THE FITNESS EDGE AND HAWKS LOUNGE REFURBISHMENTPROJECT 2011

The Annual General Meeting of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club will be held in theHeritage Function Centre at the Club on Thursday 24th November at 7.30pm.

A further notice of the meetings will be sent to all members by the 31st October 2011.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Dear Member,

By the time that you receive this report you will possibly be aware that the campaign against the Federal Government’s proposed legislation of gambling has now been joined by the N.R.L., and you would have seen these advertisements on your T.V.

Since this was announced, there have been numerous articles in all forms of the media, mostly berating our Industry for speaking out against this legislation, and it should be again stressed that our

Industry shares concerns for those people who are addicted to gambling. All Clubs have for the last few years promoted voluntary commitment for those prepared to come forward, but like all forms of addiction, whether it be gambling, drugs, alcohol, smoking etc., the person concerned has to come forward if they seek help.

On behalf of the Board and management I wish to thank all those members who took the trouble to register their names on the petition that will be sent on to our local Federal Member, expressing the concerns that the above legislation may have not only our Club, but the entire Club Industry, and hopefully some sanity will prevail.

It has also been announced recently that the Government has set up an inquiry into the dangers of Internet and online gambling sites, and this problem has been a concern for everyone connected with the Gaming Industry, especially over the ease at which young people can access these sites with no form of supervision at all from responsible adults. It is hoped that some form of restriction can be placed on this apparent loophole in the existing Law.

Onto other Club news now and we are almost ready to call for Tenders for the upgrading of the Fitness Edge. The plans for the redesign of this facility are almost complete and this should see our Fitness Centre up there with the very best facilities available.

Most of our recent promotions have been well received. The marketing department is in the final stages of completing some surveys from members, seeking opinions on various areas within the Club, and the Board and management will study the results and implement any changes that are deemed necessary.

Finally, with the financial year now over, the task of auditing the accounts has begun. From early indications it does appear that the Club will show a healthy profit for the year. This profit has only been possible through support of all Members and also the management and our loyal and friendly staff, who keep our great Club “ticking”.

In conclusion, may I hope that all Members who have to pay the “taxman” get their maximum refund approved by the A.T.O.

Keith Aggett.President.

FOOTBALL REPORT

The Competition is now into the concluding rounds and since the last report the Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood Tigers have won five and lost four with a drawn game also.

The team has been decimated with injuries over the season and this has not helped our chances in the majority of matches, but the players have rallied together and still are given a chance to progress to the finals.

Apart from injuries, our playing strength has been depleted with the departure of several key players to other Clubs and it is to the credit of those players who have remained who have played their “hearts” out that the team is still in with a chance for the end of season big games.

Results from 17th April to 19th June are as follows;-

Versus North Sydney won 30 to 18

Versus Newtown lost 22 to 0

Versus Cronulla lost 26 to 0

Versus Canterbury Bankstown lost 17 to 16

Versus Manly won 40 to 12

Versus Auckland lost 40 to 18

Versus Windsor won 26 to 22

Versus Central Coast won 34 to 16

Versus Western Suburbs won 24 to 6

Versus North Sydney drew 18 all

Two players in Junior Moors and Jake Mullaney were rewarded with selection in the N.S.W. Residents team that played in the curtain raiser to the 3rd State of Origin in Brisbane recently, and our congratulations are extended to these players.

Hoping that the remaining matches will bring some success and hoping that our supporters keep showing their encouragement and continue to cheer on the team.

THE FITNESS EDGE AND HAWKS LOUNGE REFURBISHMENTPROJECT 2011

FOOTBALL REPORT

The Development Application for the 2011 project was lodged with Ryde Council on the 11th April and a copy of the original design for the proposed works is below. All our projects have been subject to continuous design development and this project is no exception. While the concept plan is reflected in the plan below, the design is still being fine tuned. The construction version will be displayed within the Club prior to construction commencing.

THE PROJECTThe major issues for the operation of the Fitness Edge are the lack of space for key facilities such as cardio equipment and the need to upgrade our change rooms. The Fitness Edge is now in its 14th year of operation and the proposed changes will ensure we are able to take the centre through another decade.

The key changes will be:1. The complete redesign of our change rooms To provide for a third change room. This will give us the flexibility to maintain the change rooms to a high standard without the restriction of the inability to access female change rooms during the day for maintenance issues. The third change room will also be used wherever possible as a family change facility for our learn to swim classes. These works will be staged so that we have one completely new female change room available prior to work in the existing change room areas (Refer staging plans on display at the Club).

