WELCOME HOME TO JESUS THE DIVINE WORD CHURCH!
As we interact responsibly with one another during this pandemic, we at Jesus the Divine Word welcome all who are new to our faith
community, returning to the Catholic Church, searching for a spiritual home or simply visiting with us today. We are glad you are with us.
We understand the difficulties associated with these days and want you to feel welcome and at home whether you are with us physically
or through live-stream. It is a blessing to have you here.
If you are interested in learning more about our parish or registering as a parishioner, we invite you to contact our pastor, Fr. John Dakes at [email protected] or any member of our parish staff at
410-414-8304. We also invite you to view other areas of our website - www.jesusdivineword.org – and to download our registration form, the link of
which is on the front page of the website. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you. Welcome!
Dear Friends,
I write this column early on the morning of January 20th, Inauguration Day. Today the 46th President of the United States will take the oath of office. Joe Biden will have much to do as he tackles the COVID-19 pandemic, racial injustice, an economic crisis and more. One of his biggest challenges – in this priest’s opinion - will be to work at healing a divided nation. To this he will need help, our help and most importantly, God’s help.
As our nation begins this new period in our history let us commit to praying for our new president. Whether we voted for him or not, whether his goals are the same as ours or not, let us, as men and women of faith, put our differences aside and pray for our president and our nation. “Nothing will be impossible for God” we recently heard God’s angel say to the lowly Virgin of Nazareth (Lk. 1:37). Nothing is impossible. When we come together as God’s people great things happen. Borrowing a prayer from a former president’s inauguration (with adaptions, of course), let us pray . . . “Eternal God, source of all unity and good, we pray for President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris, to whom you have entrusted leadership of our nation in this moment of history. We pray that you will guide them at bringing our country together that we might rise above differences and seek the larger vision of your will for our nation. Use them to bring reconciliation between the races, healing to political wounds, a newness of life to all affected by this pandemic, that we may truly be one nation under God. Give our new president, and all who advise him, calmness in the face of storms, encouragement in the face of frustration, and humility in the face of success. Give them the wisdom to know and to do what is right, and the courage to say no to all that is contrary to your statutes of holy law. Amen.” (Franklin Graham, 2001 Inaugural Prayer).
Peace and blessings, Fr. John

WELCOME HOME - COVID UPDATE With the rise of COVID cases in the state Governor Hogan has changed the guidelines for churches and all religious establishments. Church capacity has been reduced to
50%. Since we have not reached 50% capacity due to our faithful following of CDC, State and local guidelines requiring social distancing of 6 feet between
individuals/households and the use of facecloths/masks for everyone at Mass there are no changes at JDW at this time. We continue to take seriously the physical and
spiritual health of our parishioners and want to be sure that at no time is someone at risk while in our church. Everyone’s participation in following all the guidelines as well as the instruction of the ushers is essential for this to occur. This includes keeping
facemasks on when approaching the minister for Communion. DO NOT lower your masks until having stepped away from the minister. After placing the Eucharist in your mouth, then please put your mask on again. For further
information regarding participation please see the parish website. Until further notice the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and
Holy Days of Obligation is still in effect. As a reminder, weekday Masses are celebrated Tuesday through Friday at 8:00 AM
with Saturday Morning Mass at 9:00 AM. Sunday Masses are celebrated at 5:00 PM on Saturday and 8:00 and 10:00 AM on Sunday. Doors open 30 minutes before
Mass. Parishioners may choose to sit in the church (as long as there is room) or go directly to Doran Hall. Both the 5 PM and the 10 AM Masses are live streamed. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated on Wednesday evenings from
7:00 – 8:00 PM and Saturday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:30 PM between the priest vesting sacristy and Fr. John’s office. Confessions are celebrated either face-to-face or
with anonymity, all depending on the desire of the penitent. Appointments are also welcomed.
Parish offices are open, though all depending on the day of the week since some staff are working remotely. Office hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM – 3:00 PM.
The best way to reach staff is still through e-mail. All appointments need to be set up in advance through a phone call or e-mail that proper safety procedures can be
guaranteed. Thank you for your continued cooperation and understanding.

SUNDAY OFFERTORY COLLECTION
To return a little more normalcy to our Sunday
Masses we will soon return to collecting offertory donations
during the Preparation of the Altar (at the start of
the Liturgy of the Eucharist).
Instead of placing donations in one of the two baskets currently
near the Holy Water Font as you walk into church,
ushers will use rectangular baskets with long handles to collect the offertory (they will be wearing masks like
everyone in the church).
The return to collecting the offertory will begin
on the 1st Sunday of Lent, February 21st. Thank you for your ongoing support of our parish.

