Ihavetworoosters.Thedominantonecouldcarelessifhislesserbrotherstarvestodeath,andworks
activelytowardthatgoal.Ilookathistinyproudheadandrealize–thatroosterjustdoesn’thavethehardwareforempathy.Weontheotherhandarehardwiredforit.
Thepeoplewhomakeusproudtobehumanarethosewhodemonstrateacombinationofstrengthandcompassion,powerandmercy.FromGandhi,MartinLutherKing,MotherTheresa–totheBuddhaandJesus.Ifweareevolvingtowardsanything,itistobemorelikethem.
It’sJanuary!We’vemadeourNewYear’sResolutions.Whydowebother?Let’sfaceit.It’sbecausesomethinghasmadeusunhappy.Somethingaboutourchoices,habits,health,relationships,orwhatever.Somethingisnotgoodenoughanymore.Perhaps,weareactuallyin“aworldofhurting.”Actually,weareinaworldofhurting.Allofus.SoinJanuary,wesetouttochangethings.Whilewearealwayschangingthings,oftenunconsciously,inJanuary,wedoitonpurpose.
Ihadanintenseexperienceinmid-December.Oneofmyguidesisarealpersonwithagreatname–Shivarudrabalayogi.Heisarealyogi–thekindthatspentyearsmeditatingfor15-20hoursaday.Hedidsofor5years;traditionallyitwas12years.Itputsoureffortsintoperspective–atleast
mine.Hesaysthatuntilyoucanholdyourmindstillforonehour,youaren’tmeditating,youare“tryingtomeditate.”Well,that’sme.Inthemorning,I“trytomeditate.”
ButononemorninginDecember,Ijustcried.Therewasnoparticularreasonforit.Nothingtocomplainabout.Nothingtoresolve.ButasIamatruedevoteeoftears,Iletthemflow.Andsomewhereintheprocessitbecameclear,“Thispoolofsufferingisnotyourown.”Thattooktheangstoutofthetears,butnotmyattention.What,infact,wasdrivingthissadness?Afterwatchingitforsometime,somethingelsebecameclear.“Thispoolofsufferingisyourown.”
Iwasaskedtowritealighterarticlethismonth.Somethingupbeat.I’mobviouslyofftoagoodstart!Buthey-it’sJanuary.Whatelseistheretotalkabout?Wehavetofigurethisout.Wherewillwefindhappinessthisnewyear?Whatcanwedo?
Lastmonth’sarticlesummarizedkeypointsofabestsellingbook,Drive,byDanielPink.Wehumansarehappiestandmostproductivewhenwehavefreedom,theopportunitytomastersomething,andmeaning-apurposebeyondourlimitedselfinterests.
Ireadabookrecentlybyanauthorwhohadtheanswertoeverything.Hehadareasonforwhyanythingeverhappenedtoanyofus–anditwasallblackandwhite.Therewasnoroomformysteryorgrace.Itkindofdrovemecrazy.But
therewasonesectionthatstayedwithme.
Whydosomethingkindtosomeone?Reason#1–Forourownprotection.It’sgoodkarma.#2.Empathy.Youcanimaginethatperson’spain.#3.Todiminish“thecollectivepoolofsuffering.”(Obviously,thatthirdreasonhadaprofoundimpactonme.Ihavetogivehimcreditforsettingmeoffonthislight-heartedtrainofthought.)
Withthisnewvisualization,weareallstandingbeside(orinside)thegreatpoolofsuffering,withcupsinhand,andwehavethepowertoscoopupbucketsfromthepool,andpouritonthegarden.Atthesametime,weshrinkthepoolandcreatesomethingbeautifulanduseful.Itwouldn’tmatterwhereweare,orhowlimitedourapparentpower.Oursmallactsofcompassionwouldshrinkthepoolofsufferingeverywhere.
Reason#3givesussomethingtodotokeepusbusyinthisnewyear,aprojecttokeepusoutoftrouble!
Afriendusedtospendlongperiodsoftimeinthehospitalandemergencyroom.Iaskedherhowshemanagedtostaysopositive.“Ipray,”sheanswered.AsshewasaBuddhist,herprayersweremorelikesilent,invisible,mental,goodwillofferings.“Maythatwomanhaveapeacefulnightsleep.”“Letthatmanfindsomeonetocomforthim.”

