The Christmas season officially begins at our house the weekend after Thanksgiving. The Christmas tree is decorated to the sounds of our favorite Christmas carols and songs playing in the background. Every year the tree looks more spectacular when it is completely decorated and the lights are plugged in. This year new lights were even added to the mix to enhance the tree’s beauty. I love this time of year. Lights are everywhere! Homes, churches, businesses and small and large trees can be seen decorated with beautiful colorful lights. I don’t like it when this season ends and the lights are shutoff and taken down and stored away for another year. It seems as though darkness returns where there was light for just a short time. The image of light dispelling darkness should be central to our understanding of the incarnation and its meaning. We read in Luke 2 that shortly after his birth when Jesus was presented at the temple, the aged Simeon recognized this child as “A Light for revelation to the Gentiles, of your people Israel.” Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came to provide light for a dark world. However, as John explained, “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came into His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.” It’s hard to believe that most people did not recognize Jesus being as whom he is, The Light of the World. As a celebration of light, Christmas points to the glory of God in the revelation of the Son in Bethlehem’s humble manger. We rightly point to the Savior’s birth as the central event of human history, the dividing line between the age of darkness and the age of light. To me this is reason enough to celebrate Christmas. I sincerely hope that your response to this gift of light will be one of celebration, thanksgiving and rejoicing. Light is central, not only to Christmas, but to Christianity. Jesus said: “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but have the Light of life.” (John 8:12) My prayer this Christmas season is that if you are living in darkness, you will experience the shining Light of life. Your special Year-End gift to MCBI will help us continue proclaiming, not only at Christmas, but all year long, the message that Jesus is The Light of the World. We missed reaching our Share goal by $50,000 and our giving over the last couple of months has been down, so your partnership as we close out 2012 will be greatly appreciated.

We read in Luke 2 that shortly after his birth when Jesus was presented at the temple, the aged Simeon recognized this child as “A Light for revelation to the Gentiles, of your people Israel.”

Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came to provide light for a dark world.

Jesus, a TheographyInterview with Frank Viola, coauthor of Jesus, a Theography,

by Phil Kvamme, Program Director of 91.5 and 102.7 The Word

Phil Kvamme Our year end theme for 91.5 & 102.7 The Word is Jesus, Light of the World and our book of the month for November is Jesus, a Theography by Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola from Thomas Nelson. Frank Viola, welcome, please tell us first, what is a theography and how is it different from a biography?

Frank Viola Well, a biography is a history of someone’s life based upon various sources, typically people who knew them…a theography is a theological biography that is rooted in the fact that this person, Jesus, is a divine individual, not just a human individual. The sources we’re using are the scriptures themselves, the Old and the New Testaments.

Phil Kvamme I have the kids in my Sunday School repeat back to me that the Old Testament is about Jesus coming and the New Testament says Jesus is here. Is that where you are coming from? The focus of every one of the 66 books in the Bible – is Jesus.

Frank ViolaYes, and it’s not just the prophecies that we use as proof texts in the Old Testament that Jesus had been foretold, it is the whole Bible! The whole Old Testament, including the stories, all of them prefigure and foreshadow Jesus, from the minor details including His life, the choosing of the disciples, His temptation in the wilderness and His entire ministry. It’s really a matter of looking at the whole Bible in the light of Christ. That’s what we seek to do in this book. We seek to take a revolutionary look at the scripture and show that it’s all about Him. And Jesus Himself said this numerous times in the New Testament. He said all scripture points to Me, and in another place He opened up the scriptures and revealed Himself to His disciples from Moses (the first 5 books of the Old Testament) and the prophets (those are all the prophetic books including the Kings and Chronicles) and the Psalms (which would include the writings like Proverbs and Song of Solomon). There’s your entire Old Testament. Jesus unveiled Himself out of all of that. So what we’ve done is take the way the first century New Testament authors interpreted the Old Testament and we apply it to the entire scripture and it really is a mind blower to see Jesus Christ, the eternal Son, on just about every page of the Old Testament.

