Punctuation Perfection in Prep C

This week during Modelled and Guided Reading lessons, PrepC have been working very hard to ensure they follow thepunctuation marks in texts they are reading. Before we readeach page, we have been pointing to full stops, commas, question marks, exclamation marks and talking marks. Whenwe read the words, we have been making sure we take a smallbreath at full stops and pause our reading at commas. We havediscussed why it is actually easier to read and comprehendtexts when we follow the punctuation marks written by theauthor.

For a bit of fun during Guided Reading Groups, each child wasgiven a sticker every single time they followed a punctuationmark. Most children ended up with over 30 stickers on their armafter their reading lesson.

Have a look at the sticker haul on our arms:

Year 1 HASS Excursion

In week seven, as part of our HASS unit, the year one classeswent on an excursion to the Jindalee Boat Ramp. The unitfocused on familiar places and students learnt to identify thenatural, managed and constructed features of those places. Wealso investigated and discussed how places and their featurescan be cared for. The morning started with a short walk fromthe school to the Boat Ramp. When we arrived, we split up intogroups and spent some time exploring the area. The students

Last Thursday, afternoon three teams from Jindalee StateSchool competed in an interschool Minecraft tournament atAshgrove State School. These 3 teams, consisting of 2students each, took their place among 12 other teamsrepresenting 5 schools.

The competition involved each team recreating the First Fleetand Settlement at Port Jackson using Minecraft, and givinga 3 minute presentation “in world” describing their build andjustifying choices linked to the historical knowledge aroundthis major event in Australian history, including the indigenousperspective.

Representatives from Microsoft, QUT and Amazon were thejudging panel for this interschool event. Our teams received twoGold awards and one Platinum award. Only two teams receiveda platinum award and one of our teams received this award withthe highest score for the tournament as well.

The overall school winner of the competition was Jindalee StateSchool.

The girls experienced technology at its best and its worst, demonstrating perseverance and problem solving to workaround the roadblocks and come up with a solution thatresulted in a win.

Student Impressions of the Interschool MinecraftTournament

I thought about how well I would do and if I would makeeveryone more proud.I felt scared and nervous that I wasn't going to do well.I saw all the other teams looking so confident.I wondered how I will go and how high we will score.

By Ava I

I thought that our school achieved a very high standard as theyawarded Jindalee State with two gold and one platinum

certificates.I felt impressed and amazed when they announced that ourschool won.I saw the judges concentrating on everything that the teamswere saying.I wondered how many points Ava and I achieved.

By Amaya M

I heard the silence of everyone but the presenters while theyguided us through their build.I heard the clapping of all the audience as the presentersfinished presentations.I heard the voices of the judges as they announced the scores.I heard the music from the speakers before anyone presented.I saw all of the students waiting patiently for their turn to speak.I saw the beautiful Minecraft builds on the projector’s screen.I saw that many of the students looked nervous and some veryexcited.I saw the judges at the end, pleased to announce scores.I felt very nervous when we couldn’t get our presentation toproject on the screen.I felt pleased when the judges announced that Winter and Ihad won and received platinum.I felt confident as Winter and I were presented to the audience.I felt excited before anyone had presented.I wondered why I was still nervous after the judges hadannounced Winter and my scores.I wondered how the Minecraft PE bug has not occurred to anyother schools.I wondered what the other students had built before theypresented.I wondered which school had won after all the students hadpresented.

By Callista K 4P

I heard people clapping, cheering and my little sister cryingfrom all the noise.I saw my mum cheering, Mrs Hume smiling, Mrs Pfrundersmiling, my friends sweating and then Mr Green talking.I felt very nervous, sweaty, scared and exited.I wondered if Jindalee won, if I went over time, if people didn’tlike or liked my presentation, if my school was proud of meand my friends.

By Kaitlyn M 4P

I heard the clapping of the people once we had finishedpresenting.I saw the other schools staring at us in amazement as weshowed our presentation.I felt the excitement flow through me when I was controllingthe presentation.I wondered if our school was going to win and if me andCallista would get a platinum award.

Year 6 Maths Extension Project

Bang! (We wanted to start it with a bang)

Throughout Term 3-4, a group of ten Year 6 students havebeen assigned the task of creating a mini city out of nets. Itwas called ‘Geometrocity’ as it combined Geometry with city

6

Page 7: Jindalee State School eNewsletter · students each, took their place among 12 other teams representing 5 schools. The competition involved each team recreating the First Fleet and

planning. Each team of two got allocated a part of the city, such as Tourist attraction or Industrial. First, we had to plan ourcity, and get our building permits, consisting of naming angles, shapes and other geometric features. We then had to drawour section of the city to scale, including specific criteria wewere given, such as having the correct type of buildings, lines, shapes and angles. Once that was completed, we createdour nets, decorated them appropriately and put them onto ourcity plan. Finally, we joined all the parts of the city together, along with the Year 5 components, creating “Geometrocity”comprising of ten city sections. We had tonnes of fun doing thisproject, and can’t wait to do more in the future.

Maths Team Challenge

Written by Isla M and Ellen B

Yet another Maths Team Challenge has come and passed, and a total of 58 teams from different schools (including manyprivate schools) were competing. Five Jindalee teams (3 Year6 teams and 2 Year 5 teams) took on the challenge andperformed their best. The events consisted of the TeamChallenge, the Relay Event, the Code Breaker and the IndividualChallenge, although the Code Breaker and the IndividualChallenge didn’t contribute to the final score. There were twocategories - the large schools and small to medium schools(our school was in the large school division). The questionswere the same for both categories, so the Overall Winner (thehighest scoring team out of ALL the 58 teams) received the BobChristopherson Shield.

One of our Year 6 teams, called the ‘Jindalee RadioactivePineapple Sandwiches’ (Isla M, Ellen B, Thomas B, James Band Jacob M), came First place in the large schools category, and were the Overall Winners of the day! This team won the

shield last year as well. Also, because the team received thehighest overall score, 102 points out of 107, (we only won by1 point!) each member of the team were kindly presented witha $50 Officeworks voucher. This team has now competed infive Maths Team Challenges since Year 4, and have won everytime.
