IN ONE FELL SWOOP, CHINA

HAS TURNED FROM A MAJOR

IMPORTER OF PRIVATE

AIRCRAFT TO A MAJOR

INTERNATIONAL EXECUTIVE JET SELLER

t a recent business aviation conference in Singapore, an otherwise little known fact surfaced. For the past decade, aircraft manufacturers competed with each other in a headlong rush into what they thought was the holy grail of growth markets — China. This has come to a hard landing. Chinese aircraft owners — motivated by financial needs, fear of corruption allegations and their experience with their first,

and at times ill-advised aircraft ownership — are now motivated sellers. What’s more, most of their aircraft are younger than three years.

In one fell swoop, China has turned from a major importer of private aircraft to a major international executive jet seller. It is a development we have warned about for years. While China is and always will be a major market, it does not follow market rules as we know them in the West. Witness the recent successful stock market intervention by the Chinese government. In centrally controlled economies, entire industries can fall by the wayside with one single stroke of a pen.

The solution is as old as sensible commerce itself. Just as a seasoned wealth manager will always advise his clients to spread and mitigate risk, aircraft sellers need to learn to diversify their efforts in a variety of key markets. In Asia, these are Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and even the Philippines, a major private helicopter market.

Jetgala is strongly present in all of these markets, as we are in China. We know the players, the buyers, and the myriad of issues associated with every one of these countries. China is important and its sheer size is a siren call for sales and marketing people. But as all Communist administered economies, China disappoints in regular intervals. I call it the “China Two-Step” — two steps forward, one step back. Aircraft manufacturers will need to remember this, so as not to be caught on the wrong foot. Again.