Phil KvammeThis book would be a great way to celebrate Christmas this year.

Frank ViolaOf course Christmas is all about this person Jesus and His birth. We do take a lot of time to talk about the birth and get into details that are often overlooked. For example: the significance of the kings and why did they bring 3 gifts, what is the meaning of the gold, frankincense and myrrh and how did that tie into the Old Testament? It’s really wonderful to see the richness of why God did those things. He was born into wood and He died in wood. He was given myrrh at his birth and at his death. What does it all mean? So we open this all up and compare scripture to scripture. Christmas is a time when we celebrate and honor Jesus and this whole book is wall to wall, cover to cover a revelation, an unveiling, of Jesus Christ from Genesis to the maps. It all points in the same direction to this wonderful person Jesus.

Phil KvammeFrank you’ve got a blog that’s very popular in Christian circles, www.FrankViola.org is the website.

Frank ViolaReaders are Christians from many denominations, pastors, teachers etc. and we cover all sorts of interesting things that relate to knowing the Lord better, knowing the Scripture better, finding Christ in the Bible, interviews with other authors, yeah it’s been a lot of fun doing that.

Frank Viola is a popular conference speaker and the best selling author of numerous books on the deeper Christian life, including Epic Jesus, Revise Us Again, From Eternity to Here, and Jesus Manifesto (also coauthored with Leonard Sweet). Leonard Sweet is professor of evangelism at Drew University, a pioneer in online learning. He has authored numerous articles, sermons and close to fifty books. The entire interview with Frank Viola will be broadcast on the Rise and Shine program in December, and will be posed on our website, www.theword.mn.

Upcoming Pulse Events

This time of year always seems to bring a lot of extra “stuff” to our plates. We are preparing for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year celebrations. The Pulse Staff and I are looking ahead to the next year and seeking God’s guidance through prayer on how we can reach more people for His Kingdom and then asking that He answer those prayers… and this year, 2012, BOY DID HE EVER!

Once again I get to say how God is so good! After years of praying, researching and countless hours of leg work, this year became a year of answered prayers not just in my own personal life, but in the life of 100.1 WZFJ FM “The Pulse”. God heard our prayers and answered them way beyond ALL expectations.

I’m pretty sure most of you reading this wouldn’t know what goes into acquiring a radio station, I know I didn’t and reflecting back I wonder if I do now or not! What I do know is we asked and He answered. From purchase negotiations, the FCC licensing process, public comments and final FCC approval, God took care of it all! I won’t get into all of the nitty gritty details of what happened or how it happened, just that it did… and now “The Pulse” is proud to call 104.3 FM home! And instead of 6,000 watts of power, He blessed us with 50,000 watts

and the potential to reach almost an additional 100,000 listeners and all in our 10th Anniversary year, what a birthday gift!

After an incredible year of seeing first hand how God answers prayers you will undoubtedly be able to relate to what I say and that is, it’s all in Gods time! Pray for that door to open. When it does, walk through it. If it closes, pray and look for another door to open. No matter how many doors open and close, no matter how many days, months or even years you continue to pray and the doors continue to open and close… if it is God’s will, your prayers will be answered, but in His time. It’s kind of like in the movie “Facing the Giants” when the coach doesn’t realize that through all of the trials, troubles and everything else he goes through, God is preparing him for rain. He toils and does everything that He believes God is directing him to do. He is sowing the seeds and when God blesses the coach with rain, the fruits are clearly seen. In other words, God is using those doors that open and close to help teach and prepare us for when He is confident we are fully prepared to receive His blessing and our prayers answered.

Thank you God for answered prayers!

“I just want to encourage you guys to keep doing what you’re doing! I was listening to another Christian station (out of the area) and have been shocked by the lack of biblical depth and Scripture foundation. The Pulse stands in such stark contrast to it.
