtetl.

"All the time I was working, I felt my mother and father looking over my shoulder; and behind them were Jews, millions of other vanished Jews -- of yesterday and a thousand years ago," Chagall said.

The Bible was his primary inspiration, particularly Jacob's blessings on his twelve sons and Moses' blessings on the twelve tribes. Each window is dominated by a specific color and contains a quotation from the individual blessings.

Chagall and his assistant, Charles Marq, worked on the project for two years, during which time Marq developed a special process for applying color to the glass. This allowed Chagall to use as many as three colors on a single pane, rather than being confined to the traditional technique of separating each colored pane by a lead strip.

The synagogue was dedicated in the presence of the artist on February 6, 1962 as part of Hadassah's Golden Anniversary Celebration. Reprinted from Hadassah Medical Center article: http://www.hadassah-med.com/about/art-at-hadassah/chagall-windows

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020 Amongst all the interesting things to look forward to in 2020, our annual Theatre & Dinner Party is at the top of the list. It will be held Sunday, June 14, 2020. We will be seeing Lerner & Lowe’s musical, “Camelot.” So hold the date and join us for the story of the “Once and Future King.”

Todah rabbah (many thanks) to Tiby Lapkin's grandson for delivering the last of the black knitted hats for the IDF soldiers in Israel. We will no longer be continuing with this project, and thank all those who have knitted and contributed all these years. It was quite a mitzvah, and good while it lasted!! Submitted by Arlene Lazar

Thanks to the small group of Hadassah Associates who have been working with Alisa and Monroe Chapters, we have raised more than $14,000 for Hadassah’s men’s health care initiatives. Unfortunately, unless Associates in our community come forward, this annual project will no longer be able to continue and additional vital dollars will be lost.

Our annual events have been exciting, informative and enjoyable. Chances are our speakers would not have come here had it not been for our Associates invites and energies. For example, we heard the Czech Republic’s consul general, a young Lutheran-born woman who fought the KKK and neo-Nazis in her hometown of Billings, Montana, and a Baptist minister from Tennessee whose father saved 200 Jewish prisoners of war in Germany. We had as a guest a New Jersey resident who successfully sued Iraq for terrorism, we heard Marc Chagal’s granddaughter, we honored Israel, and the list goes on.

In addition to helping plan future programs, enjoying the comradery of other men with similar interests, Associates will kvell from knowing that you are helping contribute to Hadassah’s men’s health initiatives. Please call Associates President Manny Strumpf at 203 641-2063 or Alisa Chapter Liaison Associate Rhoda Juskow at 609 409-0983.

Hadassah tidbits David Ben Gurion asked Hadassah to build a new, modern medical center in West Jerusalem that would be the finest in the Middle East. In June 1961, a magnificent hill of healing opened in Ein Karem overlooking the majestic Judean hills. The centerpiece of the campus was the Round Building. Our grandmothers, aunts, and many, many others built this incredible medical center, and now it’s our turn to expand and modernize it

Hadassah tidbits

Hadassah is the founder of Israel’s modern health-care system and has been tireless in maintaining the highest standards for more than 100 years. Since1960, the population of Jerusalem has tripled, and the demands on the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) and Hadassah Hospital at the Ein Kerem campus have grown exponentially. Hadassah must respond—and we must look forward. So HMO begins, first by completely reimagining the iconic Round Building, the hospital’s original inpatient center at Ein Kerem. With this renovation and expansion, the new Round Building will be an important healing center for Israel. It will significantly advance the services in its outpatient surgery, oncology, and dermatology departments.

Hadassah 360 Vision

Chaim Weizmann (1874-1952) By Phyllis Kundel

Chaim Weizmann was born in the village of Motol, Russia, the 3rd of 15 children born to Ezer Weizmann, a lumber transporter. His parents stressed the importance of education. Chaim attended an Orthodox school, as his family practiced Orthodox Judaism, and he went to Pinsk to continue his studies in the sciences, but then was denied university entrance and left for Germany and Switzerland to study chemistry. In 1900 he obtained a doctorate degree in Switzerland.

He married Vera Chatzman in 1900 and they moved to England where, as a researcher at the University of Manchester, he discovered a revolutionary way to synthesize acetone, a major ingredient in explosives at that time, providing valuable assistance to the British government. This connection would assist Weizmann’s Zionist negotiations for a Jewish Homeland.

Throughout his career, Weizmann’s role in the Zionist movement became more important. He played a vital part in the writing of the Balfour declaration in 1918 by the British government which stated in part: “His Majesty’s government views with favor the establishment in Palestine of a National home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object…”

Also, in 1918, Weizmann was elected as the head of the world Zionist Organization and traveled the world relentlessly fundraising for Zionism. He was re-elected to this position several times.

When, in 1939, war broke out in Europe, Weizmann conferred with America and England on ways to better synthetically produce rubber. He also helped establish the first Jewish Brigade in the British army.

After the war, his political career deteriorated and in 1945 he denounced an attack on the British government by Jewish extremists in Palestine. Although this angered many in the Zionist movement, he was still a figurehead in the Zionist movement.

In 1948 he was sent to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Truman: This was one of the most important meetings in the history of Israel. Weizmann’s meeting with Truman led to the United States recognizing Israel when it became a legitimate country in 1948. It also provided a $1,000,000,000 loan. With the creation of the new State of Israel, Weizmann was elected its first president in February, 1949.
