The word "legend" is often used to describe veteran folk/rocker Jonathan Edwards, whose 1971 million-selling song "Sunshine" ("go away today...") brought him instant fame. He was born in Minnesota and detoured into blues and rock before realizing he was hooked on folk music. During his 36-year career he has recorded 15 albums, per-formed throughout North America and in Holland, and collaborated with artists such as Emmylou Harris, Jimmy Buffett, Maura O'Connell, Christine Lavin and Cheryl Wheeler. His 1987 children's album, LITTLE HANDS, was selected by the National Library Association as a "Notable Children's Recording."His varied career has included theater, commercials, record production, and 2 movie soundtracks. He narrated and performed in the Media Artists series “Cruising America's Waterways”, which started airing on PBS-TV stations in 2001. "Sunshine" can be heard in the 2004 Will Ferrell movie, "Anchorman". His most recent CD, “Live in Massachusetts” was released in December, 2006, and Media Artists just released a 90-minute documentary of his career, “That’s What Our Life Is”.

Beyond launching an exciting relationship with a new label, the vibrant collection finds Forbert in the midst of a true career renaissance at the wonderful age of 52—a time in his life he reflects upon wistfully on the sly nar-rative of the uptempo, horn driven tune “Middle Age." This is his eleventh release of the decade, a roll that began with Evergreen Boy in 2000 and included four live recordings in addition to a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album for Any Old Time: Songs Of Jimmy Rodgers--a tribute to “America’s Blue Yodeler” who was the first country music superstar (and a native of Forbert’s hometown, Meridian, Mississippi). In 2003, Geffen released Rock While I Can Rock: The Geffen Years, which featured material from two albums Forbert released on the label, 1988’s Streets Of This Town and 1992’s The American In Me. In October of 2006, Forbert was inducted into the Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. In addition to ten original vocal tracks and the easy rolling, country flavored instrumental “Around The Bend” (Forbert’s first non-vocal song since “Lucky” on 1980’s Little Stevie Orbit), Strange Names & New Sensations includes a new rendition of “Romeo’s Tune” that captures the folk-pop side of the singer’s artistry, complete with organ and harmonica. Recorded primarily at Moondog Music, the Nashville-based studio owned by leg-endary E-Street Band member Garry Tallent—who plays bass and co-produced the title song--Strange Names & New Sensations finds Forbert working with numerous longtime friends and collaborators, including primary album co-producer Tim Coats (who first worked with Forbert as engineer on Mission of the Crossroad Palms; producer Anthony Crawford (whose relationship with Forbert extends back to his vocal contributions on The American In Me); and keyboardist Paul Errico and drummer Roger Clark, both of whom played on Jackrabbit Slim. Since I was, say, five years old, I’ve been intrigued by songs. They’ve got so much power and information packed into just a few minutes. All these years later, I’m glad to still be in the world of songs.”

Nearly 28 years since breaking into pop consciousness with his second album Jackrabbit Slim and its infectious Top Ten single “Romeo’s Tune,” Steve Forbert remains a master of songs offer-ing clear-eyed insight and plain-spoken, heartfelt eloquence. On his 429 Records/SLG debut, the well-traveled Nashville-based troubadour—who maintains a busy touring schedule of over 100 dates a year — explores his ongoing fascination for Strange Names & New Sensations with characteristic wit, a sense of social consciousness and the ever-present romantic optimism that has endeared him to two generations of folk/rock fans.

Jim Photoglo has musically spanned four decades as both a songwriter and artist, bringing his unique creative voice to the R&B, Pop and Country arenas. Growing up in Los Angeles, he began playing in bands as a teen-ager but never considered music as a "career" until he was in his early 20's. Photoglo reminisces, "I wanted to get out of L.A., so I took to the highway 'James Taylor' style with an acoustic guitar, a sleeping bag and a lot of time to think...and all I thought about was music." Returning to Los Angeles with music as a career goal, Photoglo began paying the usual dues. He took every kind of gig from playing in a funeral band to putting together a group to back John Belushi's "Joe Cocker" imi-tation at a party for Paul McCartney. His solo career took off when he was signed to the Twentieth Century Fox label in 1979, culminating in a pair of Pop hits: "We Were Meant To Be Lovers" in 1980 and "Fool in Love With You" in 1981. Photoglo hit the TV talk show circuit, toured the Orient twice, and opened for the Beach Boys on a national tour. By the time his third album was released, the financially- troubled Fox label was unable to properly launch the project, and once again Photoglo took to the road. "This collection from Nashville-based singer/songwriter Photoglo finds the highly regarded tunesmith in a romantic and reflective mode. Home, love, and domesticity are recurring themes, beginning with the longing of the title cut and holding true throughout. Photoglo crafts highly accessible songs in the Fogelberg/JT mold, and this time out he co-writes with some of the best, including Paul Williams, Gary Burr, Jon Vezner, Matraca Berg, and Bob DiPiero. The whole package is mighty easy on the ears, with the largely acoustic arrangements suitable for both country and AC/adult standards formats. While his songs are often recorded by other artists, Photoglo delivers them himself with passion and conviction, whether it's the reluctant rebellion of "The Road To Jackson County", the hopeful optimism of "A Job Well Done", or any of a half-dozen love songs that could help any would-be Romeo get lucky." - Billboard, June 10 2000