Isitpossibletotendthepoolofsufferingandnotfallin?Yes.Thetrulygreatamongus,thelikesofMotherTheresaandGandhi,makenoattempttodeludeorescape.Throughtheirattentivecompassion,theirliveshadtremendousmeaning–andimpact.
So,let’sreviewoursituation.We’relookingforNewYear’sEvolution,butwegetdistractedandlosehope.Meaningmakesushappy–butwecan’tfinditwhenweneedit.We’reinanintensetimeofhistory.Withcurrentinstantaneous,communicationcapabilities,we’reallintouch,all6billionofus.It’sworsethanadysfunctionalfamilythatafteryearsofalienationallshowedupforChristmasdinnerwiththeintentionofeveningupthescore,withwords,curses,andantiquesflyingeverywhere,childrenrunningaroundhungry,andthousandsofthefamilyhidingundertheporch.
ThisistheplacewhereNewYear’sResolutionsbecomeNewYear’sEvolution.OurchancesofsuccessaregreaterifweputourNewYear’s
resolutionsintoalarger,moremeaningfulcontext.
Whyisitthatweoftenfinditeasiertodohardthingsforsomeoneelsethantodoitforourselves?Ilivedon4hourssleepanightforamonthwhenmychildwasveryill.Myhusbandcouldn’tquitsmoking–untilhediditforourdaughter.I’msureyouhaveexamples.
Ihavemetmorethanafewpeoplewhohavefoundthecouragetopushthroughthescartissueofpasthardships,abuse,fearsandlossbydoingitalsoforotherswhohavesufferedinthesameway.Withanintentiontohealforapurposegreaterthantheirownpersonalhappiness,they’renotaloneanymore.Thepowerfulforceoflovenowaccompaniesthem.
Itcanbeapaintoquitsmokingordrinkingorvideogames,toupgradeourexerciseandeatinghabits,tohealrelationshipsandspeakoutormorekindly,togetanewjoborgetridofoldstuff.Butinallcases,itiseasiertodoitforagoodreason,forsomeoneelse,orforacausethatmovesourheart.
Thepoolofsufferingmaynotbeourown–butitisourown.Weshrinkifweignoreit;wearenohelpifwedrowninit.Thisisnotbadnews.Badnewsisbadnews,butthatwecanconnectandgainmeaningthroughthebadnews–thatisnotbadnews.Eveninthemidstofconfusionanddarktimes,ifourheartsandhandsareengaged,ourlivesthenhavemeaning–andmeaninggeneratesthehappinesswearelookingfor.

Sometimesthepastcarriesstoriesofunspeakabletragedyandsadness.ThestoryofD’arcyIsland,British
Columbiaanditsturn-of-the-centuryChineseresidentsisonesuchtale.
It’shardtobelievethattoday’sGulfIslandsNationalParkReserveonceencompassedD’ArcyIsland’scommunityoflepers;primarilyChineseimmigrantswhowereexiledtheretoliveouttheirtorturedlivesfarfromthegrowingpopulationofnearbyVancouverIsland.
Despitetheirprotests,theoriginalfiveChinesemendeterminedtohaveleprosywereescortedfromVictoriatotheirnew‘home’onD’ArcyIslandin1891.TheIsland’spopulationebbedandflowedoverthenextfifteenyearsasresidentsdiedoffandmoreofthesickweresenttotheColony.Conditionswerecrudetosaytheleast.Themen
werelefttofendforthemselves.Nomedicaltreamentwasoffered,althoughadoctordidtravelwiththesupplyshipeverythreemonthsforroutinecheck-ups.Itwasanintolerablesituationthatlastedfartoomanyyears.
In1906,theFederalLeprosyActwaspassedanditspolicyofrepatriationfinallyallowedtheresidentstoleavetheColony,andin1907theywerereturnedtoChina.TheLeperColonyonD’ArcyIslandwasstillusedoccasionallyuntil1924,thenclosedforever,leavingatinydotintheSalishSeataintedbytheharshrealityofourhistory.
Inthe1960’s,thefacility’sbuildingswereburnedtothegroundandin1961theIslandbecameaprovincialmarinepark.In2003,itbecamepartoftheGulfIslandsNationalParkReserve.~

