Our hearts were overjoyed with the success of the Harrelson Center’s inaugural Thankful Hearts Luncheon, which raised over $50,000! There were over 150 guests at the FBC Activities Center on November 16th, showing an immense amount of support for the Harrelson Center. The lunch was graciously provided by Middle of the Island, music was provided by Three for a Dollar and the program was led by Mr. Harry Williams, our Board Chair. An educational video was shown during the luncheon, made by Hoggard Senior Garrison Cooke. Everyone also had the joy of hearing from Kitty Yearkes on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, Dean Chance spoke about how the Harrelson Center has helped him lift up in life, Mr. Bobby Harrelson shared the events

of his life that led to his origi-nal donation to the Center, and Jerri Holiday sang, “You Lift Me Up”, to end the day. We cannot express how grateful we are for the kind and generous hearts that attended the Luncheon to support the Center. We would

like to also thank all of our sponsors and volunteers who were an investment to our success.

Families Were Blessed at Christmas at the Cove

Over 120 children were blessed with gifts and love through Christmas at the Cove. Generous members of First Baptist Church donated hundreds of gifts to give to needy families served through the Harrelson Center. In addition to gifts, the children were able to play games with the FBC Youth Group and take away a fun nativity scene picture. These families couldn’t express their gratitude enough, and they were especially grateful for the outpouring of love and gifts from FBC. Thank you First Baptist Church and Annie Adams for inviting our Harrelson Center families to experience this special event!

Cape Fear Habitat Has New Executive Director Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity has just announced their new executive director, Steve Spain. Spain has many years of expe-rience in the nonprofit industry, including 7 years as executive director for Interfaith Hospitality Network. The Harrelson Center is excited for Habitat and especially happy Spain is a part of the Center!

Featured Partner: Wilmington Area Rebuilding MinistryWARM is truly an asset to the Wilmington community through their services of help-ing the elderly, disabled and those living in poverty to have a better and easier living situation. They provide assistance by building wheel chair ramps, fixing roofs, repairing floors, providing heat in the cold winter and much more. For 2012, WARM helped a total of 142 residents in the area. WARM is an asset at the Harrelson Center, as they collaboratively work with several organizations in the building, including Habitat for Humanity. “Our location down the hall from our valued partner, Cape Fear Habitat for Hu-manity, played a crucial role in our recent collaborative grant application, which was fully funded. Being close not only made the grant writing process easier, it has fostered friendship and trust between our staff members which will be essential when administering the grant funds”, states JC Skane, WARM’s executive director. WARM is now gearing up for their 2013 Raise the Roof Gala to be held on June 21, 2013 at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, so make sure you save the date! If you are interested in volunteering with WARM or attending the Raise the Roof Gala, call 910-399-7563.

No Courtyard Sale for 2013The Harrelson Center will not hold the Courtyard

Sale fundraiser this year, however, if you have donations please donate them to the Cape Fear

Habitat ReStore. They are in need of items at both of their locations, 1208 S. 3rd Street and their new

location at 7330 Market Street. Call (910) 762-4744 for more information. We appreciate all of

your past support for the Courtyard Sale!

Generous Hearts Are Doing Great Things for The Center

Beth Grace RunWe could not be more proud of Beth Grace, who ran a 26 mile marathon in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 9th! Not only did Beth have this incredible goal to finish a marathon, but she also made it her goal to raise awareness and funds for the Harrelson Center. She recruit-ed a generous donor to match these donations dollar for dollar with an additional gift from his matching organization. With all of the support from Beth and her friends and family, along with the matching donations, Beth raised over $9,000 for the Harrelson Center!! Congratulations, Beth, on your amazing accomplishments and thank you for your generous support for the Harrelson Center!

Drive for a CauseDoug Barbour, owner of Capital Ford Lincoln Wilmington, generously coordinated a Drive for a Cause event to benefit the Harrelson Center

on December 8th. For every test drive taken at the event, Ford Lincoln Wilmington donated $20. The event was held on December 8th, and be-

cause supporters of the Harrelson Center took a few minutes of their day for a test drive, we raised over $800! Thank you to all of our volunteers

that day and thank you to the staff of Ford Lincoln Wilmington!

Crafting for a CauseBeth Trice, from Welcome Lane Designs, has created a new event to raise money for First Baptist Church missions, with the very first beneficiary being the Harrelson Center! Whether they were an avid crafter or a first-timer, everyone had a wonderful time making cute Christmas crafts. Thank you Beth! Keep a lookout for the next Crafting for a Cause event in March! Christmas Light Show

Ross Marino strung up about 40,000 lights for an incredible light show in his neighborhood this past Christmas. To show extra holiday spirit, Ross decided to accept donations for several local nonprofits, one being the Harrelson Center. Ross Marino’s light show raised several hundred dollars for the Center! Thank you Ross for taking your talent and using it to make a difference in the community!

Two Board Members We Will Surely Miss! Two dedicated board members, Berry Trice and Mark Dudeck, are rolling off the Harrelson Center board this year. Mark served 3 years on the board and was critical to the success of our Strategic Planning Committee. Berry Trice served 7 years on the board, acting as president for three of those years. We could not have been more blessed to have these two hard-working individuals on the board. We will miss you both and we are very grateful for the time you spent with us!

Upcoming EventsMarch 21st- Planned Giving Educational Seminar- come learn how you can make an everlasting gift to the Harrelson Center. Time TBD.

Tara Ford takes an annual girls trip with her best friend, Jan Bennett, to a different city each year. On each trip, they pick a nonprofit to help in some way, and do so in mem-ory of their dear friend, Gail Heiss, who was a part of their annual girl trip before she passed. When Tara and Jan were planning a trip to Wilmington in August, they decided to help the Harrelson Center. They noticed that our current need listed on our website was a need for a bike rack. They contacted us for details and graciously ordered us a bike rack

and a plaque which reads, “In memory of Gail Heiss, Girl’s Trip 2012”. Tara and Jan were able to visit us from Florida while they were in Wilmington to tour the Harrelson Center. The bike rack is utilized everyday and helps to make people feel welcome at the Har-relson Center.

Thank you, Tara and Jan, for your generous donation and we are so happy you decided to help the Harrelson Center on your girl trip to Wilmington!

If you would like to help the Harrelson Center with a current need, please visit www.harrelsoncenter.org or call us at 910-343-8212.
