CATHEDRAL YOUNG ADULTS
Sunday, January 10, 2021| The Baptism of the Lord|Page 3
https://is.gd/talkparish
This podcast seeks to
create a greater sense of
community among our
parishioners. Each episode
will feature a Cathedral
staff member or parishion-
er in a casual discussion
with Christian Jensen. A
new episode will come out
every other Saturday.
There is a scene in The Lord of the Rings that always gets me choked up.
Aragorn is one of the main characters and status-wise, one of the most important
people in the world of the story. At a point in the story, he finds himself in the
middle of an ugly battle that he has no obligation to be a part of. The forces of
good are vastly outnumbered, and this battle seems to be a certain failure.
Surrounded by lowly farmers and stable boys, Aragorn prepares for battle. “They
cannot win this fight,” his friends tell him as they try to convince Aragorn he is
too important to risk his life in such a hopeless situation, “they are all going to
die.” Aragorn glares at this friend before loudly proclaiming “then I will die as one
of them!”
I think this scene gets me so choked up because Aragorn’s “Kingliness” reflects the Kingship of Christ; Christ,
who enters into the darkness and messiness of His people. Today in the Gospel we see Jesus submitting Himself
to the baptismal waters that He has no obligation to submit to. He humbles Himself to put on “the armor” of the
lowly before entering into the great “battle” of His ministry. He is baptized with us and will die with us, so that we
might resurrect with Him. - Victor Amador

PASTOR’S CORNER
Page 4|Sunday, January 10, 2021| The Baptism of the Lord
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Bapsm of the Lord. This
great event reveals the longawaited Messiah. The Spirit from the
heavens like a dove fills Jesus. We connect Jesus with the promises of
the prophet Isaiah who spoke “on that day, a shoot shall sprout from
the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The Spirit
of the Lord shall rest open him.” The Spirit of the Lord rests upon Je-
sus and thus begins his official ministry and revelaon to the world.

At Jesus’ bapsm, the world sees that he is filled with the gi1s of the
Holy Spirit. Bapsm and Confirmaon become the sacraments by
which we in turn receive these same gi1s. The world not only awaited
the Messiah but also the Church which is His body. We too are filled
with the Spirit, the same spirit which hovered over Jesus at his bap-
sm. We too are a bud that must blossom to reveal the glory of the
Lord.

The following prayer is said over every one of us who has been bap-
zed and confirmed. Today we ask for the courage to be the fullness
of Christs body, sharing his gi1s in a world which sll walks in dark-
ness.
“Allpowerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
by water and the Holy Spirit,
you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave
them new life.
Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their Helper and
Guide.
Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of right judgement and courage,
the spirit of knowledge and reverence.
Fill them with the spirit of
wonder and awe in your presence.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

ESQUINA DEL PASTOR
Sunday, January 10, 2021| The Baptism of the Lord|Page 5

vida. (Juan 3:14-16).

MEMORY VERSE
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only
Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not
perish but might have eternal life.”
At the time of the fulfillment of God’s
promises, the Son of God entered into
human history by assuming a human nature
in the Person of Jesus Christ. God made
His love for us known in the life, Passion,
Death, Resurrection, and Ascension of His
only Son. While His Sacrifice on the Cross
paid the debt of sin and defeated death, it is
not the only part of Christ’s life that is im-
portant. On the contrary, everything Jesus
did gives us a model for how to live. The
Apostles’ Creed does not give us details of
Jesus’ life before His Passion and Crucifix-
ion, but the Gospels do. The Gospels are
the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and
John—the four books of the Bible that tell
the story of Jesus’ life. In the Gospel of
John, Jesus tells us, “I am the way and the
truth and the life” (14:6). Through His life,
Jesus reveals to us the truth of who He is,
the life He has planned for us, and the way
we are to live in order to spend eternity with
Him in Heaven. As the Catechism of the
Catholic Church says: “All that Jesus did
and taught from the beginning until the day
he was taken up to Heaven is to be seen in
the light of the mysteries of Christmas and
Easter” (CCC 512). So, who is Jesus?
This is our study this month. That we might
know with certainty that::
Jesus is God. (Luke 1:32, 35).
 Jesus performed Miracles. (John 20:30-31)
Jesus came to show us the way
to life. (John 3:14-16).

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN
YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS - When God Whispers
“You don’t need to
shout. My hearing
works just fine.” Are
you a parent that has
used that one on
your kids? I’m not
sure at what age they
realize that the vol-
ume of their voice
doesn’t correlate to
the likelihood of re-
ceiving a favorable
reply — it might be
sometime in the teen-
age years, when the
talking slows down
altogether.
But I’ve got to admit,
it would be nice if
God always gave us a
loud and dramatic
sign when He wanted
something — the
booming voice and
the torn-open heav-
ens (“This is my be-
loved Son!”) really
get the message across. Sometimes I find myself envious of the
Apostles, who were able to witness such things in person. The
fact of the matter is, in the year 2021, God is more likely to
speak in a whisper than in a shout. The prophet Isaiah fore-
warns that Christ himself will not be a noisemaker — for all his
preaching, he will not cry out or shout to bring forth justice to
the nations. His way is altogether different than that.
We are not the Apostles, and we do not have the privilege of
seeing the Holy Spirit descended on Christ like a dove. But
here’s the good news: God doesn’t need to shout. Our spiritual
hearing works just fine. We just have to be listening.
Let’s wake up each morning ready to hear God’s whispers
throughout the day. Let’s make a conscious effort to invite
those whispers into our hearts, where they can become a cata-
lyst for grace in this world. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
