What is a Native Plant?
Native plants have evolved over
thousands of years to be adapted
to local soil and climate conditions
and to the other plants and animals
around them.
Native plants have natural defenses
to local diseases and pests.
Why go native?
Save Time and Money
Reduce the cost of caring for your plants – natives are hardy!
Reduce or eliminate use of water, fertilizer, and pesticides.
Bring in the Birds and Butterflies!
Native wildlife evolved with native plants and depend on them for food, shelter, and nesting sites.
Keep Our Water Clean
• Native plant roots excel at providing channels and spaces for water to move down into the soil.
• Natives need little to no fertilizer or pesticide applications – so that means less on the ground that stormwater can carry into our rivers and streams.
