JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message Last week Loisia and I had the privilege of going to the Eastern Region Principal's Conference. With around 500 educational leaders at the conference we were involved in many constructive discussions and presentations. Minister Dixon and department representatives affirmed that we are moving to very much autonomous times where schools are able to make decisions relevant for their immediate community. International speakers like Yong Zhao and Fernando Revizi shared their insights into how technology can enhance the learning opportunities in these global times. Carol Ann Tomlinson shared her research into how school leaders can support teachers in developing differentiated programs that provide relevant learning opportunities for all students. A key part of Carol's presentation that resonated with me is that everyone has the right to experience success and be provided with learning opportunities at their level. Carol spoke about the strategies deployed in two US schools that she worked with that were able to make significant improvements in the way that they catered for all of their students. Yet again, Carol's research affirmed the range of abilities in every classroom across the world and that this happens regardless of the class structure. To compliment this information, Vic Zbar shared a variety of research from John Hattie that highlights the biggest impact on student learning is in fact the teacher and no matter what structures and snazzy features you have access to, it boils down to how capable the teacher is in utilizing these resources to support student learning. Loisia and I enjoyed hearing about what other schools are implementing and in particular relished the opportunity to affirm the work of our school and staff in differentiating and providing relevant, engaging and meaningful opportunities for students. Over the coming weeks we will continue to focus on improving teaching and learning practices through teaching team “learning walks” where I compliment the teachers for their open dialogue when analysing numeracy lessons in the last fortnight. PARENTAL SUPPORT At Blackburn Lake Primary we are truly privileged to have the tremendous support of our parents and community. This support improves our school and the children’s daily experiences through what I call “valuing, volunteering and adding value”. We appreciate the high level of value and trust that our parents place in our teachers to apply their professionalism, their care and their knowledge to improve student social, emotional and academic outcomes each and every day. At BLPS we have many volunteers around our school - parents who give their time to coordinate school services – such as the Canteen, Uniform Shop, and School Banking – giving the children of the school choice (and I once again thank Danielle Killian, who finishes next Monday for her amazing contributions, also reminding everyone that another volunteer – or group of volunteers - is sought in order to continue offering Canteen this year); governance positions (such as School Council and Subcommittees); assistance in the

classroom or across the school (such as ‘Seussical’ and this Saturday’s Working Bee – hint, hint – see below). Many parents also add value to the school through financial support of the school – ensuring items not covered by the Department are paid and programs are well supported (with thanks to all families who have committed to selling Chocolates on behalf of the school in the Parents Association’s current fundraiser). We are getting closer to our goal of installing a synthetic mini-oval next to the DJC. As well as being fortunate that our Parents Association work hard to fundraise for the betterment of our school and resources, this group also strives to add value to the children’s experience of school. An example of this is Milo Mornings – with a reminder for children to bring $1 to school tomorrow – an opportunity to beat the August chill and also add warmth to primary school life. PARENT OPINION SURVEY (return to BLPS by THURSDAY 9 AUGUST (TODAY) Thank you to the parents who have recently returned their Parent Opinion Survey on ‘How Our School Is Going’. These surveys were sent home to families randomly selected by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) computer system last week and should now have been returned to school. Once collated these are returned to DEECD who analyse our parents’ perception of things that might be going well and things where we can still improve. These results will be communicated back to the community next term, following discussion at School Council. If you were sent one of these surveys and have not yet had a chance to complete this, could you please return this tomorrow should you wish to have this input. As always, I remind parents that my door is open as feedback is important to us in our endeavour to continually improve our great school. WOOLWORTHS AND COLES PROMOTIONS Thank you to the families who have supported the school, collecting vouchers and stickers from both the Woolies ‘Earn & Learn’ and Coles ‘Sports for Schools’ initiatives - programs that have the potential to provide valuable resources for schools like ours. Families can return by vouchers by the 14th August (Coles) and completed sticker cards 7th September (Woolies) into the collection boxes in the Office foyer and your support will be greatly appreciated. I hope to see you at our whole School Assembly tomorrow to acknowledge our ‘Students of the Week’ (again requesting families not to enter the DJC before 3:00 as the children will be using the time prior to privately rehearse the opening whole school Suessical song).

