NEW TEMPLE UPDATE

Land Progress

In response to our request, the Beltsville Civic Association and Prince George’s County Planning Board approved our request in May to cancel their future plan of building Pine Street between the two parcels of land (4231and 4241 Ammendale Road, Beltsville, Maryland) purchased by us for the new Jain Center, and give us the ownership of the strip of the land owned by the county for building the Pine Street. The County has complied with our request with a condition that we do not build any permanent structure on that strip of land. With the addition of that strip of land, the Jain Society now has 5.4 acres of land.

Next Steps

- Final Review of Request for Proposal (RFP) for General Architect and Sompura - Selection of Architect and Sompura - Conceptual and Detailed designs from Architect and Sompura - Approval of Design by Jain Society General Body and Prince Georges’ County - Selection of Contractor for construction of new Jain Center (planned for March 2015) - Construction of the new Jain Center

Next Events:

- Bhoomi Poojan and Khanan Vidhi (planned for April- May 2014) - Sheela Ropan (planned for April 2015) - Pratishta Mahotsav (planned for August 2016)

JAINA UPDATE

JAINA Convention 2013 held in Detroit during July 4-7 was very successful and attended by over 3700 participants from all over the world.

The joyous and eventful seventeenth biennial JAINA (JAINA: Federation of JAIN Associations in North America) Convention celebrations concluded in Novi, a beautiful Northwest suburb of Detroit, Michigan, with huge success. The theme of the convention was JAINISM: THE GLOBAL IMPACT. Jainism has significant lasting effects on the global population in the areas of religion, commerce, education, culture, language, and cuisine.

The convention celebrations which took place over four days brought together a host of Jain religious leaders, scholars, followers and dignitaries who participated in a comprehensive series of events focusing on the theme: JAINISM: The Global Impact. The cumulative reach of these events is extensive, with more than eighty speakers and an audience of approximately three thousand five hundred attendees.

During the convention JAINA also launched the Upliftment program - Uplift a Jain child or family from poverty through education. Since its inception, JAINA has supported disaster relief projects around the globe. We now want to extend our services to a sustainable livelihood project. Under the JAINA Upliftment Program, poor Jain children and families in India will receive quality education (for children), higher or vocational training (for young adults), and skill enhancement vocational training (for heads of households) to increase their earning potential. This will result in sustainable livelihoods to liberate them from poverty.

$20 per month or $240 yearly will pay for a child's education

$50 a month or $600 yearly will assist a young adult with higher education

Contact Sushil Jain @ 240-277-3039 or Bhupesh Mehta @ 240-455-4524 or email at [email protected] for more details.
