Hi Everybody
Ons werk so bietjie voortydig aan hierdie nuusrief. Terwyl ek skryf is ek ook besig om te pak. Ons gaan vir my dogter in Londen kuier. Maar die nuusbrief moet klaar wees voordat ons almal met vakansie gaan. In hindsight 2012 was a busy, but very exciting year. Thank you to each member for your contribution. And here’s wishing you a happy 2013 to one and all!
I hope that everyone had a great holiday and is enthusiastically ready for the year ahead. Let’s participate in projects and make it an eventful and productive year. I would like to extend a special welcome to all our new committee members. Thank you for volunteering to serve the Guild. The first meeting of the year will take place on 9 February 2013 at the new venue namely
The Central Baptist Church, 827 Schoeman Street, Arcadia. The theme for our first meeting will be “My Quilting Journey”. Our guest speaker will be Trienie Krugel from Sasolburg. Trienie is a quilt judge, teacher and very experienced quilter, and she has had a very interesting quilting journey. Her quilts are beautiful, so do not miss the opportunity to be inspired by her. Bring your first and last quilts for Show and Tell and remember that there is a special prize for Show and Tell. Fabric Postcards will be demonstrated so come and learn a new technique. During 2012 mugs were made on which the Jacaranda logo was printed. These mugs are for sale at a cost of R20,00 each. If however, you want to hire a mug for the meeting, you can do so for R20,00 and on returning the mug you will be refunded R15,00. I am sure these mugs will become collector’s items. Natuurlik is 2013 ook Feesjaar. Die Nasionale Kwiltfees met die tema Kaleidoskoop word hierdie jaar in Bloemfontein gehou van 1 – 7 Julie. Jakarandakwilters – kom ons wys vir Suid-Afrika wat hier in Pretoria gedoen word! Skryf sommer BAIE kwilts in. Die feesprogramme sal by die vergadering beskikbaar wees, maak dus seker dat jy joune kry. Dan is daar ook nog die IQC Africa wat van 6 – 8 September by Emperor’s Palace gehou gaan word. I am sure we are going to have much fun together and I look forward to seeing you all on the 9th February.

The SAQG represents all quilters who belong to guilds in South Africa and there are always exciting things on the horizon!
SA Quilt book Lapa Publishers are working on a quilt related book in conjunction with SAQG. Quilt artists in all the regions have been asked to create blocks that depict 15 South African heritage quilts that were chosen to be featured. The proposed date for publication is early next year. This is sure to be a lovely coffee table/practical book which every South African quilter would like to own! We will let you know when the launch of this book will be.
Quilt teachers directory SAQG maintains a directory of quilt teachers. Until a national accreditation programme is available, quilt teachers need not be accredited as yet, but the guilds are asked to forward names of teachers, whom they feel are good teachers. If anyone who teaches has not yet been approached by our local teachers liaison, Almarie, please contact her directly to have your name added to the list.
Individual membership of SAQG Individual members who do not belong to a guild may now apply for SAQG membership. Applications forms are available on the SAQG website.
European Patchwork meeting SAQG has been invited to take a representative collection of South African quilts to France in 2013.The dates for this meeting are 12 – 15 September 2013. We have been asked to collect 45 wall hangings, print brochures, get the quilts to France, hang the quilts and man the exhibition for four days. This exhibition takes place in four towns in close proximity of each other and get over 15 000 visitors per year! Details will soon become available regarding the selection of the quilts. The President of SAQG, Elsa Brits wants to encourage a large number of SA quilters to accompany the quilts to the European Patchwork Meeting. They need as many hands as they can get, so anybody who is not sure where they want to go to next year September, please consider a few days in France so that you can attend the meeting.
Travelling exhibition The 2011/12 travelling exhibition has ended in Bloemfontein and plans are already in place for the next one. As from next year the format will change: Quilts that may become part of the exhibition will be selected from quilts that are entered in the NQF 2013 in Bloemfontein. All participants will be asked whether they would consider allowing their quilts to form part of the travelling exhibition and those that agree will then see their quilts travel around the country. We will provisionally host he travelling exhibition during March 2014 at our favourite venue, the Centurion Art Gallery.
IQCA 2013 The members who attended the first IQCA at Emperor’s palace at the end of July this year can report that it was a great success. The next one will take place from 6 -8 September next year, at the same venue. The main attraction will be the celebrated singing quilter, Ricky Tims. Members will again be asked to assist in some way or another, so we will ask you closer to the time to make yourself available to do some task during the convention.
IQCA 2013 challenge Remember the IQCA Quilt Challenge for next year! The theme is: Freedom to Express. Closing date for entries is 2 April 2013. (http://www.iqcafrica.com/page/challenge ). Last year was a good year as far as membership is concerned. At present we have 280 paid-up members as well as 27 Junior members. 45 new members joined us in 2012 and we welcome them and hope that they will enjoy being part of our Guild for a long time.
It is time to remind you of your subscriptions for 2013. GOOD NEWS! Subscription fees remain the same:

