WYLSt. Francis Yacht ClubWednesday yachting luncheon 2010

by Kimball Livingston, WYL Chair

April 14th ELECtrifYing ExpEriEnCE: YaCht propuLsion sans DiEsELBill tomlinson of Electric Yacht

Quiet, simple, low maintenance, no fumes, no smells—electric power would be everybody’s choice for a sailing auxiliary, if it

had the range and thrust to satisfy everybody’s demands. We’re not there (yet), but electric propulsion is in the marketplace

now and working. Working for what sorts of boats? For what sorts of owners? developing what sort of shaft horsepower

relative to diesels? And what’s in the future? you have questions, we have answers.

April 7th rEsCuE Warriors: thE us Coast guarD, amEriCa’s forgottEn hEroEsDavid helvarg, author and conservationist rescue warrior

david helvarg spent two years living with the men and women of the Coast Guard, from new london, Connecticut—where

the Coast Guard Academy is the most selective of all the service academies—to the howling wastes of the Bering sea to the

searing heat of the persian Gulf and guard duty for iraqi oil terminals. he witnessed the dedication of a service for which the

unofficial motto goes, “you have to go out; you don’t have to come back.” (did we mention 125 distress calls a day?)

April 21st JamEs russELL, prEsiDEnt of thE nEW BEDforD WhaLing musEum the new Bedford and san francisco Whaling traditions

Whaling was once a major American industry, reaching to the farthest corners of the globe. new Bedford, Massachusetts,

was its epicenter until the 1880’s, when san Francisco took over, always with extremes: towering profits versus devastating

losses; color-blind hiring versus usurious exploitation. Whaling created the capital to found railroads, textile mills, and land

combines of global reach. in the usA, whaling is the stuff of museums, but in the world, it’s still part of the dialogue, baby.

April 28th mYstiCaL san franCisCofrederic Larson — You know his work

A Chronicle photographer since 1979, contributor to more than a dozen books (besides his own Mystical san Francisco),

Fred larson has captured many of the most memorable images of san Francisco in our time. he’s won a peck of awards—

twice California press photographer of the year—but it’s the images that we remember. sports, features, breaking news,

documentary, teaching, he’s done it all, and your chairman will attest that the man can shoot from the hip. (Bang!)