Thereislittletoreportthismonthasnotmuchactivityhappensimmediatelyafteranelectionandthingsgetveryquietduringtheholidayseason,astheyshould.
ThenewBoardhasbeenformedandwehavebeengoingthruaformalorientationprocessandhavestartedthereviewofthe2015proposedbudget.
THE STORM: ThestormsofDecemberwereverysignificanteventsthathadseriousconsequencesformanyresidentsoftheRegionalDistrictofNanaimo.
Whilstallofuswereaffectedinsomefashion,Iwastrulyimpressedwiththesimplefactthattherewereveryfewcomplaints.Indeed,itseemedthattheresidentsofAreaHacceptedthestorms’challenges,didwhatwasrequiredand,whenneeded,helpedtheirneighbours.Thisreflectsthepersonalstrengththatcharacterizesourruralculture.Welldoneallofyou!
Ididreceiveafewcallswhenresidents’capacityexceededtheirabilitytorespond.NoneoftheseeventswereadirectRDNresponsibility,but,thecomplexityofjurisdictionsinrural
areasmeansthatitisalmostimpossibleforanyresidenttoknowwhotocallforanyspecificemergency(Igetconfusedaswell)!ThelessonhereisthatitisperfectlyappropriateforyoutocalltheRDNormeonanyissue.Whileyouwillnotfinditinourjobdescription,theRDNandIshould,asaminimum,beputtingyouincontactwiththeappropriateauthority,andbetteryet,advocatingforyouwiththatorganization.
Notingtheabove,ImustcommentontheexcellentsupportthatweallreceivedfromtheRDN,theMinistryofTransportandCanadaCoastGuard.Veryearlyintothestorms,theRDNopeneditsEmergencyOperationsCentreandcommencedcoordinatingourresponse.Essentially,thiscoordinationinvolvedcollectingdataonproblemsandengagingtherightauthoritytorespond.Forexample,whenIexpressedconcernaboutcontinuedfloodingofShorelineRd,theRDNDepartmentHeadactuallywentouttothesitetoconductapersonalassessmentandsubsequentlyengagedMOTIandtheyrespondedimmediatelyandveryeffectively.Forthefirsttime,theRDNalsousedFacebooktodescribe,“realtime”whatwasgoingon.Ithoughtthatwasanoutstandingwayofgettingthewordout.YoudonotneedaFacebookaccounttoviewtheRDN’sFacebookpageand

ithasbeendonebefore,gettingShawequipmentontoTelus-ownedpolesmaybeoutofthequestion.
TherewaslotsofdiscussionabouthowthelackofHigh-Speedinternethasaffectedthecommunity.ShawwouldliketoconnectSpiderLakebutit’sasimplecaseofmath.Unfortunately,thereisnotenoughpopulationintheareatowarrantthehighcost.
OurnextstepistoreplicatethismeetingwithTelus,astheyowntheinfrastructurealreadyinplace.Atthispoint,RDNStaffaretryingtosetupameetingwithTelus,butIdon’texpectonetobescheduledbeforetheNewYear.

topurchaseaPatientChairforuseduringChemotherapytreatments.Treatmentsareusuallygivenintravenouslyandcanlastaslongasfivehourspersessioneveryweekorso.Itisveryimportantthentohaveaspecialchairthatcanfolddowntoabedsothepatientcanrestwhilethetreatmentisadministered.ThesechairsareextremelyexpensiveandwhentheQualicumBayLionsaskedtheFoundationforawishlist,thePatientChairwasahighpriority.ManypeoplefromLighthouseCountry(QualicumBay,Bowser,DeepBay,Spider&HorneLake)taketheirtreatmentsatSt.Joseph’sHospitalbecauseitisconvenienttothearea.TheintentionoftheQualicumBayLionsClubistobenefiteveryonewhogoestoSt.Joseph’sfortreatment.