Junior Members - R5 for the year. The Visitors’ fee will, however, be increased to R50 per meeting. We would appreciate it if you could place your subscriptions in an envelope marked with your name and hand them in at the next Friendship Gathering on 9th February 2013.

~Meet Tina du Plooy~
I was born and raised in Pretoria and attended Pretoria
High School for Girls, and the University of Pretoria.
After discovering my Swiss grandmother’s lace bobbins
and antique lace making pillow, I learnt to make bobbin
lace. At that time we were living in Johannesburg. I
thought that bobbin lace making was the ultimate hobby …..
We moved back to Pretoria in 2001. I had been out of the social swing of things for
over ten years so when I discovered a shop in Waterkloof which offered a quilting
class for beginners, I signed up. All the quilting bugs bit me! My first quilt was a
foundation pieced wall hanging. I enjoyed the fabric, the colours, and the accuracy
of this technique, the new world that had opened up to me, and made new friends.
Since then, my stash has grown, my book collection has grown, I have travelled to
far-away places for anything quilt related, and most importantly, met many
wonderful people. I consider myself a traditional quilter but admire all the talented
art quilters out there.
I look forward to my time on the JQG Committee.

Neem ‘n half dosyn kwilters, gooi hulle op ‘n Dinsdagoggend bymekaar en jy het die Dosie-kwilters wat uit die vier windrigtings van Pretoria kom. Ons laat alle sorge, probleme, mans, kinders en diere tuis, sit lekker saam met ons lappies, naald en garing en kwilt en kwilt en praat en praat….. Ons maak elke jaar tenminste een groot kwilt plus kleiner artikels soos tafeldoeke en Kersfees “goeters”. Ons ruil lappies en patrone uit en raak nooit uitgekuier nie. Ons het dames met baie kennis, so daar is geen patroon wat ons baas raak nie. Verder het ons twee kranige fotograwe, so alles wat ons doen is in albums vasgelê. Ons glo niks is te groot, of te klein, of te moeilik nie. Ons is vir die afgelope agt jaar bymekaar. Is ons dalk een van die oudste Huisgroepe?

P’s AND Q’s – LYNNWOOD RIDGE
P’s & Q’s started 1992 with 4 members Pam Simson, Jean McKechnie, Anne Brown and Jill
Viviers.
Today, 20 years later, we are a group of twelve ladies that meet twice a month.
Over the years we have gained and lost many members. We have entered group quilts in
various competitions, attended festivals and won awards. We have done our fair share of
charity quilts and last year one of our quilts was auctioned off for Rotary and raised over
R5000.
At the moment we are busy with blocks using the bandana’s fabric that was specially made in
aid of cancer.
Gwen Heathfield, one of our founder members spent many years on the Jacaranda Committee,
first as Chairlady and then other positions – she was a good teacher and inspired our group
with paper piecing.
Lorraine Gordon has been a member of P’s & Q’s for 12 years and served on the Jacaranda
Committee as PRO, Chairlady and now the Historian.
Our members have attended festivals, courses and a variety of classes and were even stuck in
the snow in Harrismith in 1996 for two nights en route to the Durban Festival.
We have enjoyed quilting over the years and are delighted that JQG has grown and become so
popular attracting many new members.

