Blessing Your Children and Praying for Others
From Father Walter
Why is it difficult for some people to give
love and affection? Some parents are
unable to show love to their children
because their own parents showed no
affection to them, they feel ill at ease. They
can't reach out beyond their own problems or hold resentments toward
their children. They don't know how to care for children or they have
never experienced the love of God in their own lives.
What can parents do if they are unable to show love? They can call
upon spiritual resources, pray for inner healing, read the Word. They can
affirm or teach the children to affirm "I like myself because I am a child
of God. They can seek professional help, if necessary. They can bless
their children!
Blessing Your Children
A parent's blessing is holy. It can be powerful! If your home is
not all that you would like it to be, try blessing your children. Do it
simply and reverently.
Say "I bless you in the Name of God who created you, in the
Name of Jesus who died for you and in the Name of the Holy Spirit who
makes you holy."
Vary the blessing to suit the occasion. Say what you wish for that
person "May the angels guard you and keep you safe on this weekend of
travel." "May Jesus take away your fears and fill you with His love and
peace." While saying the blessing, make the sign of the cross on the
forehead with your thumb. (Use holy water if you wish.)
St. Ambrosie said, "You may not be rich; you may not have great
possessions to give to your children, but one thing you can give
them…the heritage of your blessing. It is better to be blessed than to be
rich.”

Praying for Others
God has entrusted us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:19). We can continue God's work
of grace by bringing God's love and healing to others, especially to our families.
Many children are suffering from negative experiences…. rejection, lack of
love and affection or other hurts. Parents need to reach out to these children in love by praying for
them. While your child is asleep ask Jesus to touch with His healing love any area of the child's spirit
which may have felt rejection, fear, unlove, etc.. Ask the Lord to supply the love that may have been
lacking.
You may visualize Jesus touching or holding the child. Pray that the Resurrection power of
Jesus would flow through the child to set her/him free from all that hinders growth. Then use your faith
imagination to visualize the child happy and well, responding to the love
received. Pray that the child may be protected from harm. Ask God to send angels to watch over
her/him.
If you feel that you are responsible for some of the hurts, ask forgiveness from God and forgive
yourself. Pray to accept the child as he or she is.
Thank God for what is happening. Recall Mark 11:25…. "I give you my Word, if you are ready to
believe that you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer, it shall be done for you.”
MAY THE MONTH OF MARY – Marian Readings
May 17
MARY: THE SORROWING MOTHER
"Our Lady is there listening to the words of her Son, united to him in his
suffering, when he cried out ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?' What could she do? She united herself fully with the redemptive
love of her Son and offered to the Father her immense sorrow, which
pierced her pure heart like a sharp-edged sword."
Let us offer to our Mother today: The mortification of keeping quiet about
any pain or discomfort, any inconvenience or disappointment, uniting it
with her pain as she stood by her crucified Son.
May 18
MARY: THE CO-REDEMPTRIX
"It is with good reason that the popes have called Mary co-
redemptrix. ‘So fully, in union with her suffering and dying Son,
did she suffer and nearly die; so fully, for the sake of the
salvation of all souls, did she abdicate the rights of a mother
over her Son, and immolate him, insofar as it was in her power,
to satisfy the justice of God, that it can rightly be said that she
redeemed mankind together with Christ.' This gives us a deeper understanding of that
moment in the Passion of our Lord on which we shall never tire of meditating: Stabat autem
iuxta crucem Iesu mater eius, ‘There, standing by the cross of Jesus, was his mother.'"
Let us offer to our Mother today: Five small hidden sacrifices in honor of the five major
wounds of our Lord.
May 17, 2015
May 19
MARY: HER FAITH
"If our faith is weak, we should turn to Mary. St. John tells us
that it was because of the miracle that Christ performed, at his
mother’s request, at the marriage feast at Cana that ‘his disciples
learned to believe in him’. Our Mother is always interceding with
her Son, so that he may attend to our needs and show himself to
us in such a way that we can cry out, ‘You are the Son of God!' "
Let us offer to our Mother today: The "Memorare" for the person in our family who most
needs the help of our Lady.
