VALUED AT $500We had 3 different quotes from 3 different granite companies for granite to be installed in our home. Premium Granite Works was the only company to offer the complete package. They redesigned our kitchen island and supplied the carpenter and the plumber. There was no extra charge for them to remove the old countertops and dispose of them. The installation was perfect and our granite is out of this world. We would refer Premium Granite Works to friends, family and neighbours. Thanks Bill. Ray and Bernice

We dropped in at Premium Granite Works to look at some granite for our home. Bill came over to the house and spent time with us and let us know what his company could do for us. We chose a color and got a great price. The installation went smoothly with no damage when the old countertops were taken out. The installers did a great job and cleaned up after they were nished. We would recommend this company to anyone. Thank you Premium Granite Works.

Canadians are enjoying much longer li ves these days. Of course, an increase in longe vity is great, but it’s even better when combined with a good quality of life. Healthy aging is a goal we should all aim for.

Maintaining your physical and mental wellbeing is vital if you’re a senior. Here are four guidelines for staying active and independent.

A heAlthy dietA healthy diet provides the nourishment necessary for the body to maintain energy

levels and do what it needs to do every day. A healthy diet is the basis of good health for everybody — children, adults, and seniors.

PhysicAl exercisePhysical activity is an important factor in staying healthy. A physically active senior will maintain a healthy weight, feel energetic, and feel less stress. Physical activity also allows you to keep your sense of balance and coordination, which in turn reduces the risk of falls. Stay active by walking, cycling, and swimming; keeping moving is good for morale, too!

OrAl heAlthTeeth, both false and natural, require re gular care, because poor oral health can also affect other areas of the body. Re search has shown that there is a link bet ween poor dental hygiene and certain health problems, such as diabetes and res piratory diseases.

stOP smOkingGiving up tobacco improves quality of life. It is never too late to stop smoking. Take advantage of a life without smoke; you’ll feel better and you’ll re duce your risk of contracting heart di sease or lung cancer.

The challenge of healthy aging

Hand washing is one of those things that we learn as children. It’s a mundane task that we do by rote several times a day. But have you ever asked yourself if you’re washing your hands properly?

Hand washing may appear simple enough, but the fact remains that the ma jority of adults don’t know how to wash their hands correctly — or they don’t take the time to do it. And yet,

hand wa shing is a key factor in preventing the spread of germs and other health problems.

the cOrrect technique fOr wAshing hAnds1. Wash your hands in hot water.2. Use soap.3. Lather the soap all over your hands

(palms, backs of hands, bet ween the fin gers, under the nails).

Do you know how to wash your hands properly?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that originated in China, and it is based on the stimulation of precise points on the body with the help of special needles or other tools. The objective of acupuncture, and the stimulation of these points, is to modify and facilitate the proper circulation of the body’s energy.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture corrects imbalances in the flow of energy (called “Qi”) that circulates throughout the body. Acupuncture stimulates precise points situ ated along me ridians, which are chan nels through which this energy circulates. The meridians run down the en tire length of the human body on both sides. Most acu puncture points are situated along these meridians.

The needles inserted into the surface of the skin stimulate the acu puncture points and regulate the flow of Qi, as well as physiological and emotional functions. The different acupuncture points play a precise role in reestablishing the health of the patient.

Contrary to popular belief, an acu puncture treatment is really quite re laxing, as the needles do not hurt. They are very small and are designed to be inserted easily into only the topmost layer of the skin. Typically, the acupuncturist never uses more than 15 needles, which are left in place for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the condition to be treated. When the needles are inserted, the patient may feel a slight pri cking sensation (like that of a mosquito bite), tingling, numbness, or nothing at all.

Acupuncture is used to treat a variety of im balances in the human body’s systems, in cluding arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, bron chitis, asthma, gallstones, diarrhea, de pression, and stress. It can also help to re lieve various common conditions, such as headaches and colds.

Most people consider acupuncture treatments to be quite relaxing,

as the needles rarely hurt.

Regain your vital energy with acupuncture

4. Continue rubbing for at least 15 seconds or the time it takes to hum Happy Birthday.

5. Rinse your hands un der hot water, while continuing to rub them together.

6. Dry your hands with clean paper to wels or a towel. In pu blic bathrooms, use a paper towel to turn off the tap and open the door on your way out.

Hands Have to be wasHed frequentlyTo protect yourself and your family and friends, you should wash your hands after every sneeze or cough,

after going to the bathroom, before preparing food, after handling raw meat, before and af ter meals, after touching an animal, af ter handling garbage, and after using pu blic transportation.

All the experts tell us that lea ding a healthy life can extend your life expec-tancy and that it’s never too late to get started. If you adopt a more balanced lifestyle right now, your state of health will improve no matter how old you are. Are you ready for the challenge?

First challenge: Improve your chances of success by eating well and exercis-ing more. Every gesture counts when it comes to avoiding illnesses such as diabetes or high cholesterol. Even the risk of cancer, stroke, and heart disease can be reduced with a more balanced diet and daily physical exercise.Second challenge: See your doctor, dentist, ophthalmologist, physiothera-pist, chiropractor, and audiologist on a regular basis, especially in your middle age. In other words, don’t neglect your health just because you don’t see any symptoms.

Third challenge: It helps to keep the brain active and stimulated in keeping at bay depression, dementia, and isola-tion. Take up crossword puzzles, visit museums, or take classes to keep your brain working well. And don’t forget to laugh. Not only is laughing a great way

to reduce stress but it is also an efficient method to reduce blood pressure and improve the immune sys-tem. If you don’t feel like laughing, just pretend. A forced smile will still relax the facial muscles and can help you feel happier.

Good health has no age; it is just as important to take care of yourself at 20 as it is at 40 or 80 years old. If you are willing to make a bit of effort, your ability to live a comfortable and perhaps longer life is very real. If you want to, you can do it!

If you adopt a more balanced lifestyle right now, your state

of health will improve no matter how old you are.

The health triathlon: it’s a start!
