Building Surveyor

The George F. White Group has a fantastic opportunity for a Building Surveyor within the Commercial Team We are looking for a talented and ambitious Charted Building Surveyor, with at least 5 years’ experience post chartered. This is an exciting role for the right person, with genuine prospects for career progression. The position is based in our Newcastle Upon Tyne office covering Tyne & Wear, as well as assisting in our other regions as required. It offers the opportunity to join an expanding team with a reputation for excellent client service and quality of advice. You will be involved in a diverse range of projects at various scales in residential, commercial and mixed-use developments, working in a multi-disciplinary team of chartered planners, valuers, surveyors and architects.

Key responsibilities include:

• Building surveys (Commercial/Residential) • Building works (JCT Contracts) • Legal Compliance • Dilapidations • Measurement and office design • Schedules of condition • EPC • Energy Solutions / MEES • Project Management • Landlord and Tenant

We are looking for someone:

• With a sound knowledge and application of relevant legislation, Health & Safety regulations and

industry compliance • Who is organised, self-motivated, efficient and performance driven • With established interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills • Who seeks out new opportunities • With experience of development management and a desire to learn and progress • To analyse complex situations and provide reasoned practical advice • Who is commercially aware, with an ability to network and generate work on their own merit. • To be a key part of our experienced and friendly commercial team

You need to:

• Be a qualified Chartered Surveyor with at least 5 years’ experience post chartership • Have excellent written, verbal and presentation skills • Have discretion, confidentiality honesty and transparency • Be IT proficient and confident working with plans and maps • Be presentable, versatile and robust; inspiring confidence in your abilities • Hold a full and current driving licence and daily have the use of a car insured for business purposes.

Through collaboration between our multi-disciplinary specialists, we are known for spotting development opportunities and providing sound guidance and comfort ensuring that the process is clear, fully understood and maximised value. Whilst firmly involved in the commercial team, you will always need an eye on the economic aspects of your work and the drivers for our clients. You will be given a high level of responsibility and independence to look after some trusted and valued long term clients, as well as fostering new work and developing relationships with new clients on your own merit.

To assist in the delivery of a cost effective, responsive, high quality Client orientated commercial service. The role will include the following, (which is not exhaustive):

• ensure projects are completed on budget and to schedule; • ensure JCT building contracts are used as appropriate; • advise clients on schemes and projects and determine requirements; • prepare scheme designs with costings, programmes for completion of projects and specification of

works; • organise documents for tender and advise on appointing contractors, designers and procurement

routes; • determine the condition of existing buildings, identify and analyse defects, including proposals for

repair; • advise on energy efficiency, environmental impact and sustainable construction; • instruct on the preservation / conservation of historic buildings; • advise on the management and supervision of maintenance of buildings; • deal with planning applications and advise on property legislation and building regulations; • assess and design buildings to meet the needs of people with disabilities; • instruct on construction design and management regulations; • negotiate dilapidations; • carry out feasibility studies; • advise on the health and safety aspects of buildings; • advise on boundary and ‘right to light’ disputes and party wall procedures; • prepare insurance assessments and claims.

Research Skills

• Must have finely honed research skills alongside ability to research and simplify complex situations quickly

• Must have the ability to effectively delegate research requirements to others.

• Demonstrate a high level of initiative with the ability to think laterally and identify innovative solutions, applying technical knowledge and wider understanding

• Must be constantly looking at ways of securing new work and spotting opportunities, having the determination to see them through and make them a success.

Organisational and Time Management Skills

• Must have excellent organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines • Prioritisation will be a key skill.

Technical Knowledge

• Must have good technical knowledge and competence • Logical and practical mind; • Commercial awareness and the ability to ensure that you are adding maximum value

to clients' businesses

Good Communicator

• Must be able to effectively communicate with clients and others in a clear and practical manner. Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills are required.

ICT Competent

• Must have a high level of competence of Microsoft Word, Excel and a good working knowledge of other software applications with the ability to adapt to new programs.

Professional Approach

• Must be able to present an authoritative and well informed image. Presentation of a responsible image both in and outside the work environment is crucial. The “market place” must have confidence in the individual.

Trustworthy

• Must be entirely trustworthy to George F. White, our client base and other professionals maintaining discretion and confidentiality at all times. Transparency and honesty are prerequisites.

Team player

• Must be able to effectively operate as part of a larger team, freely exchanging information and ideas.

Travel

• Must have a full driving licence, car and willingness to travel on behalf of the firm.