May 20
MARY: OUR HOPE
"Our Lady, a full participant in the work of our salvation, follows in the
footsteps of her son: the poverty of Bethlehem, the everyday work of a
hidden life in Nazareth, the manifestation of his divinity in Cana of
Galilee, the tortures of his passion, the divine sacrifice on the cross, the
eternal blessedness of paradise.
"All of this affects us directly, because this supernatural itinerary is the
way we are to follow. Mary shows us that we can walk this path with confidence. She has
preceded us on the way of imitating Christ; her glorification is the firm hope of our own
salvation. For these reasons we call her ‘our hope, cause of our joy.' "
Let us offer to our Mother today: A smile when we do not feel like smiling.
May 21
MARY'S PRAYER
"Let us ask the Blessed Virgin to make us contem-
platives, to teach us to recognize the constant calls from
God at the door of our heart. Let us ask her now: Our
Mother, you brought to earth Jesus, who reveals the
love of our Father God. Help us to recognize him in the
midst of the cares of each day. Stir up our mind and will
so that we may listen to the voice of God, to the calls of
grace."
Let us offer to our Mother today: A visit to Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.
May 22
MARY: EVER VIRGIN
"The purity, humility, and generosity of Mary are in sharp contrast to our
wretchedness and selfishness. To the extent that we realize this, we
should feel moved to imitate her. We too are creatures of God, and if we
strive to imitate her fidelity, God will surely do great things in us. Our
small worth is no obstacle, because God chooses what is of little value so
that the power of his love may be more manifest."
Let us offer to our Mother today: The prayer "Blessed be your purity"

MARY: QUEEN OF THE APOSTLES
"If we take our Lady's hand, she will make us realize more fully that all
men are our brothers -- because we are all sons of that God whose
daughter, spouse, and mother she is. Our neighbors' problems must be
our problems. Christian fraternity should be something very deep in the
soul, so that we are indifferent to no one. Mary, who brought up Jesus
and accompanied him through his life and is now beside him in heaven,
will help us recognize Jesus as he crosses our path and makes himself
present to us in the needs of others."
Let us offer to our Mother today: A kind word, a friendly conversation, a helping hand to
persons with whom we live or work.
TRAVELING COMPANIONS
When angels appear in the Bible, they usually deliver a short message and
disappear, but there is one time when an angel came to earth and stayed
awhile.
The Book of Tobit includes elements you'd expect in a folk tale: a hero on a
journey for treasure; a damsel in distress, and dragon-like foes. That's
because although the story has a historic setting, it is inspired fiction. This
imaginative quality doesn’t make it any less inspired than other types of
writing in Scripture. As Jesus showed by using parables, fiction can reveal
the works of God.
St. Raphael whose name signifies "Medicine of God," seems to be at the head of the angelic
medical staff. His reputation as physician and as guide of travelers is due to the story in Holy
Writ which relates how he brought healing to the elder Tobias, released Sara from being
molested by the devil and gave to the youthful pilgrim in his charge, safety, guidance and
most noble companionship.
Two Families in Trouble At the time of our story the Jews
were held in captivity by their enemies. Among the captives
was a holy and just man called Tobit. His daily prayers and
acts of charity towards his neighbor made him very pleasing
to God, who as we shall see, gave him in return an exceeding
great reward. The story opens with elderly Tobit, who lived in
Nineveh (present-day Mosul, Iraq) with his wife, Anna, and young-
adult son, Tobiah. In Ecbatana (near Tehran, Iran) young-
adult Sarah lives with her parents Raguel and Edna. All six characters are
presented as faithful Jews exiled after Assyria invaded Israel around 721 BC.
There are serious problems in both families. In exile, Tobit was particularly noted for his diligence in
attempting to provide proper burials for fallen Israelites. In Nineveh, Tobit is punished for aiding his fellow
Jews: he loses his government job and sinks into poverty. After burying a man who had been murdered on
May 17, 2015
the street, Tobit slept in the open and was blinded by bird droppings that fell in his eyes. He felt humiliated
for having to depend on his wife's earnings. Meanwhile, in faraway Ecbatana, a young woman
named Sarah appeared to be cursed: on her wedding night, a demon
abducted and killed the groom before the marriage could be
consummated. This proceeded to happen with six more husbands! She
is tormented by grief and shame.