Machine Quilting tips….
by Claire Wallace In the last newsletter, I gave you some basic tips to consider when choosing backing fabrics for your quilts. I hope you found them useful! This time, I thought it would be interesting to look more closely at the multitude of threads available these days. As with most things, you pay for what you get. There are many reputable thread manufacturers that make thread specifically for quilting. It is designed to withstand the speed, heat, multiple sewing directions and wear required for quilts and it is well worth spending a little more to get a quality product. The type of thread you choose will depend on the type of quilter you are (traditional or more contemporary/modern) and the effect you want the quilting to have (stand out or blend in). Personally, I love the way quilting and thread can bring a quilt top to life so I love thread with a sheen, bright colours and variegated threads. However, if you are a very traditional quilter, you will want a matt thread that will blend perfectly with the fabric. So let’s consider the most popular threads available and look at their advantages and disadvantages… 100% cotton The only choice for quilting “purists”, these threads come in a huge variety of weights, colours and plies. They can be softer threads; more prone to breaking and more ‘linty’ depending on the quality you buy. Long Staple Egyptian Cotton is considered the ‘Rolls Royce’ of thread and demands a huge price but beware of labeling and make sure you really are getting what the label states! To sew with cotton thread, you will most likely need to loosen both your top and bobbin tension quite a bit to get perfect stitches. Cotton thread can become brittle in our dry climate so keeping it in the freezer overnight before using it can help to rehydrate it and prevent breakage. 100% cotton would be my only choice for piecing as it will not be affected by the heat of an iron when pressing your blocks. Cotton Wrapped Polyester This thread has a strong core but the outer cotton quality can vary considerably from smooth to very linty. It is dull in appearance and looks more like a 100% cotton thread. 100% Polyester threads Contrary to popular belief, polyester thread will not cut your quilt top. Advances in thread technology over the years have made these threads very smooth so they will not ‘saw’ through the cotton thread of the fabric as they might have in the past. They come in hundreds of colours, are strong and generally have a lovely (in my opinion) shine to them. You can even choose a colour that will look like it is metallic thread but be much easier to work with. Polyester threads also work well with pre-wound bobbins which is a real time saver if you are working on a big project. They are hard wearing so very good for quilts that will receive a lot of washing but you do need to be careful with stops and starts as the smooth thread is more difficult to knot securely.

Rayon Rayon thread has been used mainly by the machine embroidery industry. They tend to be quite fine threads and may break more often. They are great for thread painting and embroidery effects within a quilt but I would avoid using them for heavy quilting. I have heard it said that Rayon is not always colour fast but I don’t have hard evidence to back up this statement. Metallic There are many different metallic threads available on the market and they are renowned as ‘fussy’ threads. Here more than ever, it is worth buying a good quality, soft not wiry, thread! Use a larger needle (has a larger groove down the front which will protect the thread as it passes through the fabric layers), reduce the tension and slow down when quilting. Use a lightweight thread in the bobbin, not cotton as it will grab the metallic thread and increase breakages.
Invisible Monofilament This thread comes in clear, for light coloured fabrics, and smoky for darker fabrics. There are also nylon and polyester varieties. The nylon may appear finer but may melt in heat and goes yellowish over time. The Polyester variety appears slightly thicker but holds up to heat better and does not get brittle. It is a good choice if your fabric colours on the quilt top make it difficult to choose a colour of thread that will look good on all sections of the piecing. It is an incredibly fine thread (0.004 inch in diameter) but is very forgiving especially for new quilters who are afraid of imperfections showing up. It is perfect for going around appliqué and stitching in the ditch. You can also use it in the bobbin with fussy threads. Reduce the top tension so the fussy thread is under less strain and the invisible thread will not show if it gets pulled to the top (great for metallic threads!) If using it in the bobbin, you should only wind the bobbin half full and you will need to reduce the tension considerably. It is really important to remember that domestic sewing machine tension is set to work on a generic thread for garment construction. As quilters we put greater demands on our machines by changing the thread type and thickness, as well as direction of sewing and thickness of layers. All these factors have an effect on tension so to believe that one factory set tension will work for quilting is unreasonable. In my quilting, I change both top and bobbin tension many times every day to get the perfect stitch for each quilt. Don’t be afraid to play with your tension. If you are nervous, invest in a second bobbin case that you can adjust away from the factory setting…you won’t regret it! If you are anything like me, perhaps one day your thread stash will be bigger than your fabric stash! Happy quilting!

