EKA is continuing our greeting card recycling program by collecting all unwanted greeting cards. This includes cards that have writing in them. All the
greeting cards will be donated to the St. Jude’s Ranch in Boulder City where the kids will cut them apart to make new cards that are sold in their gift shop. Please drop off your greeting cards into the wrapped box at the front
office. We will be collecting cards through the end of May.

Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome back from winter break! We hit the ground running for 2nd semester with Scantron testing (our second round of testing) in January. You will be able to see your student’s progress in Math & Reading when these are given to you at our next set of Parent/Advisor Conferences at the end of the 3rd quarter. We will be giving awards for Study Island to the top performing advisory (middle school) and top performing students (middle school) for their work during first semester. The top 3 classes in middle school for Study Island blue ribbons earned were Mrs. Perich’s advisory with 555 blue ribbons, Ms. Leckie’s advisory with 390 blue ribbons and Ms. Rudolph’s advisory with 340 blue ribbons. The top 5 students in grades 6, 7, 8 for Study Island blue ribbons were Lawrence F. (80), Liliana W. (78), Celeste T. (73), Rachel S. (71) and Annison H. (61). We will also be giving awards in January for perfect attendance during the first semester, students without any absences or tardies in any class. There were 34 students at the secondary campus on the perfect attendance list which you can find in this newsletter. Secondary students also started their new seminars for 2nd semester in January as well. Ask your student about what they are learning in their seminar! EKA Secondary has a field trip planned for February to the Springs Preserve as part of our Global Project Week which will assist students in doing their Global Project. Be on the lookout for a field trip permission slip coming home about this in January. Report Cards for 1st semester will be mailed out in January as well. As we begin our 2nd semester, we find that certain supplies from the beginning of the year are already starting to dwindle. If you have the ability donate certain of these needed items in the list at the bottom of the page it would be greatly appreciated. These donations will be put directly to use with our EKA students. These items may be dropped off at the front office or sent in with your student. Sincerely, Mr. Keyer EKA Secondary Principal
A NOTE FROM MR. KEYER

It's second semester already! Where did the time go?! To kick off the second semester, EKA students and advisors have been working hard to put new projects on the website Donors Choose. About two months ago, Donors Choose started a student-led initiative where students and teachers could both put projects on the website. We currently have 3 projects that still need funding. These projects are: White Boards for Math Class Video Production Equipment (Project Excelsior) Computer Programming (The Raspberry Pi Project) To find the projects, go to the website www.donorschoose.org and search "Mr. Gromlich". Anything you can do to help would be amazing. Every single dollar counts. Thanks for all you do to help our school and our students! Best Regards, Matt Gromlich

SECONDARY Student Government The EKA Secondary Student Government has been busy. They ended last semester with their Winter Waltz of Wonder Dance and began with their annual Movie and iPad Game Night last week. They are now preparing for their next dance scheduled for the 12th of February. At the last meeting, the students were joined by representatives of the Metropolitan Police force to discuss on campus student concerns and how members of the Student Government could address them. Students will be working on putting into place some of these ideas before the end of the year to improve school spirit and overall community within EKA.
