JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

The term is nearly over and many exciting extracurricular activities have taken place. Each of these activities is directly linked to our curriculum and endeavour to increase the level of student engagement across the school. Engaging our parent community has also taken place through teachers making themselves available for Getting To Know You Interviews, Classroom Literacy Helpers training workshops, Instrumental Music Program recruitment night, and our Parent Representatives program launched (with thanks not only to our volunteers, but also to the families who have returned their contact details). I thank all teachers for the care and skill they show on a daily basis – an important ingredient to the successful culture of learning at Blackburn Lake Primary. As a teaching team we have a strong emphasis on our collective responsibility for all the children, ensuring the teachers at each level share the same learning focus in their weekly planning and lessons. The teachers also regularly discuss individual student’s progress in Monday team meetings, sharing assessment data and planning together for future learning. LANGUAGES PROVISION @ BLPS Following the retirement of the school's Italian teacher at the start of this year we were fortunate to have Judy Mansell – a regular replacement teacher at BLPS – run an Italian cultural program this term on short notice. Many thanks Judy. A staff selection panel considered the parent feedback from an online survey and shortlisted several applications for interview (with applications across a variety of Languages). Following this process we will welcome Sonia Gaetano-Tortelli next term, having no doubt that Sonia will add to the strong culture of teaching and learning at BLPS and reinvigorate the Italian program at Blackburn Lake Primary. With Sonia’s contract until the end of this year we intend to survey our school community again later in the year to gain a sense of the future direction of Languages at Blackburn Lake Primary School. SCHOOL COUNCIL At our AGM this week School Council tabled and endorsed the Blackburn Lake Primary School 2015 Annual Report. This document follows a format required by all Government schools and publishes performance data relating to School Profile, Student Outcomes, Attendance, Wellbeing and a Financial Summary. This Annual Report will be published on the school website for your information once ratified by the Department. I once again thank outgoing Councillors for their contributions to the school, specifically acknowledging the work of outgoing parent members David Taylor, Kris Penny, Sharee Baklien and Dean Conman, as well as (teacher representative) Deb McDermott for their contributions to Council. We also had the first meeting of the new School Council earlier this week and elected the Executive positions for 2015. My thanks and congratulations to the following Councillors who have accepted nominations to the positions of:

President – Mark Eaton Vice President – Lisa Croxford Treasurer – David Spong Minutes Secretary – David Dowson

At this meeting we also nominated Conveners for the School Council subcommittees for 2015. The subcommittees are a very important part of the School Council process and I have included a short explanation below for your information.

What do sub-committees do? • Assist Council in the work that needs to be done. They report regularly at School Council meetings, provide advice and make recommendations to School Council which has the final responsibility for decisions. Subcommittees cannot make decisions for School Council; rather they make recommendations to Council; • Are open to non-School Council members and therefore provide opportunities to involve people in the school who are not members of School Council; • The Council subcommittees sometimes have working parties that are set up for a specific task for a set period of time. An example of a working party might be related to the development of an event – for example, the school’s 50th anniversary. Working parties are covered by the same rules as subcommittees. They cannot make decisions but instead make recommendations to either a subcommittee or School Council.

I would like to invite any interested community members to become involved in one of the Council subcommittees listed below. The meetings will generally be on a Tuesday and will be publicised in the Lakeside News. If you would like to discuss the possibility of contributing to Blackburn Lake Primary in this way, please feel free to give me a call, or contact the Conveners as listed below.

Finance – Convener – David Spong Finance monitors school budgets, income and expenditure, as well as making recommendations regarding financial policies.

Page 3: JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message · 2015-03-26 · JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message The term is nearly over and many exciting extracurricular activities

Education - Convener – Allison Duffy Policy & Planning is involved with writing new policies covering any aspects of the school program that need that type of documentation. They also conduct a cyclic review and update all existing policies. Facilities – Convener – Andy Baugh Grounds look after the external environment of the school, gardens and playground areas. They organize working bees for routine maintenance and also grounds improvement projects. Marketing & Communications – Convener – Mark Eaton Marketing and Communications looks at promoting our school and improving communications across the school and community.

END OF TERM Don’t forget to support tomorrow’s free dress day, organized by the Student School Council (see “update” below) to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. With tomorrow’s end of term there is an early finish at 2:30pm (our weekly whole school assembly beginning at 2:00pm); and whilst there will be no Students Of The Week for this final assembly, our Student School Councillors will present the highlights of the term through the “Blacky Lake News” (incorporating a marimba item). Unfortunately the school has recently been subjected to vandalism and as we all take pride in our school this is most upsetting. In speaking to Whitehorse Police (who are viewing recent school cctv footage) they have given priority to our school, and urge any families who see any suspicious activity to ring 000 direct (also making any reports to Department of Education Emergency Management on 9589 6266). Have a safe Easter break and see you when second term commences on Monday 13th April. Warm regards, Jason Walker - Principal [email protected]

