Jacaranda - Handmade, Natural, Textural, Contemporary, Traditional, Flexible, Ethical...

Jacaranda’s mission is to create carpets and rugs of real character, using whenever

possible, natural materials and traditional methods. We take pride in being innovative and

different. We aim to provide beautiful floorcoverings using ethical and environmentally

sound production practices, without compromising on quality, design or style.

Jacaranda offers carpets, rugs and runners for a wide variety of situations and styles, from

contemporary to traditional. However there are a series of themes that run across our

portfolio:

• Many of our ranges are handmade. They are woven on traditional hand looms,

hand-knotted or hand-sewn. They are tactile and charming because they display the

slight quirkiness and irregularity that can only be made by hand

• Natural fibres predominate because for blending beauty, comfort and durability,

pure wool is still the best. We also offer rugs in leather and in pure Chinese silk, while

we chose viscose for our new Simla broadlooms, for its dramatic silk-like sheen

• We love natural colours and their ability to make a statement or to fit naturally

into a wide range of interiors. They are stylish but timeless, and are easy to live with too.

This year we have added more cool greys and taupes to our collection in response to

forthcoming trends

• We deliberately use texture to increase choice. From sumptuous, smooth velvets

to bold boucles and subtle stripes, customers will find a range of interesting options

within each natural tone

• We have built flexibility into our offering. Jacaranda stocks 4m and 5m widths of

most broadloom ranges. We can make bespoke rugs and runners to match our

carpets. We regularly colour match and hand-knot Himalayan rugs to unique designs

supplied by customers

• Jacaranda is dedicated to ethical production practices. Our products

are handmade, not mass produced and the traditional wooden looms used for our

hand-woven and hand-knotted ranges require no electricity. Where possible we weave

from undyed wool, thus reducing potentially damaging dyes within production and the

environment. We visit our manufacturers regularly so know their labour and production

practices. All our rug suppliers are Goodweave registered and inspected.

Why natural fibres?We believe that pure wool still makes the best carpets. The elasticity of good quality wool gives

excellent resilience and wear properties. Its fibres are covered in a thin membrane which inhibits

water penetration, so providing natural stain resistance. Wool is naturally flame retardant. It

holds less ‘static’ than most synthetic yarns so does not attract dust, or promote the growth of

dust mites or bacteria.

At Jacaranda we often receive compliments such as “we love the naturalness of your colours” or

“you have just the right tones”. In great part this is due to our natural, undyed wool products. We

are able to offer such a wide range of ‘undyed’ colours by sourcing different wools from around

the world. Dyes often create pollution in producer countries, another reason why we like to work

with undyed yarn.

This year we have added to the viscose broadlooms in our range, see Simla on page 7. Viscose

is in fact a natural fibre spun from cellulose. Viscose is not as hard-wearing or stain resistant as

wool, but it does give a dramatic silk-like sheen, at a fraction of the price of the pure Chinese silk

that we hand-knot into our Himalayan rugs.

At Jacaranda we aim to offer carpets and rugs of real character, so as our portfolio has grown, we have moved towards natural materials

woven by traditional methods. We believe that it is these labour intensive processes that actually create our ‘characterful’ textures and

wonderful, natural colour bank.

What are these processes?All the floorcoverings in this brochure labelled

hand-woven have been created on traditional

wooden looms. These need no electricity with

the weavers manually moving the wooden

frames and the shuttle to interweave the yarn

over thin metal ‘rods’. When removed these

rods create a ‘loop’ as seen in designs such

as Abha on page 12, or cut and hand sheared

into ‘Velvet’ as on page 9. All our hand-woven

designs are backed with latex to secure the

pile, then sun-dried, checked and hand-

finished.

Jacaranda’s Natural Weave is our only range

of machine woven broadloom and this we

have included for its superb environmental

credentials, see page 13.

Jacaranda’s Himalayan rugs on pages 29-36

are hand-knotted using traditional Tibetan rug

making techniques. Here the weavers sit at a

fixed loom, following by eye the pattern fixed to

the frame above, and creating each and every

knot by hand. This is an extremely laborious

process, creating just 10cm of rug per day,

but the quality and longevity of these rugs are

superb.

Please check that handmade floorcoverings are right for you or your client

We choose to use labour intensive processes and natural fibres to reduce the environmental impact of our carpet production. We believe also, that they are responsible for our ‘characterful’ textures and beautiful, natural colours. We love the slight quirkiness that can only be hand-made.

However these handmade characteristics so highly valued by many, do not appeal to all. Hand-weaving and hand-knotting cannot and do not set out to mirror the uniformity of ‘machine made’ carpet. Those wanting a perfectly uniform finish should consider something machine woven such as Natural Weave on page 13.

At Jacaranda we take quality control very seriously, and each roll and rug is checked and rechecked to make sure that it falls within industry tolerances. However slight variations in colour and weave are inevitable and part of their ‘handmade’ character rather than faults. Natural fibres may fade over time, especially if exposed to strong light.

jacaranda offers 2 ways to have your chosen Hand-woven rugs made-to-measure. They can be manufactured at source, as shown here, or cut to size and bordered in Britain (see page 27).

