1. Nautical ChartsNautical Charts are published to cover the Japanese coasts, Pacificand Indian Ocean and their adjacent seas. They are mainlyconstructed on Mercator's projection, and most of those chartscovering the waters around Japan at a scale smaller than 1:100,000are compiled at the scale based on the length of the longitude at Lat.35°. Electronic Navigational Charts are published to cover theJapanese coasts.2. Miscellaneous ChartsThese charts are used for referential purposes in navigation,scientific studies etc., furnishing various kinds of information suchas geomagnetism, ocean currents, tidal streams, nautics, maneuverareas, set net fisheries, routeing, guide, etc.. Also included are: PilotCharts, Position Plotting Sheets, Chart Symbols and Abbreviations inbooklet, etc. 3. Basic Maps of the SeaThese maps include Basic Maps of the Sea in Continental ShelfAreas (1:200,000 or 1:500,000 or 1:1,000 000; a set of the Mapcomprising a Bathymetric Chart, Submarine Structural Chart,Gravity Anomaly Chart, Magnetic Anomaly Chart) Basic Maps ofthe Sea in Coastal Waters, (1:10,000 or 1:50,000; a set of the Mapcomprising a Bathymetric Chart and Submarine Structural Chart),Basic Maps of the Sea in Ocean (1:3,000,000), etc. Lambert'sconformal conic projection is mainly used for compilation of thesemaps and charts.4. Aeronautical ChartsThese charts include World Aeronautical Charts (WAC,1:1,000,000) based on the standards of the International CivilAviation Organization (ICAO), and Aeronautical Route Charts(1:1,000,000) covering the whole area of Japan with four sheets.Lambert's conformal conic projection is used for compilation ofthese charts.5. Publicationsi) Sailing Directions The Sailing Directions cover almost the samearea covered by the nautical charts. The Sailing Directions for theJapanese coasts, Japanese version and English version, are dividedinto five volumes which are published as "Original Editions" ofJapan. Supplements to Sailing Directions are published forcorrections on the latter information after their publications. ii)Special Publications Nautical Almanac, Abridged Nautical Almanac,and Tide Table are published annually, List of Aids to Navigationevery two years and Distance Table, Passage Pilot etc. irregularly.Addition to List of Aids to Navigation is published monthly.

Training courseThe JHOD is conducting group training course “Hydrography for Charting,Disaster Management" (Internationally accredited Category B for HydrographicSurvey). This training course is implemented as part of the technical cooperationby the Japanese Government for developing countries through the JICA.
