JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

This term’s Level 3 inquiry based unit is The Power of Story - a literacy-based unit with strong links to History and Civics and Citizenship. Integrated Studies provides a rich context for student work and in 3K earlier this week I saw firsthand the engagement of the children fascinated with exploring myths, legends and fables from different lands. For Tuesday morning, the children were assigned their rotational activities – the task board (pictured) on the interactive whiteboard guiding students to their task requirements and the “learning intention” (that is, the purpose of the activities). Class teacher Kym (along with Teacher Aides Ros and Julie) worked with small groups of children to complete the tasks. I was most impressed with the high standards of work set and achieved and the teacher questioning (not to mention the efficient way the children navigated the classroom to get equipment and resources) enabled each group to make the most of their valuable learning time. Time on task is a key ingredient for successful student outcomes and ensuring one hour of Reading, one hour of Writing, and one hour of Maths daily is something we pride ourselves on at Blackburn Lake Primary School. The Reading hour activities consisted of (i) Guided Reading with Kym, (ii) a comprehension activity on www.ziptales.com.au on the interactive whiteboard, (iii) Thinkers Keys (20 strategies for generating quality thinking on the theme) independent tasks, (iv) using research from last week’s Literacy rotations to create a PowerPoint presentation on a mythical creature and (v) an editing task. I assisted the children with correcting deliberate spelling and punctuation errors, such as The Legend of Heracles. Can you find 7 capital letters, 4 full stops, 3 spelling mistakes, and 3 verb tense errors in the text: the baby heracles lay fast asleep to serpents slither around his crib and reared their ugly heades befour they could striked, heracles wake up, grabbed the giant snakes and strangled them the hero of greece had just performed his first feat. Thanks Kym Morgan for her terrific coordination of the Level 3 team this year – challenging our students. UNIFORM As mentioned in last week’s Lakeside News the conversation in relation to proposed modifications to our School Uniform continued on Tuesday night at Education Subcommittee and School Council. Thank you to those parents / carers who participated in our consultation process, with the streamlined Uniform as follows:

As soon as all “old” options and stock are sold out we look forward to creating a greater sense of recognition, belonging and school pride through our uniform School Uniform. FEEDBACK We invite ideas and constructive feedback or comments to enhance our school regarding policy matters. Often the best way to do this is to attend a School Council Subcommittee Meeting to see how you might contribute, or to see myself or Loisia at the school. Another way we seek parent thoughts is via online surveys, and I remind families that we are seeking your

opinion on a) our Grade 4 camp @ http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ND9X78X, and b) the possibility of a

future 1:1 iPad Program for Years 5 and 6 students @ http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BVW6B8S BLPS TURNS 50! What a year 2014 is looking like for the “Blacky Lake” community, with our Autumnfest Fete in March and the celebration of the 50 years since the opening of our wonderful school for the wider Blackburn community. Discussions at last week’s Autumnfest Meeting planned for a part of the Fete to acknowledge the school’s 50th birthday and likewise, at this week's School Council Meeting, the Council decided to form a Working Party so that a team of volunteers can work together to plan a fitting celebration for our 50th Birthday. If you would be prepared to join this planning team, we would love to hear from you. You will not need to be on School Council, nor attend SC meetings. Rather, the Working Party will develop and oversee the planning of a suitable event(s) to mark this significant time in our school's history. Meetings will be scheduled by the members of this team, once formed. Please contact me if you are willing to assist. ELECTION DAY SATURDAY The Parents Association are planning to take advantage of the crowd who will visit Blackburn Lake Primary on Election Day as the school will again be a polling booth – this time utilising our DJC gymnasium. Thanks to everyone who is supporting – whether it be making a cake, cooking sausages, or volunteering to serve at the Canteen on Saturday - we value the support of our families and every contribution will help to improve the school.

I hope to see you at tomorrow’s whole school Assembly @ 3pm, as we acknowledge our ‘Students of the Week’ and I hand out my final Pancakes From The Principal vouchers for 2013, Regards, Jason Walker - Principal [email protected]

ICT @ BLPS This term we launched our campaign to become an eSmart school. To support the integration of iPads, desktops and devices in our school, the eSmart Program enables a generation of young people equipped to be smart, safe and responsible online. Young people see digital technology - including the Internet, social networking services and mobile phones - as a normal part of their social life and connecting with their

Election Day Cake Stall! Saturday 7th September 8am-2pm Labels (for ingredients), plates and information have been distributed. There were some paper muffin cases and paper cake trays that were randomly distributed but there is no obligation to use these. There are some spares near the office if you would like. If everyone cooks up a cake the money we raise could be substantial! It is a great chance to gain funds from outside the regular school community so please cook up something for the stall. PA plans to put the funds raised to the refurbishment of classroom furniture.

Cakes can be dropped off at the Canteen in the DJ Centre between 3.00 -4.00pm on Friday (tomorrow) or on Saturday 8.00 -10.00am.

Please email me on [email protected] or call on 0412 087 663 if you can help out.

Election Day BBQ Saturday 7 September Helpers required

Have you got an hour or two to help with the Election Day BBQ? As the saying goes, the more hands make light work, so the more volunteers, the

shorter the shifts.

This is a great fundraiser for our school and quite a social event. A great way for the dads to get involved but we need the mums as well.

If you are willing to help can you please contact Carolyn at [email protected] or text me on 0432887751

If you have a connection with a butcher who may be willing to donate / discount sausages can you please

contact me. In return we will have signage promoting their business.

Father’s Day Stall. We hope the Dads and Grandfathers enjoyed their special day last Sunday!

Thank you very much to the Mums who helped run the Father’s Day stall. Thank you also to Dean for sourcing the garden decorations from Bunnings. Over $1,000 was raised on the morning, with the proceeds supporting the work of the Parents’ Association.

PA Treasurer’s role – this could be you? Research shows that being involved in your child’s school improves learning outcomes. What better way to get involved than through the PA! And if you have trouble getting to events during the day or on weekends, this could be the opportunity you are looking for. Rebekah Rae has been our PA Treasurer for the past few years. However, as her Grade 6’er will be at high school next year, Bec will be resigning her position at the end of this year. Are you interested in taking on the position? It involves less than 2-3 hours per month and covers: - liaising with finance staff in school office re PA finance matters; - preparing summary reports of transactions for PA for each meeting based on reports from the school

office; - keeping track of expenditure committed to at PA meetings to ensure amounts approved match final

outgoing; - supporting event co-ordinators in handling the financial aspects of events / fundraisers; - preparing full year reports for the PA for the AGM & School Council. As Bec herself said “Who wouldn’t want this job!” Be quick to avoid disappointment and let one of the PA Exec know if you are interested. No prior financial experience required!

Our School Raffle Tickets We are participating in the 2013 Our School Raffle. This raffle is organized by Scouts Victoria for the benefit of schools like BLPS. Our involvement is in selling raffle tickets and $1:50 from the sale of each $2 raffle ticket goes to BLPS. There are a HUGE number of prizes (123 to be exact), ranging from a Toyota Prius C Hybrid valued at $28,912, to travel prizes, bikes, scooters and $100 gift cards. Prize draw is on 13 September 2013. We will be selling these at school before and after school so look out for our table and come and buy a ticket (or help us “man” the table). If you are happy to take a book of 10 and sell the tickets to your family and friends (or worst enemies) please email [email protected] and we will get a book to you. We only have 50 books/500 tickets to sell so please get involved in this simple Fundraising exercise.

Next Meeting next Wednesday Our next PA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 11 September Meetings start at 7.30 pm and are held in the staffroom. Everyone is welcome.
