Me?Isleptinacomfortablebed,butonOctober15thIsleptinParksville’sCommunityPark!Oh,IknowthereisnoovernightstayspermittedintheparkandIknowitwasthemiddle

ofOctoberbutthereIwashunkereddowninmysleepingbagbeneaththepicnicshelter.DidIactuallysleep?NotverywellbutIwasn’ttheretosleeporatleast,Ididn’texpecttosleepwell.Yousee,Iwastherealongwitheightotherpeopleforagreatcause.ThatweekwasHomelessnessAwarenessWeekandaspartoftheOceansideHomelessnessTaskForce,IparticipatedintheSleep Outside ChallengetoraiseawarenessofthehomelesssituationinParksville,QualicumBeachandarea–VancouverIsland’sOceansideRegion.

Manypeoplemightthinkwedon’thaveahomelessissueinourregionbecausetheydon’tseemanyhomelesspeoplearound,butwedo.Ourwarmclimate,naturalsurroundingsandmanyservicesmakethisareasomewhatofanattraction.

Peoplewhohavenoplacetocallhomedon’tusuallychoosetolivethatway.Theyarewithoutahomeformanyreasons,butwhateverthosereasonsare,afterspendingthenightsleepingoutsideI’mcertainthatdoingitbychoiceisnotoneofthem.

AsIpreparedformynightoutinthewilds,Iwasalittlefearful.WhatifIgotcoldandwet?WhatifIhadtogotothebathroom?Whatifaferociousraccoondecidedtochomponmeoraratranacrossmyface?Thesefearsdictatedmypacking…down-filledsleepingbagandjacket,tarp,woolblanket,woolsocks,toiletpaperandfacialmask.

IalsopackedsomeitemsthatIwouldtypicallypackforanightaway–toothbrush,toothpaste,faceclothandhandcream(Ican’tgotobedwithoutmoisturizingmyhands!)buttherewasnoplacetousetheseitems…exceptthehandcream.IlaughedatmyselfasIputthecreamonmyhands.Itdawnedonmethatwhenyou’recold,wet,hungry,scaredandalone,softhandsareprobablynotaconcern!

Ourinstructionsweresimple;packeverythingyou’regoingtoneedintoagarbagebagbutnotent.Thisalsomeantnocooler,cookstove,lawnchairorheater.Thiswasgoingtobenocampingtrip;thiswasallaboutsurvival.Ahomelesspersonmustbeabletocarryalltheirbelongingsontheirbackandevenmyonegarbagebagwasheavyenough.Granted,somehomelessfolksdoliveintheircarsandyes,thatwasmyPlanBifthenightgottooroughtohandle.

Butthenightdidnotgettooroughtohandle.Inmyeffortstotryandthinkwhatahomelesspersonmightneedandpossiblybeabletoacquiretokeepreasonablycomfortable,Ihitthedollarstore.Ayogamatandblowuppooltoybecamemymattress.Theycostacoupleofdollarsandwereeasytotransport.Moreover,theywerewaterproofandprovidedsomelevelofcushioningformypooroldbackandhips–whichbytheway,stillsufferedterribly!AnoldquiltontopofthoseandIhadacomfyfirstlevel.

Inmid-October,attheemptyrodeogrounds,itappearedthatmydogwasgoingpoop.SoIwent

overtowardsashedtocleanupherdroppings,butallIcouldfindwere$20bills.Threeofthemonthegrass.Doesmydognowpoopout$20bills?IsshethenewGoldenGooselayinggoldeneggs?

(Youknowthefairytale.TheGoldenGooselaidgoldeneggs,butagreedymancutthemagicalgooseopentogetalltheoileggsatonce.ForgivetheFreudianslipbutweknowthesadending,beitgoldeneggsoroil.)

Inthesametwoweeks,Ihadtwootherpersonalencounterswithsomeoneelse’smoney.Awalletwithoverahundreddollarsshowedupinthedarkoutsidetheswimmingpool.Acoupleofdayslater,whenanATMmachinewouldn’tacceptmycard,Irealizedthatthepreviousperson’ssessionhadnotended.ThemachineaskedmeifIwantedtowithdrawcash-onsomeoneelse’sbankcard.

Well,Ifoundtherightfulownersofthewallet,cashandcard.Andthenexttimemydogpooped,itwasnot$20bills.Darn.

Inmypast,IoncehadmytotallyintactpursereturnedtomebyaMexicanimmigrantwhoworkedatthedrycleaners,spokenoEnglishandwas

probablydirtpoor.Ialsohadmychequebookreturnedtomebythejanitorata7thDayAdventistChurch.Thesetwostrangersprotectedmefromharm,andI’mgrateful.

Thesetemptationsarerathersimpleones.TheGoldenRule,whichweknowas“Dountoothersasyouwouldhavethemdountilyou,”hadvariationsinancientGreeceandEasternReligions.It’sasolidmoralfoundationolderthantime.

Butsometimesit’snoteasytoknowwhatisright.That’swhyIadmirethefollowingthreeordinaryhumanheroes.

It’snotjusttheyoungandfed-upwhoareweighingthebenefitsof‘livingtiny’.Ihaveafriendinhersixtieswhoiswithinahairofsellinghermid-sizedhomeandpropertytoenjoythefreedomthatatinyhomeaffords.She’dliketoliveamoresimplelifeandleaveasofterfootprintontheearth.Livingonlywiththethingssheneedstomakelifecomfortable.Itmakessense.

Livinginatinyspaceisnotasillyfadthat’sinit’sfreshandshinyphase.‘Liv-ingtiny’isheretostayandtheconceptisstartingtowearacomfortablepatinaasthecrazeagesintoasolidandsmartlifestylechoice.
