APRIL 1st navigator’s report on the Volvo ocean race—no Foolin’Matt Gregory, navigator of Delta Lloyd for the first three legs
Somewhere’s off Cape Town, Matt Gregory had enough of freeze-drieds to declare, “I’d give anything for a St. Francis cheeseburger.”
Now he’s back with adventure under his belt and tales about life on a VOR 70, hitting speeds in the 30s, dodging whales, and what
happens when something falls to the deck and (yikes) it’s a piece of the rigging
APRIL 8thWave adaptive. Modular. Vessel. Because it’s all one oceanUgo Conti, the man outside the box
His strange-looking speedster has been to New York and Washington, France and Italy and many a marine sanctuary since its
first sea trials here. That would be Proteus, a wave adaptive modular vessel, WAM-V. Dr. Ugo Conti had a unique vision of what a
research vessel should be (wam-v.com), so he built one, lightweight and low-draft, fuel-efficient, with flexible hulls to conform to
waves and exchangeable payload modules that deploy independently. Whoa!
APRIL 15ththe native Son Speaks: tales of the City by the Bay Carl Nolte, columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle
Are you, perhaps, grateful whenever a Carl Nolte byline appears in the Chron? The newspaper industry may be in a pickle, but
the city’s fourth-generation native son is going strong with his Native Son column, which often covers shipping, boats, and the
waterways. Carl’s voyage to Normandy aboard the liberty ship, Jeremiah O’Brien, produced some classic reads, and today he is
president of the ship’s preservation society. We told him, Carl, talk about anything you want.
APRIL 22ndthe View from the Front linesGary Jobson, All American, America’s Cup tactician, the voice of sailing
ESPN sailing business calls our Annapolis-based member to Southern California, which he says is close enough to merit a side-trip
to St. Francis. Perspective on the America’s Cup situation? He’s got that. A view of college sailing and one-design developments?
He’s got that. The latest at the grand prix level? In keeping with recent trends, we told him, Gary, talk about anything you want.
APRIL 29thBecause tahoe is Blue and historic, tooBill Kraus, Executive Director, Tahoe Maritime Museum
Loggers, fishermen, and of course the summertime getaway crowd have populated the waters of Lake Tahoe for a century and a
half, leaving a rich history celebrated today at the Tahoe Maritime Museum. At age 21 the museum is entering its second year in spiffy
new quarters, with collections of workboats, launches, hydroplanes, runabouts and the largest assemblage of outboard motors on
the West Coast. And Bill Kraus is the expert.
