Dear Parents, There is so much great learning happening in the classrooms right now and it’s wonderful to see the great enthusiasm of both children and staff. PREPS IN PYJAMAS – PRAYER FOCUS

Jesus our Shepherd

You call us away from danger, carry us when we are weak, and watch over us always, You care for us.

You are our good shepherd

It was lovely to have our Preps together on Tuesday night for the annual Preps In Pyjamas evening. It was an evening where some insights were shared about prayer, and where the children were able to listen to the Parable of the Lost Sheep, presented by the facilitator on the night, Marisa Capuano, through an approach called ‘Godly Play’. My thanks to the Prep teachers Belinda Iudiciani and Joanne Furness and to Donna Monteleone for coordinating the evening.

FATHER’S DAY CELEBRATION We were obviously concerned with the weather all day last Friday, but thankfully it improved and the rain held off, to well after the celebration was completed. After a VERY busy and hectic start to the afternoon, the activities settled down and children and their dads were able to engage in a number of activities ranging from table tennis to designing paper planes. Dads also played “Snakes and Ladders’ and ‘Tic Tac Toe’ as well as enjoying Basketball Shooting and Handball Competitions.

The highlight of the afternoon were the amazing sausages cooked by our teachers, and the Father’s versus Children Soccer game. (A surprise visit from one of my sons was also a highlight for me!).

My thanks to all the school staff who supported the event: Mr Edwards, Mr Catalano, Mr Hartnett, Ms Monteleone, Ms Torney, Mrs Bakas, Ms Lontos, Mr Koulaxizellis, Ms Mastroianni and Mr Ling. The afternoon would certainly not have been possible without their contributions.

My thanks to all the mums that also helped out throughout the day to ensure it was a great afternoon. I’d like to thank Silvana C. (Alessio 4B, Mariella 3F), Siobhan B. (Caden 2C), Frances M. (Alessia 3G, Luca Prep F), Maria P. (Gianna 5H, Anthony 3F), Vicky S. (Jacob 5H, Daniel 3F, Isabella 1Z), Jo A. (Nikolas 6M, James 4P), Jackie D. (Orlando 5H, Bonita 3F), Anna V. (Oscar 5H, Ebony 1B), Chessy B. (Antonio 2C, Alex PI)

A Father’s Day Celebration Photo Page is included in this Newsletter.

HOLY NAME ART SHOW – NEXT WEDNESDAY, 12th SEPTEMBER, 3.30pm to 7.30pm WOW!! That’s all I can say regarding the artwork I’ve seen so far. The excitement is certainly building up as we prepare for next week’s Art Show. As you know, apart from individual artwork that will be on display, each class has also produced an art piece that each child in the class has contributed to. These artworks are extraordinary and are currently on display in the school office and I welcome you to pop into the office and have a look. These magnificent artworks, which would look fantastic in any home or office space, will be auctioned off in a ‘silent bid’ next Wednesday.

AQUABUBBLER INSTALLED

As mentioned last week, our aquaBubbler has been installed and it’s wonderful to see many of the children already making great use of it.

My thanks again to Yarra Valley and their ‘Choose Tap’ campaign – an initiative which promotes the environmental and health benefits of drinking tap water.

The aquaBUBBLER is both a drinking fountain and a water-bottle refill station and is designed for children and encourages good health and hydration habits.

BUNNINGS COMMUNITY SUPPORT – HOLY NAME GARDENING CLUB

As you may know, we have been successful in obtaining amazing support from Bunnings as part of their Community Support Programme. My thanks to one of our mums, Marla P. (Cameron 5C, Vienna 1Z) for all her work in garnering the support of Bunnings and acting as the liaison between school and Bunnings. Stephanie, from Bunnings, will be working with the school over the next few weeks in planting vegetables in a number of garden plots around the school. My thanks to Mr Edwards and his ‘Garden Crew’ for all of their work in preparing all things ‘GARDENING’. These children have been amazing

in their efforts, potting seedlings, preparing plants for the school Fete and general garden maintenance! Fantastic work!! We received 4 cubic metres of soil yesterday, which will be used in the old bocce court which will be converted into a garden bed. The Garden Crew are clearly extending their learning opportunities; it provides a great way for our students to learn about gardening and gain hands-on experience growing their own food, and tasting the fruits (and vegetables!) of their labour. DISTRICT ATHLETICS CARNIVAL – TUESDAY, 11th SEPTEMBER We have a large Athletics team that will be taking part in next week’s Preston District Athletics Carnival at the Coburg Athletics Track (Outlook Road, North Coburg) next Tuesday. My thanks to all the children who tried out, and on behalf of our community, we congratulate them on making the Team and we wish them an enjoyable and successful day. Nick Marinelli Principal

PREPS IN PYJAMAS

On Tuesday evening we had our Preps in Pyjamas prayer evening.

