The Key to Being in-Demand Your Entire Career: Be a 'Producer'
rom January 2010 to February 2013,the average unemployment rate was
8.8 percent, a stark contrast to theaverage of 5.3 percent from January2003 to December 2006. Though theunemployment rate - currently at itslowest point since 2009 - has begun toimprove, it is a slow recovery; the per-centage of unemployed Americans outof work for more than one year has sky-rocketed from 10 percent in 2007 tomore than 30 percent today, accordingto The Pew Charitable Trusts.
Despite the competitive employmentoutlook, certain individuals seem toremain employed no matter how dismalthe job climate. These professionalsare the first to receive offers when com-panies are in acquisition mode and arerarely laid off during lean times. Theirseemingly "charmed" reality is farremoved from the struggles experi-enced by the vast majority of theirpeers, and inevitably begs the ques-tion: What is the secret to their suc-cess? The answer is simple - they pos-sess the skil ls that keep them indemand.
Career expert Bill van Steenis, fre-quent speaker at colleges and universi-ties across the country and author of"In-Demand: How to Get Hired,Develop a Career and Always beSuccessful," offers a three-part formulafor staying in-demand:
1. Solve a problem. Every successfulcareer begins with the critical under-standing of why people are hired in thefirst place: to solve a problem that a
company or organization doesn't havethe resources to solve from within. It isimportant to remember that filling anopen position is about what's best forthe company, not you. "If you aren'tachieving results, they'll find someonewho will," says van Steenis.
2. Be competent. Possessing compe-tence in your field may sound obvious,but according to van Steenis, it's imper-ative for individuals to stay current andremain relevant. "Employers don't hireyou for your ability to theorize. Theyhire you because they know you'recapable of doing what they need you todo," says van Steenis. This is especial-ly critical for those either pursuing orexpecting to pursue a college degree.
When selecting a university, it isimportant to consider schools that canprovide hands-on learning and experi-ences from professors working in fields
related to the courses they teach.Ensuring you will be able to demon-strate competence upon graduation isvital during your job search.
