The gardens are distributed over an acre and a half of washed-out rice field and represent a progressive extension of my research efforts with the Cajun Prairie Restoration Project. Ten gardens depict the results of prairie and marsh restoration and pond development. The gardens are transplanted/seeded with native plants from less than 50 miles in distance from the gardens. As such, the gardens clearly depict natural landscaping models for lawns and fields in southwestern Louisiana. More than 250 native prairie species, 200 varieties of Louisiana Iris, and 100 naturalized plant species are grown in habitats which provide protection for wildlife, including birds, butterflies, pollinators, predators, and other beneficial insects. Representing a paradigm shift for the community landscaping, the gardens also demonstrate aspects of a paradigm shift toward sustainable landscaping, sustainable agriculture and erosion control. As an outdoor classroom, the gardens provide a living "publication" demonstrating the varied stages of change as the various southwestern Louisiana habitats recover. Awards received:
