JANUARY 8, 2017 | EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
Questions to ponder this week: In darkness, we need light. Do believers have a light to de-pend upon? Are nations coming to that light? To the Christ-light? What do you think draws people to the Church today? What is it about Pope Francis that draws people?

A Message
from
Fr. Tony
Herold
Today, the feast of Epiphany brings the Christmas season to an end. To mark the day, here’s a litany called “Now the Work of Christmas Begins” composed by Howard Thurman, an African-American theologian, educator, and civil rights leader. ****************** When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among the people, to make music in the heart. ***************** The most recent Maryknoll Magazine contained the following reflection that seems to fit well with the above litany. It is called, appropriately: The Disturbing Peace of Christ
May the peace of Christ disturb you…and shake you from your dreams To see the reality of life all around you. Despite the storms of war and violence ...Amid tears and bitterness Remember: from the cross of earthly defeats Christ prayed divine forgiveness upon Our ungrateful and indifferent world whose fragile and illusory peace comes from overpowering enemies. No, the shalom of Christ takes root In the heart that refuses to hate In the mind that seeks true justice On the lips that bless, not curse In the soul aware of its dependence on God’s abundant mercy. Only Christ’s peace brings assurance that despite setback, failures, Disappointments and defeat … Amid physical hardship and discouragement While wandering in the wilderness of uncertainty. Not only are we exactly where God wants us to be… But Jesus himself is with us in the struggle.
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
Have you ever seen someone at St. Paul's and thought, "I'd love to get to know that person more..."
Or have you looked around the room and thought "I wish I had more of a chance to sit down
and chat with some of these folks..." Well get ready for that opportunity!!!
Join us for a night of food, fun and fellowship with a twist!
St. Paul the Apostle is hosting it’s first ever "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" event on Saturday, January 21 at
5:30pm. This is an event designed for our community to become better acquainted with each other. You
won't know which St. Paul's friends, new or old, will be at dinner with you until that evening. When guests
come to Denning Hall at 5:30pm, they will receive an envelope with the address of the host home who will
serve them and other guests dinner.
People who have volunteered to serve as hosts, will be notified of the number of guests attending their dinner
(not to exceed six guests). Hosts will be responsible for serving the meal and guests will be asked to bring a
beverage of their choice. Signups are available in the Gathering Space, on the Signup Genius link on our
homepage, or by calling the parish office (563.322.7994).
What would you do if you came for Sunday Mass and there was No Priest present?
This is the case in many locations here in our own Diocese of Davenport.
Become actively involved by supporting vocation awareness and a culture of vocation. Today’s seminarians come from wide variety of backgrounds and
life experiences. “Adopt a Seminarian” displays are in the vestibule.
