Dear Parishioners,

The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord invites us all to an-swer the Call to Holiness as disciples of the Lord Jesus. The desire to grow in the faith is something we all desire.

The Renew My Church Initiative is a spiritual renewal pro-cess which calls together the members of the parish – priests, religious, deacons, and laity – to make unity and Christian community more and more a reality as an authen-tic sign of Christ’s love for his people. Its goal, put simply is that we are all, “Called by Christ to Make Disciples, Build Community, and Inspire Witness.”

It endeavors to initiate and activate the Christian communi-ty and hopes to stimulate the participants to some continua-tion of spiritual growth as individuals and as members of ongoing groups. The Archdiocese of Chicago is in many ways on a journey. It's a destination to be defined by the Lord Himself working in new ways through the unique strengths of each pastor and parish community.

For most, there is little difficulty in acknowledging the need for change; that we must breathe new life into the ways we invite others into discipleship and into a commu-nity of believers.

However, the realities of the grouping process have already taken place in many areas of the Archdiocese, such as in the two Wilmette Parishes of St. Joseph and St. Francis Xavier. These two will be one parish under the leadership of one pastor with two worship sites and will have a new name in 2019.

This type of configuration -- which seemed unimaginable ten years ago -- remains new to many and difficult to imag-ine. It is hard to envision multiple parish/ministry collabo-rations, creating leadership teams, and developing a culture of evangelization.

Though we look for certainty in what the renewal of our Church will tangibly look like, in this new year, a time of hopeful expectation and preparation, let us be reminded of the need to seek tangible renewal within our own hearts. As we pray for greater understanding and wisdom to be agents of renewal in our local church, in what ways are we prepar-ing for our own renewal?

Our individual renewal depends on our present relationship to Jesus and his Church:

Practicing Catholics: ongoing growth and renewal

Non-practicing Catholics: call to reconciliation

For children: call to be formed

For other Christians: invitation to know the fullness of the Catholic faith

For those with no faith: a call to know Christ Jesus and experience new life with Christ and His Church

So what exactly is Evangelization?

It is Prayer, Invitation, Sharing, Witnessing, Encouraging, Welcoming. The Gospel must overflow from each one of our hearts until the presence of God transforms all human existence. As our parish continues efforts to create a culture of evangelization, please pray for guidance and begin to talk to others about your hopes and dreams for the future.

Please let me know if you would like to be a part of this new spiritual adventure at St. John Brebeuf, as we form an “Evangelization Team” and begin to move forward!

Sincerely,

Father Mike Meany

innych do uczniostwa i do wspólnoty wierzących. Proces grupowania miał już miejsce w wielu obszarach archidiecezji, takich jak w dwóch Parafiach Wilmette św. Józefa i św. Franciszka Ksawerego. Nasza indywidualna odnowa zależy od naszej obecnej relacji z Jezusem i Jego Kościołem: ● Praktykowanie katolików: ciągły wzrost i odnowa ● Nie praktykujący katolicy: wezwanie do nawrócenia ● Dla dzieci: wezwanie do formacji ● Dla innych chrześcijan: zaproszenie do poznania pełni wiary katolickiej ● Dla tych, którzy nie mają wiary: wezwanie do poznania Chrystusa Jezusa i doświadczenia nowego życia z Chrystusem i Jego Kościołem Czym właściwie jest ewangelizacja? Jana Brebeuf, ponieważ stworzymy "Zespół ewangelizacyjny" i zaczniemy iść naprzód! Z poważaniem, Ks. Mike Meany

January 13: The Baptism of the Lord After Jesus was baptized, he saw the

Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. As you help those who are suffering, know in your heart the truth of the words “you are my beloved in whom I am well pleased”. Have you considered joining the Society of St. Vin-cent de Paul? Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor.

Scripture Study

Plan to attend our Lenten Scripture study session, be-ginning Sunday, February 17, 2019. We will explore the book of Revelations. This study invites the modern reader to revisit a volatile period of history through apocalyptic, symbolic writing. En-ter into the struggle between good and evil, hear the call to conversion, and experience God’s ultimate tri-umph. Revelation’s apocalyptic imagery, symbolic colors and numbers are explored. The evils of the Ro-man Empire during a specific period of time persecu-tion are behind much of the apocalyptic imagery. It contains letters to seven churches of Asia Minor (modern Turkey), which urge faithfulness to Christ. Powerful visions of God and the victorious lamb in heaven are unveiled as God and the lamb achieve the ultimate and absolute victory over evil, culminating in a new heaven and a new earth with a new Jerusalem as home to God’s holy people.

There are 8 sessions leading up to Easter. We will begin on Sunday 02/17/19. We meet every Sunday from 10:00 am – Noon. Fee is $10.00 which includes study material. Please contact Chester Gilbert for information at:

Joy in Jesus Sunday Program The preschool children in the "Joy in Jesus" Sunday program celebrated their Baptism with a holy water blessing. They learned the meaning of Advent and waiting for the birthday of Jesus by making an Advent wreath using fresh evergreen branches. The candles were lit for each week of Advent. For Christmas, they made ornaments and decorated a tree. The "Joy in Jesus" program is open to children ages 3 1/2 through kindergarten. Classes are held in the school during the 10:45 am Mass each Sunday. The second half of this year's session began on January 6th. There are several openings in the classes at this time. For information, call Charlotte Lindquist at 847-470-1434. SJB Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children's Liturgy of the Word contin-ues to grow as more children are joining us for this special worship experience. The Liturgy is geared especially for children ages 6-10. It is a special op-portunity for children to understand and appreciate Scripture at Sunday Mass at 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Polish Mass. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry will continue until June of 2019. We welcome all of our children ages 6-10 to participate!

Ministers of Care Needed! Our Ministry of Care group is looking for more people to join us in helping the homebound to be able to re-ceive the Holy Eucharist. We are blessed to have 14 ministers, but we need more. This is a very rewarding ministry. The visits take about 12 to 15 minutes, and consist of short prayers, reading the Gospel, and distributing communion. Our homebound parishioners truly look forward to receiving Jesus. Father Przemek will be offering training sessions beginning in February. Please give this ministry serious thought. If you have questions, please call the parish office at 847-966-8145 and leave a message for me, or return the form below to the office. Thank you, Ann Zalak , Coordinator, Ministry of Care

Starting on the weekend of January 5-6, we are again asking our parish-ioners to participate in this special fund-raiser to help women in crisis pregnancies by supporting the pro-life work of the Catholic-run Wom-en's Centers of Greater Chicago-land. Baby bottles will be found in main entrances of the church for you to take home and fill with spare change. Any checks should be made out directly to The Women's Cen-ters. Over the prior 13 years our parish has already raised over $239,000 which helped to save 240 babies, who are now living out their lives amongst us. Many of them in turn will have children of their own. Con-tinuing in the spirit of Christmas, let our parishioners of all ages, in-cluding the children, work together to save even more little lives. Please return the bottles before any of the masses on the weekend of February 9-10. Please take one bottle per family. Extras will be available in the back of the church the next couple of weekends if you fill up your first one. Thank you for participating in this worthy cause.

A Few Words About Wills More than a mere legal doc-ument that will be accepted in a court of human law, a well-prepared will is a state-ment of faith, hope and love. Family, charities, and others in need will benefit from this, your final; act of ma-terial kindness. St. John Brebeuf Parish would consider it a privilege to be mentioned in your will. Thank you, for not only your consideration but for all your other gift sacrifices.