He began to take up instrument after instrument, finally opting to concentrate on fiddle and mandolin. Dur-ing the next three decades, he made his mark as a sideman, session player, headliner and composer. His first recording session was an uncredited mandolin set on Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks. He toured on a regular basis with Robin and Linda Williams, Norman Blake and the Rising Fawn Ensemble, and Chet Atkins. He also worked with the likes of Jethro Burns, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Johnny Gimble, Greg Brown, John Hartford and Taj Mahal, among a host of others.

As a solo performer, Peter has produced a number of recordings, including Down the Streets of My Old Neigh-borhood, Slüz Düz Music, and the three albums that make up his Heartland Trilogy: Heart of the Heartland, Pilgrims of the Heartroad and Sacred Heart. His latest is Meeting on Southern Soil, a collaboration with long-time friend Norman Blake.

Peter has spent more than 25 years as a frequent performer on A Prairie Home Companion, and for a few sea-sons, he did a stint as Music Director for the popular radio show. You may have caught Peter on TV, too. He's appeared on Austin City Limits, Late Night with David Letterman, even Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.

Peter, with his wife and daughter, still makes his home in Minneapolis. He continues to compose and perform. He can still whomp up a first-rate batch of borscht. And he still roots for the Twins. Some things never change.

When they write the book on Peter Ostroushko, they may mention that he loved his family and music and cooking and baseball. But there's no doubt they'll say he was one of the most accomplished instrumentalists and gifted composers of his generation.

The die was cast early on. Growing up in the Ukrainian community of northeast Minneapolis, Peter heard mandolin, balalaika and ban-dura tunes played by his father and family friends at get-togethers in their home and in church. It's the music that still echoes in Peter's memory and provides the basis for many of his compositions.

The musical road that led Peter to this point has had its share of twists and turns. He was still in high school when his career as a profes-sional musician began. Asked to compose and play the music for a one-man staging of A Christmas Carol, Peter fell in love with theater. Soon he was honing his skills at the Children's Theatre School in Minneapolis.

Dennis Stroughmatt and Creole Stomp is a nationally touring Creole, Cajun, and Zydeco band bringing the best in Louisiana French music and culture to audiences of listeners and dancers across the USA and Canada. Formed and led by French speaking Cajun/Creole Accordionist and Fiddler Dennis Stroughmatt, Creole Stomp is striving to not only entertain, but also to educate audiences about American French culture. Hav-ing lived in Louisiana and Quebec, Canada (and still touring with many Louisiana based Cajun and Creole-Zydeco bands in and out of Louisiana on occasion), Dennis only knows how to play it "down-home" and al-ways has a sound that is fresh and "straight from the bayous and prairies" of southwest Louisiana. The Creole Stomp sound pulls from many influences but is noted for a style similar to the famed Ardoin Family Band and The Lawtell Playboys.

Dennis and Creole Stomp have been seen and heard on radio and television with PBS-TV, WGN-TV, NPR's "Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keilor," CNN's "World Beat" on Mardi Gras, and on many stages including the Illinois State Fair, "The Louisiana Folklife Festival," the "Big Spring Jam" in Huntsville AL, the St. Louis Soulard Mardi Gras, "The Cajun French Music Awards" in Lafayette, LA, and "Mardi Gras World" in New Orleans, LA. The new CD by Dennis Stroughmatt and Creole Stomp Enfin...At Last was nominated "Best Album" by a Cajun/Creole band based outside of Louisiana by the Cajun French Music Association for 2003.

Dennis Stroughmatt and Creole Stomp travel thecountry carrying the long tradition of Mississippi River valley French Creole music to audiences of thousands. Not only have they caught the attention of Louisiana music fans across the United States and Canada, but also those who enjoy Blues, Rock, Country, Swing, Celtic, and Latin...all the while simply being who they are...a band that plays French Creole music to the core.

It has been brought to our attention that many of you would rather have the Newsletter available on line rather then through regular mail delivery. Due to raising postage and printing costs the board has agreed that this would be a great idea making it easily accessible to members at home and at work. You’ll be able to pass the Newsletter on to friend’s and family right from your computer. Economically it will allow us added funds to be used in the promotion of our great concerts and workshops. We will still print the Newsletter for commercial distribution allowing us to expand our ability to spread the word and it will still be available at concerts. The issue you are reading now will have a test run this month…give it a look see. The Newsletter-on-Line will be launched with the Dec/Jan/Feb issue due to be released in November. For those who still wish to receive the newsletter by mail please let us know by calling the TFFM voice mail at 757-626-3655 leaving us your name and phone number in mailbox #2.