WHOLE SCHOOL ‘WORKING BEE’ - SATURDAY 11 AUGUST Please bring with you – Forks, Spades, small Trowel, Wheelbarrows & Gloves.

This Saturday morning is our Term Three ‘WORKING BEE’ where we will plant some native tube stock and tidy up our front garden beds. Work has already taken place to remove dead and self-seeded plants to increase plant diversity in this area, where we hope to plant over one hundred indigenous plants. The other project for the morning is the establishment of a vegie patch – as requested from our Junior School Councillors. After this we will hold a raffle draw at the morning barbecue for some passes for Hoyts

Forest Hill cinema tickets. See you there! AEU INDUSTRIAL ACTION - WEDNESDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER Schools have been advised that the next round of industrial action will take place on Wednesday 5th September. A resolution has not been reached between the state government and the AEU and so this day will see many teachers participating in this action, meaning most schools will be affected to some degree. As

was the case last term, teachers will advise me of their intentions regarding this action soon. As we did previously, parents will be advised by letter of any grades affected on the day as early as possible, to allow time to make alternative arrangements as required. I hope to see you at our whole School Assembly tomorrow @ 3:00pm to acknowledge our ‘Students of the Week’ (but we will ask families not to enter the DJC before this time as the children will be using the time prior

to privately rehearse the opening whole school Suessical songs). Regards, Jason Walker – Principal [email protected]

LOISIA’S LETTER

It was encouraging to hear the research of Carol Ann Tomlinson at last week’s EMR Conference as it affirmed the journey our school is taking in using her research to support our teaching and learning practices at

Blackburn Lake. Whilst teachers recognise that every child is unique, the process of catering for every child by providing the right level of instruction, meeting the needs of the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learner, offering curriculum diversity and providing instruction that builds on a child’s personal interest is challenging. Using Carol Ann’s model of differentiation, our teachers have continued to explore ways to use multiple options for students, enabling all children access to the same concept, but with varying degrees of complexity. We continue to be

MAGICAL MUSIC MATTERS JAMES H MUSIC CAPTAIN’S QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

Did you know? The ‘Theremin’ is an instrument played without being touched! It’s played by moving your hands slowly in small sudden movements to change the note and volume. It was invented in 1919 by Russian Leon Theremin.

One more Canteen day to go… The last Canteen day will be Monday 13 August. We’d like to pass on our thanks to Danielle for all her hard work in being our canteen coordinator for the last 4 years. Through her efforts at the Canteen alone, the PA has raised approximately $40,000 for the school. For the Canteen to continue operating, we need a new coordinator, or a Canteen Coordinator’s Group, to come forward from our school community.

CANTEEN ROSTER - MONDAY 13 AUGUST - FINAL TEAM!

Lara J Carolyn B-M Helen V Sally J Brendan DeM

This is the last Canteen until we find someone else to coordinate it. Make the most of it kids, muffins and milkshakes and all the usual stuff for lunch. It could be your last chance for a while! I would like to say a special thank you to all of the children and parents who wrote me some lovely notes, it was a very nice surprise. I would also like to thank all of the fantastic helpers, some of whom I have worked with for the past 4 years. It has been great meeting you all and look forward to bumping into you all around the school. Please consider taking on the role of the Canteen Coordinator. It can also work with a team, you don't need to put one together (I have one offer as team member already). Feel free to speak to me if you would like any information on this role. Happy to let you know what it involves. Thanks for your support over the years. Danielle

Many hands make light work! We love our Canteen, and want it to continue. Please think about whether you, or you and a group of friends, might be prepared to put your hands up to Coordinate the Canteen or

join a Canteen Coordinator’s Group. What’s involved?