In despair, both Tobit and Sarah ask God to take their lives. God hears their prayers;
but he has a different plan, He jogs Tobit's memory about a loan he made years
before to a friend near Ecbatana. Assuming that he is about to die and wishing to
secure the future of his wife and son, Tobit sends Tobiah on a long and perilous
journey to recover the money.
An Angel in Disguise The 325 miles between Nineveh and Ecbatana is not exactly a secure
zone. Traveling by himself, especially on the return trip with a pile of cash, Tobiah would
have a good chance of ending up robbed, beaten, and left for dead. He would definitely
benefit from a traveling companion.
He runs into just the man, a stranger who knows the way. The stranger identifies himself as
Azariah, son of Hananiah. Actually, he is the angel Raphael. But there is some truth in both
names. Azariah means “ the Lord has helped," and Hananiah means "the Lord has shown
favor"—and God is about to do both.
Raphael-Azariah looks like an ordinary young man—he has no wings or a halo but he quickly proves himself
invaluable.
Crossing a river, Tobiah is attacked by a strange fish. Raphael tells him
to grab it, kill it, and keep the gall, heart, and liver. Further along,
Raphael says that they should spend the night in Ecbatana at Sarah's
parents'. He praises Sarah as “wise, courageous, and very beautiful, and he
suggests that she is the girl for Tobiah. Having heard of Sarah's slain husbands,
Tobiah fearfully demurs. But Raphael assures him that all will be well. Emboldened
by the angel's words, Tobiah asks for Sarah's hand in marriage almost immediately
upon arriving at Raguel's. He persists, despite Raguel’s warning about the fate of the
previous seven grooms, and a marriage contract is quickly drawn up. Sarah’s father,
in secret, began to dig a grave for Tobias who he assumed would die.
One Surprise after Another By evening Tobiah and
Sarah are alone in the bedroom. Following Raphael’s
instructions, Tobiah burns the fish’s heart and liver on
an incense burner. The stench drives the demon
away, and Raphael pursues and binds him. Tobiah
and Sarah say a prayer and climb into bed, blissfully
unaware of the spiritual warfare being waged on their
behalf.
May 17, 2015
The story ends with a crescendo of surprises. There is Raguel and Edna's astonishment
when Tobiah appears hale and hearty for breakfast the next morning. Surprised to find his
son-in-law alive and well, he ordered a double length wedding feast and had the grave
secretly filled. Since he could not leave because of the feast, Tobias sent Raphael to recover
his father’s money.
When he returns to Nineveh - with a bride as well as with the
money he was sent for—it is Tobit and Anna's turn to be
surprised. Not only that, but Raphael tells Tobiah to
place the fish's gall on his father's eyes, and the old man'
sight is miraculously restored.
The final-surprise comes
when Tobit and his son try to pay “Azariah” for his services. “I am
Raphael,” he declares, “one of the seven angels who stand and
serve before the Glory of the Lord.” He bade them give their
thanks to the God of Heaven. Giving the two men a blessing of
peace, he ascends to heaven.
An Angel in Action So what kind of angel is Raphael?
First, he is imperturbable. Nothing surprises him or intimidates him. He does show a trace of impatience when
the human characters don't seem to be moving along with God's plan as he thinks they should (Tobit 5:8,
12). But in general he is calm and composed, with no excitement, anger, or fear. Second, he knows how
to be a good minister of God and a good companion at the same time. He clearly is not a heavenly
robot—a spiritual version of Mr. Spock from Star Trek. He comes across to Tobiah as a likeable, four-
square young man, confident of his abilities, with a rock-solid trust in God. Finally, Raphael is wholly
oriented toward God and never seeks his own glory. At the end of the story, he
deflects any praise of himself by pointing both Tobiah and Tobit toward the true
source of salvation and healing. He exhorts them: “Thank God!” give Him the
praise and the glory. Before all the living, acknowledge the many good things He
has done for you , by blessing and extolling His name in song” (Tobit 12:6).
St Raphael is the angel of peace, of health and of joy. “Joy be to thee always,”
was his salutation to Tobias. He is the angel sent in God’s Providence to guide
and guard, to heal and save. He typifies the watchfulness, tenderness and
helpful affection of our own Guardian angels.
Become Companions We can learn a lot from Raphael, especially in the way he fulfills his
mission to be a companion to Tobiah on a difficult journey.