STUDENT SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE

TEAM LAYLA 2015

Sunday 22nd March saw 167 runners and walkers stand out from the crowd in their bright yellow Team Layla T-shirts in the Royal Children's Hospital's Run for the Kids. Amongst this group was a huge contingent of Blackburn Lake Primary School families and teachers. Well done to everyone who participated. This Friday, our school is holding a free dress day (bring a gold coin) to help raise money for Team Layla. All contributions will be donated to the Good Friday Appeal. The SSC (Student School Councillors) will be wearing their yellow Team Layla t-shirts proudly on Friday to remind all students their contributions are going to the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal to continue the amazing work they do to help children like Layla Hopkins. Layla spent her first 9 months in hospital, followed by active support from the Royal Children’s Hospital until she was 4. She is now in grade 2 at our school, and doing very well thanks to the Royal Children’s Hospital. If you would like to make a special donation to Team Layla and the Good Friday Appeal, following is the fundraising link: http://run.gofundraise.com.au/page/Layla Thanks in advance for supporting this fantastic fundraising event. SPORTS REPORT SUMMER SPORT ROUND ROBIN Well done to our grade 6’s who took part in last weeks’ interschool sport. Our girls’ Volleystars did very well also. They made the grand final but lost in a close game to Blackburn. Our Basketballers and cricketers played hard all day in what was a long but enjoyable day By all accounts the grade 5s also had a successful day back at school with their house sport activities.

HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY Our annual House Cross Country will be run on Friday 24 April. Get out there and start training. More information in the coming weeks.

SCHOOL BANKING - Every WEDNESDAY is School Banking Day

Taking part in School Banking is easy If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. If not, you can open one at any Commonwealth Bank branch, or if you are an existing customer with the bank with access to NetBank you can open the account online. Alternatively, we have application forms - just come and get one from us on School Banking Day.

Rewards Program 2015 To encourage regular savings behaviour the program offers an exciting Rewards Program. Every deposit earns your child a Dollarmites token, and once they’ve collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for a reward. We will be putting redemption cards into your bank books in the next few weeks so you will be ready to order your Term 1 reward when you have 10 tokens.

In a School Banking first, the Commonwealth Bank is introducing a new Grand Prize competition in 2015. Students who make 25 deposits or more in 2015 will automatically receive an entry into the competition draw to win a trip to California’s Disneyland. OUT OF HOURS SCHOOL CARE UPDATE

Saturday 21st March was Harmony day. The children had fun in the OSHC room creating their own people to add to the harmony wall and a group discussion on what the day is all about. We are celebrating 15 years this year! A new space has been created in the OSHC room too! We now have a chill out/home corner. Here the children can enjoy some quiet reading time and fun playing with new chalk board. It’s a big hit for all age groups! The entrance to the service now has a program book with activities groups and individual children have been getting up too. It is on display for children and families to have a browse through. We also have a photo activities book where the children's wonderful creations are on display for all to see. All term we have been working really hard in the OSHC room. We have had a raffle entry going for their hard work. Children are put into the raffle when they are helping out the carers in the room and amazing attitudes in the OSHC room. It has been great to see children taking responsibility of the room and offering their help within the program. Great work OSHC kids! The raffle has been drawn and the winners of Term 1 are: * Holly White * Mitchell Saunders * Ella Black We wish you all a fun and safe Easter break. Thank you, The OSHC Team :)

Knock Knock, We need new Knickers and Knocker

Holders!!

We have been approached by the Safe Futures Foundation who work with women and children

who have experienced Family Violence. One of the things they do is to assist families who have

had to leave their home in order to protect themselves. No-one wants to wear borrowed or

used knickers or bra’s at any time, but especially when you have had to leave behind so much and

may be feeling really sad. In order to provide some nice personal comforts, Safe Futures

Foundation provides families with as much as possible to start over. They are currently in

desperate need of NEW underpants for Girls, Boys and Women, and NEW bras. Safe Futures

Foundation ask for a variety of sizes, from petite to buxom, so talk to each other and see what

sizes are missing!

A washing basket will be located in the reception of the school for you to pop in your

KNICKERS AND KNOCKER HOLDERS!

Thankyou in advance for all your help!

“Be a SUPERHERO FOR AUTISM Superhero Fun Run

29th March 2nd April (World Autism Day)

What does Irabina do? Irabina is Victoria’s largest provider of much needed services and support programs to over 15,000 families living with Autism today. Irabina Childhood Autism Services specialise in delivering programs for children and adolescents diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. We are the largest Autism specific service in Australia, and have been providing services for the past 45 years. We recognise that having Autism not only affects the child but affects the whole family and therefore all programs delivered are family centred. We work alongside families to provide Autism education and skills to assist the children and parents or carers on their journey. Why Superheroes? Most children love superheroes at some time in their lives. Many people with Autism, however, have almost a fixation with Superheroes that extends way past childhood and well into their adult lives. It gives them a pillar to lean on. A superhero is often perceived as stronger, more resourceful, smarter, faster and more resilient than others around him. Many people on the Autism Spectrum are non-verbal and are unable to articulate what they need, making them some of our community’s most vulnerable, and needing a helping hand or rescue.