2. A new Group Fitness RoomThis facility will be built in the existing Hawks Lounge and will be able to be completed with minimum disruption to Fitness Edge members. When finished it will allow us to:

A. Redesign the existing Group Fitness RoomThis will allow us to accommodate a new cycle room, to relocate weights equipment from the cardio room as well as provide additional weights equipment specifically targeted at entry level gym users…and

B. Refurbish the existing cardio room By removing the existing cycle room and relocating existing weights equipment which will allow more space for additional cardio equipment (treadmills, cycles etc.) and an enlarged stretch area. (Refer proposed new equipment layout on display at the Club).

3. New Reception area A redesigned and improved reception area which will also improve traffic flow in this area. Included in this part of the redesign is a new access passage to the new Group Fitness and cycle rooms, new change rooms and new weights room.

4. New Massage Facility – A new massage room with better facilities in a quieter environment to enable our massage providers Michael and Sarah from Magic Hands Massage to provide an even better service to members.

HAWKS LOUNGEA refurbished and modified Hawks Lounge will be constructed to ensure we have a suitable venue for those special sports events and an alternative lounge facility as required.

The Hawks Lounge will be closed for about 4 months while this work is proceeding but we are conscious of some regular and loyal supporters of this lounge area and we have ensured an alternative viewing area is available for all major sporting events during this time.

The works are expected to commence in early September (subject to Council approval) and will take up to 12 months to complete with stages being opened progressively during this time.

A more comprehensive draft staging plan is on display at the which will give members a better idea on how we hope to manage this project. The final design/construction plan will also be displayed at the Club prior to construction.

We will of course be working with the appointed builder to ensure there is minimum disruption to Fitness Edge members, but the complexity of the task within the existing building indicates we will have some difficult aspects to overcome.

We look forward to commencing this existing project.

“Learning to swim has many benefits for our children. It’s great for their health and well being, plus it enhances their self esteem, and teaches them a respect for water. While children are capable of being independently mobile in the water from a very young age, they must never be left unsupervised. No child is drown proof”. (Laurie Lawrence)

The Fitness Edge Swim School offers a safe, friendly and encouraging environment for people of all ages and abilities.

Our youngest students are 6 months of age and our most senior member is in their 70s. It’s never too late to learn the life skill

of swimming. All staff at The Fitness Edge are Austswim Qualified and all hold current CPR certification.

Babies & Preschool classes are held Monday to Friday between 11am and 2pm. There are limited Preschool positions on

Saturdays. All Instructors on these classes are qualified in Austswim Infant & Preschool Aquatics. Booking Days for children

between 6 months and 5 years are normally released at 10am on the 2nd Monday of each School Holidays with the exception

of the Christmas break when a date will be finalised later in the year.

School Age Learn to swim classes are by far the most popular. The classes cater for all school ages and abilities. The

focus for younger children is on safety and gaining confidence; from there we develop all swimming strokes. Our more serious

swimmers move onto Mini Squad and Squads. While the main focus in these levels in still correct technique, speed and racing

skills are also developed. Places in these classes are very limited and are subject to an assessment of new swimmers’ ability

and available classes.

Adult classes are held on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. We have 2 levels - Beginners and Intermediate.

Beginner classes are for members who are not confident to Swim with their faces in the water, and intermediate classes for

members who can swim but want to improve their technique.

Swim School office on 9808 7617

CAMERA CLUB Our club is blessed with many capable and gifted photographers, who are only too happy to share their knowledge and expertise. Two of these wonderful people are Ray and Nancy Moxom. Earlier this year they were invited by Ken Duncan to make presentations at a photographic weekend. Back at our club, Ray went on to present camera club members with advice on photographing waterfalls. Come and join us, there are too many wonderful opportunities to miss.At the recent Photographic Imaging Expo held at the Darling Harbour Conference Centre, the FCC – Federation of Camera Clubs (NSW) displayed the outstanding and winning entries from the Topshot 2011 competition. Two of our members, Murray Lowe and Scott Salter had their works on display at this Expo. You need to capture outstanding images in order to reach this level of photography. Congratulations Murray and Scott. An outstanding result, not just on an individual basis, but for the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club and each of its members.June the 19th saw a group of 28 members from our camera club board a boat to go whale watching. The whale watchers were not disappointed and camera gear was put to good use.. Some of these whale images can be viewed on the web site pbase, given. In the months ahead members will be sharing their images of Nature, images of their favourite photographic subject, and images where reflections play a significant role in the image presented. Share our friendship and find out how to improve your picture taking skills. Our website: www.pbase.com/relccc. New members - always welcome.Come and say hello. John Maynard

