Commodore’s Comments
S pring has sprung, I
think? The daylight
hours are getting longer
and hopefully soon we
will start to see boats
coming out from under-
neath their winter covers.
Unfortunately, our piers
did not come through the
winter unscathed. As a
result of the high-water
levels and the ice we
have some damage to the
brackets holding the fin-
ger piers to the auxiliary
pier. The damage is mi-
nor, but it cannot go
without repair. We will
be looking for several
work days over the next
couple of months to address the damage. Please watch your e-mail for
postings about work opportunities; we cannot get this done without
the help and teamwork of our membership.
The spring brat fry was a success, the fry crew not only cooked all the
food but they somehow managed to clean the garage. Great job boys!
We had a 50/50 raffle that generated a total pot just shy of $1,000.00
with the winner donating their portion back the club. Our members
are the best!!! Ship 50 had their annual chili cook off with Kevin Wer-
ner taking top honors this year.
This coming month we have the Commodore’s Ball coming up on
Saturday April 13. This year’s theme is a Crew Dinner with a cover
band as entertainment and another 50/50 raffle. Dinner will feature the
SYC tenderloin and were working to get whitefish. So, break out the
crew gear and head on down to the club and join the fun.
I look forward to seeing you all at the club this coming month.

All Hands on Deck This month, we are meeting Chris Aldag, the chair of your HVAC and Building Commit-
tees. Chris is married to Tanya and they have two sons. Jake is 13 and Zach is 16 years
old. Chris’ parents, Jerry and Pat Aldag, joined SYC in 1971, so Chris remembers grow-
ing up around the club and the derrick yard, playing in the basement, and hanging out
with current members as young kids. Chris and Tanya then joined SYC on their own in
2015 and Chris began to use his project manager and estimation skills to make many con-
tributions to SYC through the HVAC and Building Committees.
The main purpose of the Building Committee, Chris says, is to provide preventive
maintenance to all equipment. He enjoys making sure that everything in the building is in
working condition. He inspects the building at least once every two weeks to make sure
everything is working properly, from the kitchen hood to the boilers and roof top units.
His time spent “working” at the club averages about ten hours a month. His time spent
socializing at the club averages much, much more.
During Chris’ tenure as Building Chair, he has overseen several big projects around
the club. We’re sure you have noticed the recent replacement of the rooftop unit for heat-
ing and cooling the dining rooms and bar. That job was completed in December 2018. And then in January 2019, dur-
ing shutdown, the replacement of the flooring throughout the club was completed. Certain phases of that project were
coordinated by Chris from getting bids, to reviewing color samples, to making presentations to the SYC Board. Of
course, the greatest thing, Chris says, is seeing everyone take ownership in their club. If he ever asks for help, there is
always a good turnout of members to do the work required to improve the facilities. And if someone would like to learn
about the ins and outs of the Building Committee, Chris is always willing to teach. He’s always ready to accept more
help.
When asked about the rewards of serving on this committee, Chris says that the best reward is just being able to en-
joy the club with people who care. When asked about challenges, Chris has the attitude that with the right mind set,
“you can do anything.” And that’s all summed up in the name Chris and Tanya chose for their boat—Seas the Day.
