Optimism May Improve Your Health And Suc-

cess

(StatePoint) People don’t often think about

how optimism impacts their lifestyle, career

and relationships. But a positive attitude can

help you avoid stressful situations, maintain

better health, and may even allow you to heal

more quickly when you aren’t feeling well,

according to some experts.

“Optimism and the desire to be successful are

the basis for a person’s happiness and good

health,” asserts Elena Korneeva, a psycho-

physiologist and author of the new book

“Breath of Life.”

As a specialist, Korneeva promotes a happier,

healthier life with these guiding principles:

• Joyful inspired and outspoken people make

great company. These traits will attract people

to you in both professional and personal set-

tings.

• Laugh. People with a good sense of humor are

the life of any party, at any age and in any so-

cial stratum.

• One who can sincerely laugh at his or her own

mistakes can overcome most difficulties. A

sense of humor is a trait of a harmonious per-

son.

• Make an effort to truly understand and empa-

thize with your conversation partners.

• Don’t be afraid of situations that haven’t even

happened yet. By avoiding fear of the un-

known, you can better focus on a positive solu-

tion, rather than the problem.

• Optimism and humor will make you a better parent. With these tools, your children will bring you joy rather than try your patience.

Positive and creative parenting yields positive and creative children.

• An integral part of success is a healthy lifestyle, absent of bad habits. Eat varied, small meals four-to-five times a day, get sound

sleep, and take part in sports and leisure activities you love.

• There are no boundaries or limits to your pursuit of self-perfection. Success is often very close at hand, but by emphasizing diffi-

culties in our lives, we neglect to focus on our strengths.

“With optimism we fill our life with new meaning, and it helps us find a way out of a circle of troubles,” says Korneeva. “The key to

happiness is in our hands.”

Picture this, you wake up in the morning, get into your

vehicle and drive to a store. You park your vehicle, get out of the

car, and go into the store. As you finish purchasing your items and are walking out to your vehicle, you notice

that there is a large dent or ding in your car. Fear not! Slim-N-Hanks can easily repair your vehicle. This auto

body shop is locally and family owned, has years of experience, and a knowledgeable and friendly staff who is

willing and waiting to help with all of your auto-body needs.

In 1962, Ludger “Slim” Thuente and Henry “Hank” Pendergraft opened Slim-N-Hanks auto-body shop

in Sterling Illinois. Their objective was to provide quality collision repair for local vehicle owners. Today,

Ross Thuente (son of “Slim” Thuente) is the current owner of Slim-N-Hanks. As things have changed from

1962, Ross has upgraded equipment and has brought the business into a more modern day auto-body repair

shop, but still has the same objectives as his father; customer satisfaction and quality services. Ross states “if

there is an issue with a service, we will be sure to correct the problem”. Owning not just one location, but two,

he has remained firm in his belief about customer satisfaction.

Both locations offer top of line paintwork, unibody framework, body work, 24hr towing services, auto

glass repair and replacement, vehicle rentals, and paint-less dent repair. Sterling location offers suspension

alignment, while Dixon offers detailing services. With a reliable and knowledgeable staff, Thuente continues

to perform top quality repair work for the Dixon and Sterling community.

¥ Here's a great conversation piece: Get a big, shallow bowl or box, fill it with loose snapshots (preferably of holidays past) and set it on your coffee table. Peo-ple can't resist photos.

¥ "I've loved this little trick since I saw it used at a party years ago. I serve iced tea (or punch) at most of my get-togethers, and instead of ice cubes, I freeze several pounds of cleaned, de-stemmed white grapes. They are a hit at every party." -- M.A. in New York

¥ Need almost-instant party snacks? Try a package of store-bought cheese tortel-lini. Cook according to package instruc-tions (usually only a few minutes), toss with oil or salad dressing and stick each on a toothpick.

¥ "A great way to make guests comfort-able is to print out a copy of the channel lineup for your cable service provider. You also can print out common remote-control buttons or any remote-control or TV instructions for playing a DVD, etc. This helps us older folks enjoy a few hours of TV time while the younger kids are out at work or school." -- H.P. in Ne-braska

¥ If you're serving hot rolls on a buffet, line the basket with aluminum foil before you line it with a towel. They'll stay warm longer that way.

¥ Try this tip to avoid overeating at holi-day parties: Keep a drink in your domi-nant hand. You'll be less likely to graze on high-fat chips and other snack foods. Need a little something? Hope for a veg-gie platter. But whether it's veggies or chips, grab a couple and then WALK AWAY from the table before you can hit the dip.

Long before my feet touched Iraqi soil—before I even joined the United States Ma-rine Corps—I was a veteran of a long war for survival.

My first foe was my father, who was horribly abusive to my mother and me. When he finally left, a new enemy surprised me: my mother’s demons. I was 13 when my mother’s mental illness drove her to lock me in a back bedroom of our house—without food or water. By the time the police broke in a week later, I was literally starving. When I got out of the hospital I had a new status: foster kid.

During my five years in foster care I had more than a dozen social workers. Nearly every court date meant meeting a new law-yer. But through it all I had just one CASA volunteer: Sally Payne.

Throughout all the changes and different people I had to deal with, Sally was the one person who was there just for me. Knowing Sally cared about me meant the world to me. She was the anchor I desperately needed to stay in school, to keep moving forward, to make the choices that got me safely out of foster care and into service to my country. She made me believe that I was destined for success—in college or in what-ever else I decided to do.

“Whatever else” turned out to be joining the Marines—which I did as soon as I turned 18 without consulting Sally or anyone else. You see, while I was in foster care, my mom died—homeless and alone. I worried that I might be biologically programmed for a simi-lar fate. The United States Marine Corps

promised a roof over my head, job training and security. Sally wasn’t thrilled with my decision, but she trusted me to make my own choices and she supported me.

I was a Marine from 2000 to 2005, and I served two missions in Iraq. Today I am 27 and a civilian police officer at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. I am also a college student, studying psychology. Sally’s lessons have never left me, and neither has Sally. She will be in my life forever. I am living proof that CASA volunteers change kids’ lives.

EenyMeenyMinyMoe Parties are such great fun, especially when they are for children. . . . by Gaylene

My daughter recently asked for ideas and help with a birthday party. However the party date was during a busy week so we needed to do something easy yet fun. My suggestion was a “Hungry Caterpillar” theme based on the book by Eric Carle. I knew we could come up with some great party foods . . . and we did!

My favorite was the “Hungry Caterpillar” made from colorful rainbow cupcakes which made a fun and colorful dessert that doubled as our table centerpiece!

In addition to the cupcakes we served lime sherbet punch, ribbon jello, and apples, pears, strawberries, cheese and sausage with holes poked in them as if the caterpillar had eaten through them. Fun finger foods the kids enjoyed. For take-home treats we filled clear bags with gummi caterpillars and butterflies.

To make this delightful character mix up a white cake batter and divide it evenly into six bowls. Using food coloring make each bowl a different color and then spoon some of each color into the cupcake papers. You will also need to make a 6” round cake for the head. Bake and cool. Frost the cupcakes with a two-tone green frosting and the head with red frosting. Arrange the cupcakes in the shape of a caterpillar and use assorted candies to make the feet, hair, eyes, nose, and antenna.

To see photos and learn more about the fun desserts and candy buffets we can provide for you visit emmmoe.com or email [email protected]