CHESS CLUB The preliminary rounds of our club championship have been completed – the first two from each of the three groups go into the Final in November. In Group A first was Lorenzo Escalante (8/9) with Rob Watson (7/9) second; Group B - Donato Mallari (9/9) first, and second was Joshua Christensen (8/9); Group C - Don Patterson (9/9) was first with a tie for second place between Bill Gletsos (6/9) and Argo Kuru (6/9) which required a play-off. Bill is leading two games to one with one game remaining. The handicap winners were Mato Mlinaric (6.5/9), Prabuddha Batuwatte (5/9), and James Hickey (5/9) for Groups A, B, and C respectively. Congratulations to all, especially Donato Mallari and Don Patterson for their perfect scores in the preliminary rounds. We have entered three teams in the NSW Chess Association Grade Matches. Progressive results are promising. Our Under 1800 is currently first with 14/20; Under 1600 is also leading its division with 14.5/20; and our Under 1400 team is performing solidly with 9.5/16. We hope we can maintain this standard. As always, new players of whatever standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. Prospective members are invited to visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com For more information, please contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970059), Greig Edwards (0416 248223) or myself - Dennis Hale (9484 1435).

EUCHRE CLUBA social evening and a delicious dinner in the Hawks Restaurant on May 22nd was enjoyed by our members and partners. A great night was had by all.The ‘’Willandra’’ room Wednesday evenings is the venue for the Euchre Club. A warm invitation is extended to experienced card players to come along and join us, commencing at 7.30 sharp. Sixteen games are played, first and second prizes are awarded for both men and ladies. At the conclusion of the evening a light supper is enjoyed with fellow members.Congratulations to our monthly winners: March:1st Rhonda Fekete runner up Margaret CampbellApril:1st Ray Stewart runner up Dorothy Coffill May winners: Sandra Baillie, Neville Coffill, John KingFor further information regarding membership please call (President) Don Baillie 9869 2857 Vice-President John Wicks 9874 2175. ‘’ACES UP’’ Pierina Dick Publicity Officer.

THE FISHING CLUBOur new charter boat, “The Putney Star” has been a success, with good seating and appointments. May’s outing was a bit testing with poor drift and tangles but still able to

catch 27kg of good fish. June’s outing was very successful going north and fishing off Long Reef for 47kg of clean fish. July’s weather saw good weather but poor current. Fishing north of Sydney, even with poor current we landed 36kg of fish. Sadly Nick Ceh, our organizer, was the only one on board not to land a fish, the first time ever. Our annual general meeting was held on Thursday 31st July 2011 at 8pm.The fishing club organizes monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of the month. Any interested club member should contact Nick Ceh on 9858 2412 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm.Upcoming Outings: Sunday 7th August Sunday 4th September Sunday 2nd October.

GOLF CLUB Blackheath was the 2nd round of the stableford trophy and the cool mountain air didn’t bother Tony Tedesco taking out A grade with 37 points. Runner-up on the day was Ulla Wood with 31 points. B grade went to Steve Jeffery on 37 points with Yuri Popov only just missing out with 36 points. Windsor was the second round of matchplay and a medal. Congratulations to the medal winners Robert Wood (A grade) and Henry Urbanski with a huge score of 45 points (B grade). Runner-Up prizes on the day went to Dave Whybro (A grade) and Dom Tedesco (B grade). The Eagles Nest went off again with John Nilan collecting 4 balls. Easter Sunday was spent at Richmond and winner on the day was John Nilan, 39 points on count back from Anthony Tedesco. Mother’s Day was spent at Muirfield battling out for a medal. Congratulations to Robert Wood (A grade) and Peter Lau (B grade). Runners-Up on the day were Tony Tedesco (A grade) and Valery P (B grade). The Eagles Nest went off again with Henry Urbanski collecting 1 ball. Windsor was the final round of the stableford trophy and congratulations to Tony Tedesco and Anthony Tedesco, winner and runner-up respectively. I think the Tedesco family may need a trailer at Presentation Night. Winners on the day were Tony Tedesco (A grade) and Anthony Tedesco (B grade). Runner-up prizes went to Steve Ferns (A grade) and Steve Jeffery (B grade). There was also an Eagle on the 3rd hole with the trusty Sand Wedge, congratulations Ulla Wood. Lynwood was home to the Team Shield and I think the course was the winner again with a lot of lost balls. Congratulations to our two team winners Steve McElhinney and Juan Quintas and Ulla Wood and Jayden Whybro. The semi-final of matchplay was at Blackheath with Robert Wood beating Steve Jeffery 2 up and Henry Urbanski beating Peter Lau 9/7. Good luck to our finalists. Medals on the day went to Henry Urbanski (A grade) and Daryl Alwood (B grade). Don’t forget to check the website for full results www.relgolfclub.com Good golfing til next time! Annika & Tiger!

