MANURE STORAGE FACILITY RECORD For JANUARY 2016
Manure StorageRecords w w w The manure management regulations require monthlyinspections of manure storages. A slow leak couldlead to a serious pollutionproblem. Use this calendar to quickly write down whatstorage you inspected, thedate, how many feet ofmanure is currently in the tankand the feet of freeboard (forliquid). Immediately take stepsto fix any problem.

Winter Application w w The manure management regulation defines winter as:December 15 - February 28. The regulation also define winter any-time the ground is frozen at least 4 inches deep or is snow covered. The regulations also state fields receiving fall or winter manure application must have at least 25%cover or a cover crop established toprevent manure runoff to streams. The maximum application rate during the winter season is 5,000gallons/acre of liquid manure or 20 tons/acre of dry non-poultrymanure or 3 tons/acres of dry poultry manure.

Soil Management
w Keep soil covered – frost-seed legumes in hay fields or pasture to reduce bare areas.
w Overgrazing can create mud areas in spring. Keep grass at least 3 inches high.
Barnyards, feedlots, orloafing areas w w w Animal Concentrated Areas (ACAs)are earthen lots where livestockgather. This area has minimal vegetation growth due to heavyhoof traffic and over-grazing.ACAs are not pasture and must be managed differently.Management of these areas mustbe recorded in your conservationplan or Ag. erosion & sedimentation control plan.A few management practicesare:• minimize the size of the denuded area
• installing gutters on buildings next to the ACA
• establish a vegetation filter strip down slope of the ACA
• build a diversion upslope of the ACA

Soil Management
w Minimize erosion. Chemically burn-down or graze cover crops when stand is between 6-15 inchestall.
w Graze livestock on pasture before grasses reach spring flush. However, keep pasture height at least 3 inches by rotating live stock to a new paddock.

Notes w w w
Manure Management w The regulations require a
100-foot setback for manure applications along streams, lakes, or ponds. The setbacks can be reduced to 35 feet if a buffer is established.
w Staff members of your conservation district or USDA-NRCS offices can provide technical assistance in establishing a stream-side buffer.

Soil Managementw Keep soil covered. Maintaining
the soil loss tolerance level (or meeting “T”) is a requirement of the Regs.
w Get good residue cover by timely terminating the cover crop. Killing cover crops too early means too little cover.

Meeting “T” w w w Farms are required to develop anerosion and sedimentation controlplan or a USDA-NRCS conservationplan. In nature, soil constantly formsand erodes. Farming activities disturbthe soil and if left unchecked, topsoilcould erode away quicker than it can be formed. The plan keeps a healthybalance between topsoil created andtopsoil erosion. The goal is to reduceaccelerated soil erosion in the field and at the barnyard to a soil lossTolerance level . . . also known as meeting “T.”

Soil Management
w Plant millet or buckwheat on fields following winter wheat harvest or if the main crop failed.
w Keep soil covered – Limit the time livestock are in one area.A rotational grazing plan keeps pastures in good vegetative state.
