Great Moments of 2017 @ Joslyn Art Museum

European Galleries ReinstalledAll five galleries housing the Museum’s collection of European paintings and sculpture were renovated and reinstalled, presenting a more engaging narrative and updated scholarly interpretation. Highlights included several significant new acquisitions and iPad stations for in-depth exploration.

Completion of $6.2 Million Capital ProjectInstalled a backup generator capable of supporting both Museum buildings and replaced the Scott Pavilion roof, completing Joslyn’s most recent infrastructure improvements plan.

Wild Spaces, Open Seasons Exhibition Joslyn was one of four co-organizers of this nationally-touring exhibition, featuring work loaned from 33 museums and nine private collections.

Bijoux Parisiens Exhibition & Gala Presented the Museum’s first-ever exhibition devoted to the art of jewelry. Over 400 guests attended the related Joslyn Art Museum Association Gala, which raised a record $387,875.

Maximilian’s Journals Now in One Volume Published Travels in North America, 1832–1834: A Concise Edition of the Journals of Prince Maximilian of Wied, a condensed edition of the original Journals three-volume set, highlighting the expedition’s most significant encounters and events.

Education & Outreach Joslyn engaged 131,811 people through programming in 2017: 23,945 people visited for group gallery tours; 12,587 people ex-plored art media in studio pro-grams; and 44,500 people interacted in the creative space ART WORKS: A Place for Curiosity.

Growing Attendance Concluded the year with a total annual attendance of 193,215 making 2017 the third highest attendance year in Joslyn history, excluding the years when attendance was greatly bolstered by the Jazz on the Green outdoor concert series.

Mentor Program RecognitionThe Kent Bellows Mentoring Program was named a 2017 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award Finalist (one of 50 selected from 342 applicants) by the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