MAKING a SPIRITUAL ACT of COMMUNION 1. If you are not ready to return to the parish for Mass, we invite you to join us for our live streamed Mass at either 5:00 PM on Saturday or 10:00 AM Sunday (rebroadcast at Noon Sunday) or 2. Gather with others in your home and begin your prayer with the Sign of the Cross 3. Take time to read and reflect upon the readings for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time – Jonah 3:1-5, 10; 1 Corinthians 7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20 4. Share your prayers intentions aloud or offer them quietly in your hearts 5. Pray the Lord's Prayer (Our Father) 6. Offer the following Prayer of Spiritual Communion:
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the
Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist.
I love you above all things, and desire to receive you
into my soul.
Since I am unable to receive you
sacramentally at this time,
come spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and
unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen. (An Act of Spiritual Communion by St. Alphonsus Liguori)

CRITICALLY ILL or HOSPITALIZED during the CORONAVIRUS?
Caring for the sick is an important ministry of the Church. In this ministry the Church prays for the sick, visits the
sick, provides the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum (one’s last Communion), if a person is dying.
Though we are living in very unusual times at the present due to the coronavirus, we are still committed to ensuring that no one who is sick will be neglected.
If a person is critically ill or dying we are asking that a family member notify the parish office as soon as possible by calling 410-414-8304 and speaking with
either Fr. John (ext. 11) or Bobbie Woollen (ext. 10).
A reminder, too, that the parish emergency phone number (to be used only when someone is critically ill or dying) is 443-624-2692.
Please call only, do not text (it’s a flip phone). Please note, too, that clergy are required to follow certain directives at the hospital and nursing home at this time
and that those directives could change. Thank you.

With a Father’s Heart:
The Year of St. Joseph
In the introduction to the
letter, Francis explains that
he has wanted to express
some personal reflections
about Joseph, and that the
pandemic only increased
that desire. He points out
that the current crisis has
highlighted the importance
of ordinary, hidden heroes:
“Doctors, nurses,
storekeepers and
supermarket workers,
cleaning personnel,
caregivers, transport
workers, men and women
working to provide essential
services and public safety,
volunteers, priests, men and
women religious, and so
very many others.”
Everyone, the pope says,
“can discover in Joseph—
the man who goes
unnoticed, a daily, discreet
and hidden presence—an
intercessor, a support and a
guide in times of trouble.
Saint Joseph reminds us that
those who appear hidden or
in the shadows can play an
incomparable role in the
history of salvation.”

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus the Divine Word Catholic Church
these gifts, we pray, by sending
There are some important aspects of St. Joseph’s
character that Pope Francis invites us to reflect upon
in Patris Corde.
In the second section of the letter, “A tender and loving
father,” Pope Francis explains how it was through Joseph that Jesus saw “the
tender love of God.” He then calls upon us to—in
imitation of our Heavenly Father and St. Joseph—“learn to look upon our weaknesses with tender mercy.” While the Devil
wants us to condemn ourselves for our frailty, the Holy Spirit approaches us
with tender love. Pope Francis reminds us that if we
cannot accept our own weaknesses, we can easily fall into the trap of judging
and condemning the weakness of others. “That is why,” the letter explains, “it is so important to encounter God’s mercy, especially in
the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where we experience his truth and tenderness.” He goes on,
“That truth always presents itself to us like the merciful father in Jesus’ parable. It
comes out to meet us, restores our dignity, sets us
back on our feet and rejoices for us.” Francis reinforces this point later on, in the
letter’s fourth section (entitled “An accepting
father”), when he writes, “I like to think that it was from Saint Joseph that Jesus drew inspiration for the parable of
the prodigal son and the merciful father.”

THIS YEAR
SAINT OF THE WEEK
By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the
preeminent spokesman of the Catholic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of
the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the titles Doctor of the
Church and Angelic Doctor.
At five he was given to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino in his parents’ hopes that he would choose that way of life and eventually became
abbot. In 1239, he was sent to Naples to complete his studies. It was here that he was first attracted to Aristotle’s philosophy.
By 1243, Thomas abandoned his family’s plans for him and joined the
Dominicans, much to his mother’s dismay. On her order, Thomas was captured by his brother and kept at home for over a year.
Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where he finished his studies with Albert the Great. He held two professorships at Paris, lived at the court of
Pope Urban IV, directed the Dominican schools at Rome and Viterbo, combated adversaries of the mendicants, as well as the Averroists, and argued with some
Franciscans about Aristotelianism.
His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings. The unity, harmony, and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural human
knowledge, pervades his writings. One might expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent defender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, deep enough, to see the whole natural order as coming from God the Creator,
and to see reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished.
The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, uncompleted work, deals with the whole of Catholic theology. He stopped work on it after celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273. When asked why he stopped writing, he replied,
“I cannot go on…. All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me.”
He died March 7, 1274.