Your choice has implications for the:

• Textures you can choose

• Edging or borders available

• Backing of your rug

• Delivery lead time

• And lastly price.

You should choose to have your Bespoke Rug Hand-woven at Source if you want to recreate any of the designs from pages 18-25 to your own dimensions.

Jacaranda can also hand-weave at source, rugs made from all the broadloom carpet textures on pages 4-15 except Natural Weave. You can ask us to create rugs with borders or simple designs, by combining different colours within the same range. Jacaranda can combine Rajasthan and Sanskrit (page 9) into one rug, or weave a bespoke rug from 2 or more colours of Heavy Velvet (page 9). Several textures can be woven into circular or oval rugs. All are supplied with a cotton secondary backing, and hand-sewn edges as pictured on this page.

They take 12 weeks to produce on average and are priced per m2 in our price list.

jacaranda offers 2 ways to have your chosen Hand-woven rugs made-to-measure. They can be cut to size and bordered in Britain, as shown here, or manufactured at source (see page 26)

You might prefer your rug Cut to Size and Bordered in Britain if:

• You would like it bordered in leather, suede, cotton or linen

• Timing is tight.

You can choose any of the textures from our selection of broadlooms on pages 4-15. You then elect to have it blind-hemmed or whipped at the edge as shown here. Alternatively you can choose a border from below, overleaf or from the wider selection in Jacaranda’s Border Folder. Again rugs can be circular, oval or rectangular. The backing on your rug may be Cotton, Jute or Actionbac depending on the construction of the broadloom you have chosen (see page 16).

Delivery of rugs bordered in Britain is normally within 5 weeks. Jacaranda will cost these rugs at time of order, based on the following calculation.

The Bordering Cost is added to the Rug Centre Cost where:

• The Bordering Cost is calculated by multiplying the linear metre price for bordering, by the length of the rug perimeter

• The Rug Centre Cost is calculated by multiplying the broadloom cut length price, by the broadloom roll width, by your rug length or width (depending on the most economical way to cut it from the broadloom roll).

Each rug is individually created the Tibetan way, by a family owned company which draws on generations of rug making expertise brought with them from Tibet. Both they and Jacaranda are Goodweave registered, as a guarantee of ethical production practices.

This range really does offer you the customer, the opportunity to be as creative as you wish. To really make the most of it, you will need the Jacaranda Himalayan Folder and a Colour Book. Here’s how:

Design If you like one of the designs shown on pages 32 to 36, you can ask us to reproduce it to whatever size you wish. You can ask us to change the design slightly, by copying and marking up the ‘plans’ printed alongside each rug photograph. If you send us drawings of completely new and unique designs, we will reply with CAD drawings. There is a small charge for providing colour poms and woven rug segment samples for customer approval. For more designs see www.jacarandacarpets.com.

ColourChoose colours from these pages, or from the wool and silk swatches in Jacaranda’s Colour Book (pictured above). These can be applied to your own design or mixed and matched to existing designs by copying and marking up the ‘plans’ printed alongside each rug photograph. The numbers on these plans indicate the number and position of colours in each design. For a small ‘matching’ charge, we can colour match to fabrics, paint samples and pantones; supplying colour ‘poms’ for customer approval.

FibreRugs are knotted from pure Chinese silk and from fine quality wool from the highest plateaux of Tibet. The high lanolin content of this wool increases the lustre of these rugs as they age. We use New Zealand wool for the palest colours. You can choose a variety of wool/silk mixes from the samples in our Himalayan Folder. Pure silk motifs woven against pure wool backgrounds are particularly effective and these motifs can be sheared flush with their background, or left ‘high/low’ as shown here.

TextureChoose either the velvet or the cut/loop option from our Himalayan Folder. Choose from 60, 100 or 120 knots per square inch. As the number of knots per square inch rises, the texture becomes finer and the life expectancy of the rug increases. 60 knots per square inch gives a luxurious chunky feel to the rug.

This range really does offer you the customer, the opportunity to be as creative as you wish. To really make the most of it, you will need Jacaranda’s Leather Folder and Swatch Book.

Design If you like any of the designs shown on pages 39 - 40, you can ask us to reproduce it to whatever size you wish. You can ask us to change the design slightly, by copying and marking up the ‘plans’ printed alongside each rug photograph. If you send us a completely new and unique design, we will reply with a line drawing, which when approved, is stitched into your unique leather rug. There is a small charge for providing a rug segment sample for customer approval.

ColourThere are 8 different coloured hide samples in Jacaranda’s Leather Folder, see below. These can be applied to your own design or mixed and matched to existing Jacaranda designs by copying and marking up the ‘plans’ printed alongside each rug photograph. The numbers on these plans indicate the colour codes and position of colours in each design. Please note that these are naturally occurring hide colours. We take great care while grading the hide into 8 colours, within strict colour tolerances. However every hide is unique and tones will vary slightly in density and hue.

jacaranda’s Leather Squares DesignThis can be ordered in the colours shown opposite. However we hope that our customers will experiment by substituting other hide colours from our Leather Folder into made-to-measure rugs in this design. Whilst varying the size of the squares to suit the dimensions of the room for which it is destined.

