THE NEW YEAR – 2014 – ACCORDING TOTHE EXALTED RULER

HAPPY NEWYEAR TO ALLOUR ELKSOHANA

Wow! AnotherChristmas Seasonhas passed and theNew Year is uponus. Hopefully, this

holiday season was a good one for all. Itseems like yesterday we were all franticabout Y2K, computer scares and theupcoming “turn of the century”. Here itis 14 years later and we have survivedall of it and much more I’m sure. Now itis all just a faded memory. Time passesso quickly that it is important we makeevery day count. For us, as Elks, it is“Sharing and Caring” or in the words ofour Grand Exalted Ruler MillardPickering—“Elks Live…Elks Give”. Itis through the generosity of you, theElks members, which make this community a better place for our keiki,

our veterans and those who most needour help. It is remembering those departed brothers and sisters so that Elksare never forgotten, never forsaken.

Speaking of our Grand Exalted Ruler,he and his wife Susanne will make theirofficial visit to the Hawaii District onSaturday, January 4, 2014. The PearlCity Lodge will be hosting this event.Tickets are limited, but if you are interested in attending, please contact thePearl City Lodge for more information.

For those of you who participated inthe Thanksgiving, Christmas and/or NewYear’s Eve events, I want to thank youfor supporting our Club. What a greatjob by our managers and staff. What agreat job by our Chef, Robert Goya, forputting together such a great meal package. I have heard nothing but raveson how smoothly everything went andhow tasty the food was. If you wereunable to join us during the holidays, please come down and enjoy the loungeor dinner menu. I think you will bepleasantly surprised. There is a newmenu with new drink specials as well.

As this Elks year winds down, pleasenote that our annual election of officerswill be held in February. Nominationswill be made at the first meeting onTuesday, February 11, and the electionat the second meeting on Tuesday,February 25. Are you, or someone youknow, interested in getting involved inthe Lodge? Now is the time to step forward. The new ER will also be soliciting members for various committees. If you have an area of interest, please submit your name to meand I will pass it on.

The Lodge just passed the required 5-year By-law and House Rules revision. All of the proposed changes were published in the November Aloha Elkand voted on at the December 10 Lodgemeeting. This now goes to Grand Lodgefor final approval and adoption. Pleasekeep informed of these changes.

I wish you all continued good healthand prosperity in the New Year andthank you for all you do to support yourofficers and your Lodge.

Remember—“Elks Working Together…

Making a Difference”Bud Lush, ER

THANATOPSIS A poem written by William Cullen

Bryant (an American Poet), in 1811 atage 17, and was first published in 1817.The title comes from the Greek thanatos(“death”) and opsis (“sight”); it has oftenbeen translated as “Meditation uponDeath”.

Why this article you ask? It’s in thebook, Elks (USA) Ritual, “as an optionalpresentation following the InitiationCeremony of new members recited bythe Exalted Ruler or some Member (designated).

For myself, I have heard it recited oncein my twenty years as a Member ofBPOE. I personally recited it once at aMember’s Memorial Service, who wasan Elk Member of 49 years.

Just the other day at my High SchoolClass Xmas celebration, I again recitedit, honoring those who no longer occupythe vacant chairs and to my surprise, after the event, one of the widows cameup to me, and was very complementaryand said, “William Cullen Bryant,Thanatopsis ‘“ I learned it when I was asenior at Farrington High School in1949J English literature”.

That was my “Cheer to a class mate’swidow”.

ELKS ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE

“ELKS CARE - ELKS SHARE”Elks Friends and Families gathered

at the Honolulu Elks Lodge for ourannual celebration in early December tohonor and remember those ELKBrothers and Sisters from our HonoluluElks Lodge who entered the still watersof peace this year.

Lodge Inner Guard, Rich Skizewski, greeted us all at the door of the LodgeRoom with empathy and sincerity as weentered our beautiful Elks Lodge overlooking the ocean waves and gentlebreeze of our flying Flags.

The Elks Ohana listened withreverence to the Exalted Ruler, BudLush; Leading Knight, Augie Rey;Loyal Knight, Hiram Keliipio, and theLecturing Knight, Andy Watson, asthey recited the Elks Memorial DayRituals. As we watched them place theflowers on the Ritual Altar, we weremoved by the words spoken and theheartfelt renditions of the declarationsof their Stations.

As the Lodge Secretary, KeithWilliams, read the names of our AbsentOhana, the Esquire, George del Barrio, with Spiritual Dignity, tapped the empty chairs, each with the name ofone of our beloved and each with a gently-placed white carnation honoringthat member.

The Lodge Chaplain, Delorese, gath-ered us all in prayer after we pledgedour Country’s Flag. Songs of Alohawere sung as we honored the principlesof our Order: Charity, Justice, BrotherlyLove and Fidelity. Augie Rey lead us ina touching rendition of Auld LangSyne, Times Gone By...

After the closing Pule, everyonegathered around, took photos of the designated empty chairs of honor, picked up their loved one’s flowers andreminisced together.

We all enjoyed the beautifully displayed tasty pupu and we graciously

thank George Moniz and the wait stafffor their caring service to us. Familymembers and guests expressed theirgratitude for remembering their lovedones in such a touching Ritual Service. They were appreciative of the Lodgepersonal invitation letters for theService and the personal phone callsreminding them of this very special day.

A special mahalo to all theMembership and their Ohana, theLodge Officers, Past Chairs and ER’swho attended. Although it was a time ofemotional sadness for missing those welove, it was also a time of celebratingtheir lives and what they meant to usduring their tenure with us here onEarth.

AN ELK IS NEVER FORGOTTEN,NEVER FORSAKEN
