Opening HymnWe sing our opening hymn:

How firm a foundation v 1,2,5

(ascribed to Richard Keen)

Page 11: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, BAPTISM OF OUR LORD 13th January 2013

How firm a foundation1. How firm a foundation, you saints

of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent

Word! What more can He say than to you

He has said Who unto the Saviour for refuge

have fled?)

Page 12: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, BAPTISM OF OUR LORD 13th January 2013

How firm a foundation2. Fear not, He is with you, O be not

dismayed: For He is your God, and will still give

you aid: He’ll strengthen you, help you, and

cause you to stand, Upheld by His righteous, omnipotent

hand.)

Page 13: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, BAPTISM OF OUR LORD 13th January 2013

How firm a foundation5. The soul that on Jesus has leaned

for repose He will not, He cannot, desert to its

foes; That soul, though all hell shall

endeavour to shake, He never will leave and will never

forsake. †

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: Friends in Christ:The catechism teaches us that

because we have been baptised, we should keep on drowning the old nature we were born with; everything selfish and sinful in us has to die.

Page 15: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, BAPTISM OF OUR LORD 13th January 2013

15

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

This happens when day after day we are sorry for the wrong things we have done and ask God to forgive us. And the new nature God has given us in baptism should come to life day after day. We should live as new people, who do what is right and good and live with God forever.

Page 16: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, BAPTISM OF OUR LORD 13th January 2013

16

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Therefore, let us draw near to God our Father with a true heart to confess our sins, and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

Page 17: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, BAPTISM OF OUR LORD 13th January 2013

17

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

Page 18: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, BAPTISM OF OUR LORD 13th January 2013

18

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

C: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment.

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Page 19: FIRST SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY, BAPTISM OF OUR LORD 13th January 2013