The role can be what you (or a Canteen Coordinator’s Group) make of it – you can pick which day or days the canteen is open, whether to open for recess and/or lunch, what items are on the menu

The role involves shopping, processing orders (beautifully written out by our kids on brown paper bags),

rostering staff (roster done for the end of the year for Mondays), food preparation, checking temperatures and putting food away

Page 8: JASON’S JOURNAL · Friday 21 December 1:00 – 1:30pm Assembly (last day of 2012 - early dismissal) challenged by her ‘growth-mind’ mindset, which is the belief that all children

You (or a Canteen Coordinator’s Group) also need to gain or have a qualification in food handling and supervision, but the cost of this will be covered by the PA

A Canteen Coordinator’s Group would work wonderfully, you could divide up days each month, or divide

up tasks to reduce the workload

You can say when you would like to be up and running. Danielle will continue to be available to provide training and support until you are up and running, and she has everything ready so the canteen can be up and going smoothly again.

The Canteen is something that our kids really enjoy, it gives us parents a day off from making school lunches and it provides a significant source of fundraising for the PA – funds which are then put back into the school. It is also personally rewarding, from that wonderful feeling you get from helping out and making a contribution. If you are thinking this role might be for you, or you are interested in being part of a Canteen Coordinator’s Group, contact Jason - [email protected], or Danielle on 0411 022 851 [email protected]

Diary date: PA Morning Tea We’ll be holding a morning tea / information morning where you can have a chat to some PA members and learn more about the PA in an informal setting on Friday, 31 August. When: From drop off until 11.00am Where: DJ Centre

We’d love to see you, along with any littlies you have in tow!

PA Meeting report Our PA meeting was held last Wednesday. At the meeting we:

• Recorded our thanks to Danielle and discussed how canteen would need to close unless or until a new coordinator is found

• Approved a spending request of $400 to fund plants for the upcoming working bee for the school • Discussed the handover of uniform shop coordination from Andy to Allison and Mel • Heard updates on various events being coordinated by the PA, including Milo Mornings, the Pie and

Chocolate Drives, Fathers Day Stall and Hot Dog Day • Heard a report on School Council from Maya • Received an update on the PA rejuvenation plan, including the return of helping friends forms, planning

information for 2013 Prep parents on the PA and an Information Morning Tea • Discussed Andy’s resignation as PA president at the end of this year after a 2 year tenure.

Working Bee on this Saturday The school’s working bee is this Saturday 11 August from 9.00am to midday. The PA has provided $400 in funds to the school for plants and plant stakes, so come along and help everyone plant them! Please also be careful to keep off the garden beds at school so the new plants don’t get trampled on. You don’t have to come along for the full three hours, dropping in for one hour with the kids is a huge assistance, and Dean will be putting on a sausage sizzle as well.

‘Milo Fridays’ start this week On Friday 10, 17, 24 and 31 August we are running ‘Milo Friday’ to warm cold hands and tummies. Thank you to Rebekah, Miranda and Sharee for organising these mornings. Cost: $1.00 When: Recess time Where: Bring your dollar to the canteen and swap it for a yummy warm cup of Milo

Chocolates home this week The chocolates will be going home this Friday, 10 August, so please keep a look out. Happy Chocolate selling and remember, for every box sold we raise $30 for the school, with proceeds going towards a great new recreation area for the kids at the mini-oval. Thank you to Carolyn for coordinating the drive.

Pie Drive At the end of term two Susanne Sands coordinated a Pie Drive for the families and staff at Blackie Lake. As well as 56 families and staff getting to take home pies for the school holidays, a profit of $789 was made for the PA. Thank you to Susanne for coordinating the drive, and to Keren Evans who took over for the last few days.

Next meeting: Wednesday 5 September

Please diarise Wednesday 5 September as our next meeting date. We will have teleconference facilities available at future meetings, so if you’re home alone with the kids, but would like to join in or learn more about what we do and dial into our meeting, contact Lisa on 0409 773 849 / [email protected]
