Neil faulkner’s design for the 2015 mother’s Day figure of the Year, Time Together, recreates a precious shared moment as a daughter spends time with her mother as she dresses for an evening celebration. Perhaps the daughter has had dab of foundation on her nose and a little spray of perfume! Now, as her mother is ready to leave, the young girl hands her the pretty purse that matches her dress.
The mother wears a rich pink dress which drapes from her bust and gently swathes her slender form. The gown’s cross over bodice is adorned with a hand-made rose and her gold earrings complement the clasp on her clutch purse. Royal Doulton designer Neil faulkner has taken references for this figurine from the designs of early 20th century costumier mariano fortuny, who popularised the use of finely gathered pleats in the silk dresses of the day. But Neil has added contemporary twists to the ensemble including the one-shoulder bodice, and the broad sash to the waist.
The soft red colour of Paula’s gown is complemented by a striking platinum tiara, earrings, brooch and bracelet, whilst she also holds a creamy lustre decorated clutch purse, and elegant red shoes peep out from below her skirts.

The name Wendy increased in popularity after J. m. Barrie’s novel, Peter Pan, written in 1904, featured a character called Wendy Darling. it’s likely that the name existed before this time although its use was rare.

The angel charm is symbolic of protection. There are many legends reaching back centuries attached to the significance of angels as guardians; the angel wraps his wings around the wearer providing protection from danger and offering help with decision making. One story of the power of the guardian angel dates back to Augustine Dupré, a skilled engraver who, in 1792, designed new currency for the King of france. His design included a picture of an angel on the new gold coins. Some years later he was in jail awaiting execution, but managed to escape. There are several variations of the how this happened including a tale of sunlight reflecting off the gold coin so intensely that the guard, awestruck, unlocked the cell door and Dupré was free! Ever since Angel Coins have been seen as a lucky protective talisman and many others have carried them, including, it’s said, Napoleon who discarded it on the eve of the battle of Waterloo, fishermen and fighter pilots from World War One onwards.

The four leafed clover has been a symbol of good luck since the middle ages, when children believed they would see fairies if they found and carried a four leaf clover. more recently the leaves have been taken to symbolise faith, hope, love and luck. A three leafed clover, or Shamrock, was picked by Saint Patrick to explain the doctrine of the Trinity and ever since it, and the colour green, have been linked to good luck.
The Charms Clover figurine wears a beautiful emerald green gown with a one-shoulder styled bodice, decorated with an embossed trailing leaf design highlighted with 24 carat gold. The horseshoe charm is a traditional symbol of good luck that’s often given to couples on their wedding day, and is considered to ward off sickness and misfortune. There is debate about which way it should hang, with many believing that ends should point upwards so that good luck floating by will be captured within and not fall out. Others believe it should hang with the ends pointing down, as it will then release good luck. its lucky symbolism derives from three legends; iron is seen as a good luck metal and one that drives away fairies, goblins and other mischievous spirits. A second tale suggests it wards away witches who are afraid of horses and a third legend recounts the story of St Dunstan who was a blacksmith. When the devil arrived at his door requesting that he be shoed, St Dunstan recognised him and then inflicted pain in the process of shoeing him. The devil pleaded for mercy and St Dunstan made him promise that he would never enter any house where a horseshoe hung.

There are many legends and myths connected to the star and its geometric symbol, the pentagram or five pointed star, was used by the ancient Greek mathematician, Pythagoras, to represent perfection. many ancient cultures and societies believed fortune was determined by the stars, and today it’s still thought that wishing on a star will help a wish come true. A royal commemorative figure has been designed to celebrate the birth of His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. modelled by Neil Welch, the 22cm figure depicts the first appearance of William, Catherine and the new prince on the steps of St. mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London, where the prince was born on July 22nd 2013.

Private John “Jack” Simpson Kirkpatrick was a stretcher-bearer with the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli during World War i. He became famously known for transporting wounded soldiers from the front line on the back of his donkey. for three and a half weeks Simpson made the treacherous journey up to fifteen times per day, often under fire. After 24 days he was killed by sniper fire, but his donkey continued to the beach with a wounded soldier on its back.
The bravery of this “man with the donkey” soon became the most prominent symbol of Australian courage and tenacity on Gallipoli. Simpson and his donkey are immortalised in statues at the Australian War memorial in Canberra and melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance and he has come to embody the Anzac legacy’s greatest traits of mateship and selfless sacrifice.

Carols were originally songs with a chorus or refrain that accompanied a dance but over the centuries the meaning of the word became more specific – and described songs or hymns expressing religious joy, especially at Christmas. Carols and Christmas songs have continued to evolve and now also reflect the witty and more secular aspects of the season.
Jingle Bells is one of the most popular of festive songs. it was written in the 1850’s by the American songwriter and composer, James Lord Pierpoint. At that time jingling bells were very necessary as a warning on horse drawn sleighs, which otherwise hardly made a sound as they glided over the snowy ground!

Silent Night is one of the most popular of Christmas Carols, the lyrics were written in 1816 by father Joseph mohr and the melody was composed two years later by franz Xaver Gruber. it was first sung at a midnight mass on Christmas Eve in 1818 in St Nikolaus Church, Oberndorf close to Salzburg in Austria, but has since been recorded by many famous singers.

White Christmas is one of the most successful Christmas songs of all time. it was written by irving Berlin in 1940 and was first performed by Bing Crosby the following year and eventually recorded in 1942. The lyrics are short but succinctly express nostalgic memories of an old fashioned Christmas from the snow to Christmas cards and from the merriment of the festival to the sound of Santa’s reindeer. Less well known is the first verse – which places the singer surrounded by green grass and palm trees in hot California yet wishing to be in the cold north. Singers as diverse as Elvis Presley, Doris Day and michael Bublé have recorded versions.

Silver Bells was written by composers Jay Livingston and Ray Evans in 1950 for a Bob Hope film. Believing that there were too many Christmas songs, Jay and Ray were initially unenthusiastic about the commission. However, after being inspired by the tinkle sound made by a small bell that happened to be in their office they wrote the now classic song.
The lyrics reveal how the delicate sound of the bell is synonymous with the excitement of late December - of ‘children laughing’, ‘snow crunching’ and ‘shoppers rushing’. The song was first recorded by Bing Crosby and Carol Richards but many other famous singers have performed it and it is one of the most popular songs of the Christmas season.
Silver Bells is wearing an elegant green coat fastened with a brocade belt and trimmed with fur collar and cuffs, and, naturally, she holds a pair of bells. A traditional Dr Zhivago styled hat completes the chic winter outfit.