Ordering from jacaranda

Jacaranda supplies broadloom carpets, rugs and runners to retailers and interior designers. If you are a trade customer please contact our office at the address on the back cover, for orders and quotes. If you are a consumer do please make contact too, as we can put you in touch with one of our trade customers in your local area.

When choosing your carpet, please consider the following:

Colour Matching

Jacaranda can colour match the Himalayan Hand-knotted rugs on pages 29-36. We can also colour match the Heavy Velvet Broadlooms on page 9 for orders over 50m2.

Colours can be matched to the swatches within Jacaranda’s Colour Book or to fabrics, paint samples or pantones. There is a small ‘matching charge’ so that Jacaranda can provide colour swatches for customer approval. Production times for colour matched products are 3 months on average, but Jacaranda will confirm lead time and price for each individual order.

Pets and Pulled Loops

Cats and dogs can ‘pull’ loops in loop-pile or cut

& loop carpets. Owners of very ‘active’ pets could

consider one of Jacaranda’s cut-pile designs

instead.

Pile Reversal

All velvet carpets may occasionally show pile

reversal. This is a natural phenomenon where

local conditions where a carpet is laid, cause

sections of carpet pile to change direction, so

reflecting the light differently. Despite a great

deal of research, no common manufacturing

process has been found to cause pile reversal so

it is not a manufacturing fault. Pile reversal may

change appearance but will not affect wear.

Fading

Natural fibres will fade over time and this may be

accelerated by exposure to strong light. Natural

undyed colours may fade more than dyed ones.

This should be taken into consideration when

choosing carpets for areas that experience strong

light or direct sunlight.

Stock Reservation

Jacaranda is happy to reserve stock for 48 hours.

Size Tolerance

While every effort is made to manufacture to the correct size, slight variations are unavoidable and natural fibres can shrink as they move to a different climate. For broadloom we advise that the customer order 3% more length than is required. Rug sizes may vary by up to 2.5%.

Colour variation

As with all natural products, colours may vary slightly between production batches. Please state at time of order where carpet cuts are to adjoin, so ensuring that those cuts are supplied from the same colour batch. The colour of samples may also change over time especially if exposed to strong sunlight. If an exact colour match is essential, please reserve stock and ask Jacaranda to send a cutting from that batch, we will be happy to oblige.

DELIVERY, FITTING, CARPET CARE...

DeliveryOur standard delivery times within mainland Britain are:

• 5 working days for stock rugs

• 7 working days approx for broadloom

• An average of 5 weeks for rugs & runners bordered in Britain

• An average of 12 weeks for products colour matched or made-to-measure at source

• For all bespoke products Jacaranda will confirm lead times at the point of order.

All standard deliveries must be to a business address with good access for HGV’s. For broadloom deliveries, the driver will require help with unloading and delivery is to the ground floor access point only.

Please call our office for prices and times for ‘express’ or ‘special’ deliveries within Britain, as well as deliveries to Europe and further afield.

InspectionOur labour intensive processes are integral to the creation of our ‘characterful’ textures and wonderful natural colours. They cannot and do not set out to mirror the uniformity of ‘machine made’ carpet. Any slight variations in colour and weave in our products are part of their ‘handmade character’ rather than ‘faults’.

At Jacaranda we take quality control very seriously and each roll or rug is checked and

rechecked. Despite our best efforts however the odd genuine error does slip through and strange things can happen in transit.

Please ensure that all products are checked and any problems reported within 48 hours of delivery. If your floorcovering arrives with damaged packaging, please note the damage on the delivery note before signing for receipt. If you have any doubts about the product, please phone our office before fitting. Jacaranda cannot take responsibility for problems reported after the carpet has been cut and fitted.

Fitting BroadloomsUse good quality solid underlay. For areas less than 25m2, stretch onto double grippers. For areas over 25m2, carpets should be secured by the double stick method. All cut edges should be sealed using seaming cement and heat seaming tape should be used for all seams and joins. Any variations to standard fitting procedure appear on the relevant product pages.

Carpet CareRegular maintenance: Clean carpets regularly with a cylinder type vacuum. We recommend ‘dry extraction’ rather than ‘wet clean’ methods if your Jacaranda carpet requires an overall clean and this is particularly important for viscose products. Please test any cleaning products on a small or hidden area first, as some treatments are more aggressive than others.

Shedding: All pure wool cut-pile carpets will shed fibres when new, from where the wool has been cut to create the pile. This shedding is normal. It can be removed with a vacuum cleaner. It will soon cease and will not affect the appearance or durability of the carpet.

Stain protection treatments: Jacaranda does not recommend the application of stain inhibiting treatments to their carpets. Apart from leading to a false sense of security, the shedding normal to new wool carpets may reduce the effectiveness of such treatments in heavy traffic areas. These areas then change colour faster than lighter traffic areas where the ‘protection’ remains.

Dealing with accidents: Dry spillages quickly with absorbent paper. For pure wool products you can remove potential stains by adding cold water and dabbing dry, but please do not wet viscose products. All carpets should be dabbed dry, as rubbing can burst the pile.
