When Brice and Jennifer Morano of Gibson, City, Ill., learned they were expecting their first child, they were ecstatic and looked forward to the happy event.
A sonogram taken 20 weeks into the pregnancy, however, was abnormal, and their physician said a few words no parent wants to hear: “I hate to be the bearer of bad news.”
The sonogram indicated the baby could possibly have several difficulties, including a cleft lip and palate.
“We didn’t know how it would turn out. Though we were scared of the prognosis we prayed and kept hope,” said Jennifer, who delivered Kyra on September 8, 2009, in Champaign, Ill. “When she was born, I’ll never forget the relief Brice and I felt after hearing her cry for the first time. We knew everything was going to be alright.” Despite the worrisome prognosis, the only problem Kyra was born with was an incomplete cleft of the left side of her lip and left gum.
Finding Treatment for KyraBrice and Jennifer began to look into treatment options for their daughter, and ultimately applied to Shriners Hospitals for Children® —Chicago. The Morano family first visited the hospital in December 2009. At that time, the cleft lip and palate team provided a clearly outlined treatment plan to the parents.
Kyra’s first surgery, which took place in January 2010, closed her cleft lip, and placed ear tubes.
“The nurses did a great job of caring for Kyra and her recovery was very good. We were taught to use a syringe to feed her for the two weeks following surgery, and then went back to a bottle,” said Jennifer.
Making the Best ChoiceToday, Kyra is an alert, happy, playful girl who loves to interact with other kids. In her free time, Jennifer takes her daughter to their local nursing home to visit the patients. “The residents’ faces light up when they see her,” said Jennifer.
During a visit to Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago, Jennifer met Mollie Carlson, a cleft lip and palate patient who serves as a hospital ambassador, speaking to hundreds of people all across the country about her experience at the hospital. Mollie spent a few minutes sharing her own story, which was very helpful to the Moranos.
“It is so encouraging meeting other families and patients who have been through the same things. The care at Shriners Hospitals for Children® is over the top – it was the best choice that my husband and I have made for our daughter,” said Jennifer.