It was fantastic to see so many of our Prep families

make the effort to come along and join us in a night

celebrating our faith journeys and I thank them sincerely

for making the time to do so.

Many thanks also go to Belinda Iudiciani, Joanne Furness

and Marisa Capuano for their preparation

in leading the evening.

Marisa shared with the students the

story of the Good Shepherd,

retelling the story through Godly Play,

it was wonderful to see how excited

and keen the Prep students were and

how engaged they were in participating

in this prayerful reflection.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES

Holy Name Primary School is an eSmart

School. This week is National eSmart Week. National eSmart Week is a week

where communities come together to encourage everyone to be smart, safe

and responsible when using digital

technology. It creates awareness, solutions and ideas for community education on issues of cyber safety, bullying and

wellbeing online, and offline.

Last Monday, three members from the eSmart team attended a Professional

Development event run by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

We were presented with important information to help keep children safe from violence,

especially related to technology. One of the guest presenters was Greg Gebhart from the Office of the eSafety Commissioner. Greg is the Senior Trainer for the Office of the

eSafety Commissioner and one of Australia’s leading presenters. Greg has provided presentations to more than 500,000 participants at state, national and international

events. He also presented at Holy Name in 2015.

We were provided with useful up to date information, strategies and resources to

support our school and the safety of our students.

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DRILLS Last week, the staff participated in Emergency Management Training.

Today, the whole school participated in a drill. The purpose of conducting an emergency evacuation training drill is to assist all staff and students to know their roles and

responsibilities in an emergency situation in accordance with the workplace plans and procedures, and to test the school response to an emergency.

MATHS OLYMPIAD

Next Wednesday is our fifth and last Maths Olympiad. The students have enjoyed the challenge to test their strategies and problem solving skills.

Our focus over the last few weeks have been on Cryptarithms. Hopefully, if one of these questions comes up again, we are prepared and ready for the challenge.

Cryptarithms

Cryptarithms are a type of mathematical puzzle in which the digits are replaced by symbols (typically letters of the alphabet).

For example

Each letter represents a unique digit. Numbers must not start with a zero.

The solution is unique (unless otherwise stated).

CAN YOU SOLVE THE PROBLEM BELOW?

FAREWELL TO NICK – REMINDER TO ALL FAMILIES

Please mark in your diaries on Friday, 21st September there will be a special assembly to farewell and thank Nick Marinelli at 9:30am in the Hall. This will be an opportunity

for the school to acknowledge and thank him for his hard work over the past three terms.

All parents are welcome to this assembly and to the morning tea, organised by the P&F, which follows at 10am in the Interactive Learning Centre (ILC).

ASSEMBLY

A reminder that School Assembly begins at 2:45pm every Monday.

Next week we will be having our Grade 6’s present at the School Assembly.

TABLE TENNIS NIGHT

Thanks a bunch to all the dads that came along to our Ten Pin Bowling Night a few

weeks ago. I’m glad to see we didn’t get too competitive, although can I just say what a shark Nick is!

There was one award that didn’t get announced on the night, and that relates to

‘Tightest T-Shirt’ and that goes to Ange. Lucky for him (and us) he wears it well and despite using the kids bowling aid, he still looked quite menacing!!!!

Well, Nick’s farewell tour continues, and his final gift to the M.A.D. group will be when

he gives us a ‘lesson’ at table tennis.

Can you please put a placeholder in the diary for 7pm, Wednesday 19th September.

The tables will be set up in the School Hall, and if we kick in $10 each, we will get some pizzas and refreshments.

More details to come.

BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE

We are super excited about the warmer weather. It means more outdoor play.

Yesterday, Helen, Maxi and William were playing soccer outside. We also played line

tiggy.

We have also been learning about Aboriginal culture, painting boomerangs and

throwing them in the basketball court.

OLD KEYS NEEDED

On Fete day, we're hoping to have a LOCKED Wheel barrow on display, with a delicious

assortment of donated wine, beer and spirits. Participants will then be given the chance to purchase a key to open the barrow and win the contents.

Do you have any old keys you no longer use and are happy to donate them to the

‘Wheel Barrow Game’ at the Fete?

If you do, please put them in an envelope labelled FETE KEY/S and ask your child to give them to Leanne. Thank you in anticipation.

Starting next term, we will be asking the whole school to make donations that will support our Fete. There will be a ‘reward’ for the most generous classes. We’re giving