Pope Francis has been giving us encouragement to become companions to people in their
struggles. "What is important," he says, "is not to see or help them from a distance. No, No! It
is to go and meet them. . . The gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of a face to face
May 17, 2015
encounter with others, with their physical presence which challenges-us, with their pain- and
their pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and continuous interaction." Francis
encourages us to become “companions along the way…walking at people’s side.” He often
highlights the fact that we all share in the grace of Christ and how this grace helps us to have
sincere encounters with each other because we are all part of the same family
If we look, we’ll find countless opportunities to be companions like Raphael. Some are short-
term and require relatively little effort on our part. Perhaps a new person at work, a new
student at school or a new neighbour could benefit from our help while they get oriented.
Other opportunities are more demanding and require us to move a little further out of our
comfort zones. When we walk with another person, let us do it like Raphael, mindful that all
good things come from God.
Raphael helped Tobit and Tobiah to have faith in God’s plans. We
cannot expect to have an angel’s inside knowledge but we can
exercise faith and hope and bear witness to our trust in the Lord. In
fact, with faith in the Lord, we can relax as we accompany others.
After all, we all have angels accompanying us!
The story of Tobit dramatizes how angels
exercise their role as God's messengers and
servants for our good. Essentially, Raphael's activity fits the job
description of a guardian angel. The Church teaches that each of us has
such a helper. This understanding grew out of Jesus' teaching about
God's personal care for each of us, and his words about "little ones"
whose angels continually see the Father's face (Matthew 18:10).
What heIp can we expect from our guardian? Well, look at what Raphael, acting as God's
agent, offers Tobiah. It may help you see how you can call on your angel:
* Protection and health of soul and body. Raphael helps Tobiah to catch the carnivorous
fish; he battles the demon; he equips Tobiah to bring freedom to Sarah and healing to Tobit.
* Personalized help. On the practical side, Raphael sees to it that the journey is safe and
successful. On the spiritual side, he imparts courage and strengthens Tobiah for his mission.
* Guidance. Raphael’s expertise extends beyond knowing the geography of Iraq and Iran.
He guides Tobiah on the journey to God by encouraging him to pray and ask for help. He
gives both general advice on living a good life and specific counsel about God’s plan: marry
Sarah!
In all this, Raphael does not take over. He instructs and encourages, but it is Tobiah who
slays the fish, proposes marriage and puts the fish gall on his father’s eyes.
May 17, 2015
How can you become a more accompanying person?
First, listen. Some of us have children who have
different opinions from ours and some of those opinions
diverge from Church teaching. We know neighbours or
fellow parishioners with whom we disagree. Try to listen
carefully to what they are saying and avoid the
temptation to jump to conclusions or interrupt. Just try to
listen with a compassionate heart.
Second, love. Love helps us to consider other opinions
peacefully. It can bring about a meeting of hearts even if
there can’t yet be a meeting of minds. Remember that
the person you are listening to is loved by God just as much as you are. Think about that
love and let it guard you from judging, condemning thoughts. Let that love keep your heart
soft and your mind open to hear what God is saying to both of you.
Finally, learn. Try to be open to the other person’s point of view. Look for ideas or thoughts
you never considered before. Test them against what you already understand and see if God
is helping you and the other person to grow closer together.
May we all walk together toward the kingdom of God.
PLEASE REMEMBER THOSE WHO NEED OUR PRAYERS
Oh God our Father we pray You restore to physical health, those who are weakened
with illness. Give peace of mind to those troubled with worry and comfort those
discouraged with problems. Help them find their inner strength, a faith and trust in
you and a love for one another to guide them through any health challenges or
troubles they may face. Amen. Please pray for the health of Harvey Lysack. Please pray for the
health of Linda Goral. Please pray for the health of Lou Gollets. Please pray for the health of
Ann Armour. Please pray for the health of Marie Dohan. Please pray for the health of Walter
Latocki. Please pray for the health of Adeline Shymanski.

In our society which now tolerates abortion without qualification, the need for a continuing strong voice on behalf of babies in the womb is more important than ever. At the same time, years of killing pre-born babies has set the stage for the next assault on human life - euthanasia. Today you will find Respect Life Week offering envelopes.
