Term 1 Week 2A Monday 4 February 2013
REACH FOR THE STARS
The Gold Coast Stingrays Gridiron club visited our school in Week 10 of Term 4 2012 to take our Tal-ented Athlete students through their paces and in-troduce them to the world of American Football. With a basic introduction to the sport and some of the key rules and concepts our students where shown how to throw, receive, run and block opponents. We then broke up into 3 teams and were taken through some of the more strategic parts to the game with the students given the chance to follow some set plays and then create their own. Kaleb Green, Koen Sleba, Mekala Knight, Tye Gleeson, Nathan Glen and Emily Montford showed their tactical abilities by becoming the champions of our round robin on the day. A big thankyou to The Gold Coast Stingrays for their excellent efforts and coaching. Did you know ….. For a sport that only requires 11 players on the field at one time, a typical NFL squad will have over 60 athletes on their full time pay books.

From the Principal
Mr Greg Smith
Welcome back to the 2013 school year and a special
welcome to our new students and their families. We have
made a sensational start and I would like to take this
opportunity to thank both students and parents for the
strong support that they have given to the focus on im-
proved uniforms. I would like to particularly thank our
senior students and student leaders who have been pre-
pared to lead by example in this area. The vast majority of
students arrived on day 1 with plain black shoes. There
seemed to be no fuss and students readily responded to
our requests to wear the appropriate uniform.
We have one new permanent member of staff. Dr Bruce
McConachy is our new librarian and he has replaced Mr
Phil Whitehead who retired in 2012. Mr Phil Meehan has
had his contract extended and will not be commencing as
Deputy Principal at our school. Mr Bristow will continue in
the relieving role and we hope to have a permanent DP
by the start of term 2. Ms Marelda McLean will continue
as relieving Head Teacher English. Ms Jasmine Duncalfe
has replaced Ms Connah as SRC co-ordinator.
Staff have made numerous comments about the excel-
lent attitudes that our students have shown on their re-
turn to school. Our seniors have settled back into their
HSC preparations very quickly and we are very excited
about the year ahead.
There have been a large number of inquiries about buses
in the first week of school. Queries regarding eligibility
and application forms for surfside buses are available at
our school office. For queries about the issuing of a bus
pass, timetabling, or route information please refer to
Surfside Buslines at www.surfside.com.au then click on
Schools Services tab – if you still need further infor-
mation telephone 07 5571 6555, their staff are endeav-
ouring to respond to enquiries within 48 hours.
Our online marking of rolls will start this week but we will
hold off sending SMS messages until we are confident
that we have got the process finely tuned. When we go
live with the SMS messages, messages regarding unex-
plained absences will be sent out at 10.30am each day.
You do not have to respond to the SMS, but should sup-
ply your child with a note to bring the next day. If you wish
to respond to the SMS there will be a charge. If you have
changed your mobile number and haven’t informed the
school, please send a brief note with this information so
that we can update your details. The start of the year is
also an excellent time to update any other contact details
that may have changed.
During the year we will be focusing on improving commu-
nications with students’ families. Several information
meetings have been organised to assist students and
their parents at the start of the school year. Tonight (4th
February) there will be a meeting in the hall at 6.00pm
for Year 11 and 12 students and their parents. Next Mon-
day there will be a meeting of Year 9 and 10 students
and parents at 6.00pm. We are also holding a barbeque
for Year 7 and their parents to welcome them to our
school. This will occur on Thursday 7th February, also at
6.00pm.
Our first P&C meeting for the year is on tonight (4th Febru-
ary) at 7.00pm in the Administration area. We look for-
ward to seeing new parents come along. Our school will
continue to improve through strong community support.
The recent storms have resulted in a number of trees
falling over in our car park and other parts of the school.
These are currently fenced off and should be removed
soon. We sincerely hope that members of school com-
munity have not been too badly affected by the storms.
I look forward to working productively with all members of
the school community as we continue to strive to improve
learning outcomes for all of our students.

Tweed Valley Relay For Life
Have you been looking for a way to get out in the local area and
show your support for community events? Or trying to find a way to
lift moral and build team spirit?
Relay For Life events have been connecting individuals to communities in their fight against cancer and
raising much needed funds for cancer research and support. Participants have been walking or running to
inspire HOPE and prove that no-one is alone in the fight against cancer.
Have you been looking for a way to get out in the local area and show your support for community
events? Or trying to find a way to lift moral and build team spirit?
WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?
Relay For Life is an event, where teams take turns to walk, jog or run around a track to raise money for
Cancer Council NSW’s vital research, prevention and support services. The aim is to have one member on
the track at all times during the event.
With entertainment, activities and moving ceremonies through the day, it’s a great chance to come to-
gether to fight cancer.
Your local event is the Tweed Valley Relay For Life held on Saturday March 23rd & Sunday March 24th at
the Cudgen Leagues Club oval in Kingscliff.
GETTING INVOLVED IS EASY!
Register your team and create your online event page. A team can be 2 - 20 people made up of work-
mates, friends or family.
Raise funds by asking people to sponsor you. We’ll send promotional posters, fundraising tips and raffle
books to help you spread the word and get everyone excited.
Choose your challenge and work out how you want to Relay: Try to have someone from the team on the
track at all times. If you think 18 hours is too much, why not do the 12 or 6 hour challenge?
Decide on a fundraising target and go and exceed it! Make a real difference to the lives of those affected
by cancer. Work out how much your team wants to raise and tell everyone you know to sponsor you. Every
bit counts!
EVENT BENEFITS:
You are contributing to the fight against cancer!
You generate interest and goodwill within the local community.
Relay For Life is a great team building exercise for family, friends, work colleagues, sport clubs, schools and
community groups!
