Executive Director’s Note...

It was with great excitement for me that we held Hospice Niagara’s first Annual General Meeting in The Stabler Centre. More than 40 members participated in the process of renewing the leadership and governance body of the organization. Please take a look at the list of Board members listed in this newsletter, and whisper a quiet note of thanks to them when you see them for giving of themselves in this substantial way to the quality of life in Niagara. I have a personal debt to the retiring Chair, Sheryl Wherry, for her support and advice during my introductory days at Hospice Niagara. We look forward to the leadership of Chris Bangham.
The next grand event to take place at The Stabler Centre will be the celebration of serving our community for one year from The Stabler Centre. I have had feedback
from many individuals whose lives have been touched by the comfort and compassion shown in ways large and small by those who associate with Hospice Niagara. Every day working here is a good day due to the great heart of our team.
The staff Management Team is using the summer not only to personally renew and refresh, but to do some good solid program planning for the coming year. We will build up our services through new and strengthened partnerships and through affiliations in the community and our sector.
The focus on fundraising will continue at Hospice Niagara. The success of the “When Time is Precious” capital campaign realized our dream of a residential hospice. But operating funds will be an important and ongoing challenge for us and for our community. There is every reason to believe that the community is beginning to understand this, but let’s all do our part in generating the support necessary to maintain this kind of service for individuals and families at this difficult and important phase of life’s journey.
I also encourage you to take a moment and read the entire newsletter. The brief references to volunteers, fundraising, and the list of names of donors, each represent gifts of time or talent on behalf of those who are in need of our help. Honouring those who give by way of reading their names is an acknowledgment of the gift.

Joie de Vivre was a fun filled French luncheon on June 8th at Queen’s Landing that celebrated “All Things Spring!”. The event raised $2,230 through a silent auction for Hospice Niagara. Special thanks to White on White for organizing this event!
Creative Minds Group Garage Sale raised approximately $1,400! The garage sale was held at three different locations around St. Catharines. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped man the sales and loaned their front lawns. A great big thank you to our Creative Minds Group who organized this event.
Rotary Ribfest gave Hospice Niagara the ability to hold a 50/50 draw on August 3rd in Montebello Park which raised over $1,200. We would like to thank all the volunteers who helped sell tickets throughout the park, as well as the Rotary Club of St. Catharines for providing us with this opportunity.
Start Your Holiday Shopping Early! The Creative Minds Group has been busy making the 2008 angel. Over 500 angels are made every year and sold for $23 each to raise money for our many programs and services. Call the office today and order yours before they are all gone! And, don’t forget about the bears that are dressed in any number of personalized outfits. Both the angels and bears make a unique gift for your holiday gift list.
Butterflies& New Beginnings “What the caterpillar perceives as the end, to the butterfly is just the beginning.” A butterfly is one of the symbols Hospice Niagara uses with the children attending the Bereavement Support Program to help them better understand both death and life. On June 19th, approximately twenty Brock University Staff volunteered their time as part of a Wellness Conference and pursued this theme with a number of tasks they accomplished that day.
The room used for the Children’s Bereavement Program was painted a beautiful yellow and green in preparation for different coloured butterflies to adorn the walls. In addition, this group created a new flower bed for the children to plant bulbs in the fall as well as a butterfly bush and butterfly attracting plants in the spring. This was part of the larger project Brock undertook to do a spring clean-up of the grounds at The Stabler Centre. What a huge difference these wonderfully enthusiastic and energetic volunteers made in a day! We are so grateful to them for their hard work and dedication in helping bereaved children to feel comfortable and accepted, and to remember their loved ones.

New To Our Staff... We are pleased to welcome Alicia Arcangeletti & Teresa Wilson to the staff of Hospice Niagara.
Alicia came to Hospice Niagara in April 2008 as our Community Relations Officer. Her responsibilities include communications, special events and fundraising. Prior to Hospice Niagara, Alicia was Special Events Coordinator at Fallsview Casino Resort and Campaign and Communications Coordinator at the United Way of St. Catharines & District.
Teresa joined the Hospice Niagara team in July 2008 as our Bookkeeper. Teresa works freelance providing bookkeeping and administrative services.

each year there are certain opportunities that hospice Niagara has to recognize volunteers whose contribution is above and beyond the call of duty.
The City of St. Catharines hosts an annual Volunteer recognition event and invites organizations to nominate one of its outstanding volunteers to receive an award. This year hospice Niagara’s unanimous choice by staff as our “Volunteer of the Year” was rita harder. In the 3 years that rita has been a volunteer, she has endeared herself to clients, family members, staff and volunteers alike. rita volunteers in a myriad of ways – as a companion, kitchen helper, and craft facilitator at Day hospice; as a bereavement support volunteer with adult groups and on the grief walk; as a volunteer for clients in their homes as well as in the residence; answering the phone and greeting visitors at the welcome Desk of The Stabler Centre; helping with special events and office support,
and in every case rita can be counted on to make it fun. her tremendous energy and enthusiasm for each assignment is an inspiration to everyone on the hospice team.
The Ontario Volunteer Service awards are the means by which the government recognizes and thanks volunteers for their continuous years of commitment to an organization within the province. we are entitled to select 6 individuals who have volunteered with hospice Niagara for a minimum of 5 years to put forward to receive this prestigious award. On May 30th, in a special ceremony held in Niagara falls, the honourable Michael Chan, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, presented the 2008 Ontario Volunteer Service award to the following volunteers: Lynn Cook; gerry Korsmit; Madeleine Macgregor; gladys Bruce; Joy Dick and Marie-france Marcie. we congratulate all of these outstanding volunteers and thank them most sincerely for their combined 37 years of distinguished service to hospice Niagara.
SVOLUNTEER RECOGNITIONS
Hike for HospiceOver 100 participants walked the 5km route in the new neighbourhood of hospice Niagara – The Stabler Centre for the 6th annual hike for hospice held on May 4th.
The hike raised $25,400 – a record!
Thank you to all who participated in the hike through walking, pledging or volunteering. we would also like to thank all of the sponsors for helping us achieve this great success!

Beating the heat! Day Hospice celebrated the arrival of summer in style with a percussion picnic on the patio! On the last Tuesday of June, clients, volunteers and staff were treated to a mouth-watering buffet of gourmet sandwiches and salads, lemonade and a fabulous berry trifle; all prepared by our Day Hospice Chef, Wendy Nasmith. The day was topped off by an interactive drumming circle, led by Ruth Prentice and her assistants Walt and Edit. The rhythmic sounds of the drums and maracas resulted in a joyful jammin’ session.
