JFB Candy Drive for the Troops

For the fourth year, J.F. Burns Elementary School will collect

Halloween candy to send to the troops overseas. The candy

drive starts Monday, November 3 and ends Tuesday,

November 11. Candy donations can be brought to the

school, located at 8471 Columbia Road in Landen.

Chocolate will be accepted, but no candy in the shape of

body parts or weapons can be donated.

The schools goal is to exceed the 927 pounds of candy (pictured below) that was donated last year

with the help of neighbors, local friends, businesses, and the rest of the Kings Local School District.

This year, we will be partnering withThe Yellow Ribbon Support Center located in Batavia, Ohio. The

Yellow Ribbon Support Center was founded by the parents of SSG Keith "Matt" Maupin after he was

captured by insurgents in Iraq on April 9, 2004. The Yellow Ribbon Support Center sends care

packages to deployed troops to bring them a little comfort from home.

We are also accepting monetary donations to

help cover the cost of shipping the care

packages. You may send a check in made

payable to "The Yellow Ribbon SupportFoundation" or make your donations via PayPal

through the Yellow Ribbon Support Center

website. All donations are tax deductible.

JFB PTO at Work for Our Kids!

We have had a number of in-school enrichment programs at school recently. This is why we

raise funds! All of these programs are paid for by YOUR participation in our PTO fundraisers.

Readers are Leaders; Midwest School Shows

(second grade)This interactive assembly was created to

reinforce elementary grade level reading and

English language arts skills. The program used

    entertainment, illusions, humor, and fun

    props to review reading comprehension,

phonics, and to help encourage students to

discover that reading can be fun. The show

also incorporated routines that help students

discover story building and creative writing.

Look, Count, Find Out; Cincinnati Zoo (Frischs Outreach)

    (kindergarten)

Inquiry isnt just for the big kids anymore! The children

met Rosie, a screaming hairy armadillo, and learned the

fun of discovering how the scientific process can help

    answer their questions!

Your Heart, Your Blood, Your Health; Cincinnati

    Museum Center (second grade)

What an amazing machine the heart is! Students

learned about how the heart is packaged, the way it

works, the way it sounds, to which system it

belongs, and what it pumps. They were able to get

up close and personal with capillaries, run a

little race, test their food pyramid knowledge, andshare some giant microbes!

Impact of Inventions; Cincinnati Museum Center (fourth grade)

What would life be like without light bulbs, traffic lights, or farmersalmanacs? Using a

timeline, experiments, hands-on activities, and role playing, students investigated the impact

of famous inventions created by Benjamin Banneker, Garrett Morgan, Eli Whitney, George

    Washington Carver, and Patricia Bath.

Bats; Cincinnati Museum Center (third grade)

The children walked like a bat, learned how to fly like a bat and even met a native Big Brown

Bat. They explored echolocation, how it works, and what it sounds like. Students learned

about these truly amazing yet misunderstood animals through a slide presentation, game,

    artifacts and more!