SENIORS CLUB Forty of our members had a most enjoyable trip to Melbourne and Phillip Island for seven days in April with unexpected good weather. Our Mother’s Day lunch, held at Hawks on Second Avenue, was again a success and we thank all our members for their support. We are celebrating Yulefest in the Blue Mountains this year and perhaps we may even see snow! A group of us had a delightful day at Doyles, Watsons Bay, with the weather clear and bright but very, very windy and the seas choppy. As well as our monthly bus trips, twice yearly trips away, lunches and occasional visits to the theatre (this year was a visit to the Capitol Theatre to see Mary Poppins) we still enjoy our monthly walks around Sydney. Our monthly speakers continue to be very popular and cover a wide range of topics. We hold two meetings a month in the Function Rooms at the Club, on the first and third Thursday at 11am. A game of Solo is played every Thursday at 1.30pm. Our Annual subscription fee is $5. For more information please contact Marie Weston on 9638 7419.

SQUASH CLUBWe are nearing the completion of the Autumn Competition for 2011. The Squash Club had 2 teams entered this competition, Div 5 and Div 8, who have both made it through to the finals. The Div 5 team finished the comp in 2nd place on 248 points and the Division 8 team finished 3rd on 165 points. Well done to all and good luck for the finals. Let’s see if we can win a pennant this comp.On a social note, the Squash Club recently held a ‘reunion’ at the Ryde Eastwood

Leagues Club and a great time was enjoyed by all who attended. Many spoke of the great night they had and how they enjoyed catching up with people they hadn’t seen for many years – a truly great night. There were some familiar faces from the past who attended, Dick Sterndale-Smith, Geoff Henry, Mick Hoban, John Goldsmith, Ian Goldsmith, Rod McGregor and Peter Dimauro to name a few – great to see you all there!!! It has been 40 years since the Squash Club was formed (founded in 1971). Over 100 past and present players attended the evening, so there was much to catch up on and discuss. Congratulations must go to Ernie & Bev Speed for organising such a memorable event. It was yet another brilliant organising effort by them both. Well done and thanks!!Here are a couple of thoughts to ponder -1. ‘A friend is someone who is there for you when they’d rather be somewhere else.’ 2. ‘Only your real friends tell you when your face is dirty.’ If you are interested in joining please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. We play at the Northmead Sports Centre Windsor Rd, Northmead. Our ‘home night’ is Wednesday - 8pm start.

TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUBOur last trip held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend was a total washout due to torrential rain. However, the Umina Club extended a warm welcome and morning tea. After some free time to chat with the locals, play cards or use the club’s facilities, it was time for lunch. The restaurant provided a very good meal and made us content for the journey home. We have three trips remaining this year 1. Woonona 31st July 2. Avoca 11th September 3. Ettalong 13th November. Anyone interested in membership or information relating to our trips please contact Marie Crawley on 9684 1023 or Bob Freeland on 9644 4792 or mobile 0427 003 038. Looking forward to your company as usual.

TRAVEL CLUBSince our last news we are very sorry to report that our President sustained a nasty accident at Macquarie Centre. After hospital and rehab we are pleased to report that Yvonne is recuperating well and we hope to see her back with us soon. The trip along the Great Ocean Road was a success and very enjoyable. Our Christmas in July takes place on Tuesday 19th July at Eltham Lodge, Mt. Victoria. We have received a wonderful response to this outing. In August we will be having our ‘Winter Special’ lunch at Doyle’s, Watson Bay. For many years this is always a popular day out. With September hopefully bringing warmer weather, we intend taking a cruise for Palm Beach to Patonga for a fish and chip lunch, then on to Bobbin Head to reboard the coach for the return journey home. In October three days away is planned to Gloucester, Barrington Tops and surrounds. All meals and accommodation will be provided. More details to follow. For more information, and if you wish to join the club, contact our secretary, Margaret Dollar on 9898 3332.
