As a young girl, Gerda spend many school vacations with her mother,

who worked in a castle. You might think that a school girl would

be bored in a place like that with the company of only dusty, old

things but that wasn't the case for Gerda. She loved every single day

of it. She would wander around for hours imagining the days back

when and the rise and fall of days gone by. To her it was amazing.

So her interest in beautiful, old antiques goes all the way back to her

childhood and her passion has never faded, rather the reverse. Gerda

is still very passionate about beautiful, old items, preferable of the

somewhat grandiose variety – lavish yet simple. Pretty, old dress

forms, beautiful mirrors and wonderful candlesticks are essential to

the decor at Gerda's house. She's always coming up with new ideas

so for the most part she's always working on a couple of projects.

Designing and decorating has become a lifestyle. Gerda mostly

looks for original items, and in her decorating she tries to get back

to the warm and cozy atmosphere that she recalls from the castle.

Ideas: Pull the couch out from the wall to make room for a piece of

furniture behind it. This opens up more options for making displays

and creates a cozier space than if all the furniture is placed along the

wall. Here Gerda has put together a beautiful and elegant still life

with a large, old, French church candlestick, a pair of old, patinated,

French mirrors flanked by the adorable porcelain lady-in-waiting

with a skirt made from pure silk and lovely, little silk flowers. You

can always find room for old dress forms. Gerda decorates them

with various antique flowers wreaths, corsets and angel wings,

which adds a bit of life and humor to the decor.

Gerda most often decorates with tone-on-tone colors. She loves the

harmony that's achieved when the colors go together really well

and don't stick out from one another. Gerda usually works with the

more neutral colors such as brown, beige and cream.

Ideas: In several places around the house Gerda has combined the somewhat

lavish and palatial furniture with pieces of rustic and very simple

peasant furniture. This creates a very personal style. She often tries

to do the same with her vintage accessories. Lavish candle holders

create a beautiful interplay with a lovely, little child's portrait placed

for display on a small farmhouse stool. Old paintings and portraits

bring a slightly palatial atmosphere into the decor but the frames are

frequently a bit over the top. You'll achieve a more contemporary

simplicity by removing the frames.

The beautiful decoration on the throw pillow is a very special

detail. It's also one of the things that makes authentic, old items

more interesting than new things. Newer items rarely have the same

wealth of details. The beautiful, old antiques bear evidence of a time

with room for more embellishment. You should always keep an eye

out for these exquisite, old textiles as they can really enhance your

decor.

As a wall decoration, several different pairs of vintage angel wings

are hung side by side. Their colors and shapes are quite rare, almost

like butterfly wings. If you feel up to it, you could try to make your

own replicas out of thick wire, nylon stockings and lace.