Competition Categories:
1. Traditional Quilts (Large and Small): Quilts that are constructed using both traditional techniques and materials, but are not the entrants own original design. Quilts started in a class where the pattern was supplied are allowed. Replica quilts are allowed. Quilts made from a kit are NOT allowed.
2. Contemporary Quilts (Small, Large and Masters): Quilts that are constructed using traditional techniques and traditional materials, but are the entrant’s own original design. Quilts started in a class where the pattern was supplied are NOT allowed.
3. Freestyle Quilts (Small, Large and Masters): Formerly Art quilts. Quilts which incorporate non- traditional techniques and/or non traditional materials as well as make use of any traditional techniques and/or materials. There must be 3 layers on at least 25% of the visible surface of the quilt. It must be the entrant’s own original design. Cannot be from a pattern or kit or have been started in a class where a pattern was supplied.
4. Collaborative Quilts Made by two (2) people. Any techniques and materials may be used. Entry form must state whether it is an original design or provide details of design source.
5. Group Quilts Made by a group of 3 or more people. Any techniques and materials may be used.
6. Miniature Quilts Must be in scaled–down proportion to a regular sized quilt. Any techniques or materials may be used.
7. Under 16 years of age Quilt maker must be 16 years or younger. Any techniques may be used.
8. Theme “Kaleidoscope” 9. Outreach – Quilts made by those in Outreach/Share & Care programmes. Any
techniques and materials may be used. Must be entirely the work of the person or persons stated on the entry form.
10. 3-Dimensional Items – Includes wearable art (clothing), bags, soft sculpture and other 3-dimensional items. Any item that can be hung from a hook, draped over a hanger or is free-standing on a horizontal surface may be entered in this category. There must be 3 layers on at least 25% of the visible portion of the item.

RULES OF THE COMPETITION
All entries must be in pristine condition. All entries must consist of three (3) layers and must be quilted or use relevant
methods such as Crazy patchwork, Cathedral windows and Mola, with the exception of freestyle and 3-D item entries (see category definitions for their quilting requirements).
All entries must be the work of only one person, except for entries in Collaborative quilts and Group quilts categories. All work must be solely the work of the individual or group stated as the Maker(s) on the entry form.
NO payment may be made for any work whatsoever on any entry, either before or after the competition.
Comprehensive design credits and inspiration must be given, where applicable. When inspired by a photograph, picture or painting, a photocopy of your inspiration MUST accompany the entry.
Quilts previously entered in a national quilt competition in South Africa are excluded. A maximum of 4 entries per person is allowed, excluding the Challenge competition
or other specialty exhibitions. No quilt may be entered into more than one category. The category choice is the sole
responsibility of the entrant. Quilts with heavy embellishments, rigid frames, mountings or special devices of any
kind, will not be allowed. All quilts must be able to be hung from a 10cm cloth sleeve sewn to the top back of
the quilt, 2cm short of either side, except for 3-D Items (see category definition). All quilts must have a cloth label, with the following information on it:
Quilt Category and Entry Number, Quilt Title, Quilt Maker’s Name, Address and Phone Number and the Date the quilt was made.
This label must be securely sewn to the back of the quilt, placed on the lower left-hand corner (viewed from the back). The label must have a piece of dark cloth tacked over all information except the Category, Entry Number and the Quilt title. If the name of the quilt maker appears on the front of the quilt, this must be covered by a piece of dark fabric.
Although the greatest care will be taken with all entries, the quilts are exhibited entirely at the risk of the owner. Please arrange your own insurance.
The judges’ decision is final and NO queries or correspondence pertaining to the judging will be considered.
The National Quilt Festival committee reserves the right to photograph any work for publicity purposes, acknowledging the quilt maker.
The organizers reserve the right to reject any quilt that they feel is inappropriate, offensive or of a standard unacceptable to be exhibited at a South African National Festival.

Sy het dit meer as 50 jaar gelede uit die Landbou weekblad
gekry en maak dit gereëld vir my wanneer ek verjaar!
Maak ‘n tert basis van beskuitjie krummels en botter.
(Ek gebruik graag Digestive beskuitjies en my tannie gebruik Marie beskuitjies)
Dreineer die sap van ‘n groot blik appelkose en gooi in ‘n bak.
Klits met ‘n elektriese klitser totdat dit in klein stukkies is.
Voeg nou twee eiergele by en klits verder.
Wanneer goed gemeng, gooi ‘n halwe blikkie kondensmelk by en klits.
Gooi in voorbereide tert bak en bak teen 180 grade vir ongeveer 20 tot 30 minute
Laat afkoel en bedien met geklitste room.

After the National Quilt Festival in 2011, another Tri-Nations Challenge was
launched. This time it was between Korea, South Africa and Japan.
Some world heritage sites were identified and participants had to interpret the
chosen site. Each site was interpreted by a quilter from each country, resulting in
three quilts for each site.
Marianne Niemandt and Ina Meyer from the Jacaranda Guild were asked to take
part in the challenge.
Marianne had to interpret
the Haeinsa Temple in Korea and
Ina had to do the Changdeokgung Palace
also in Korea.
The quilts had to be 50cm x 50cm in size and any method or technique could be
used.
These quilts were then exhibited in Korea and Japan and they are now on
exhibition in different centres in South Africa.
