From Kristi’s Desk
Thank goodness we survived the humid August heat wave here in Loma Linda. We are preparing to greet our 55 new students in a few weeks with cool, dry air! Our welcome orientation includes the BS, AS, and online degree completion students. As our numbers grow, so do our responsibilities to continue our tradition of a quality, Christ-centered educational experience. Many thanks to all of you who attended the retirement luncheon last February for our dear Joni. My sincere appreciation goes out to Jana Nation, BS ’10 for planning the gorgeous luncheon décor and special tributes. We miss Joni more everyday! I talk to my life-size cardboard Joni look alike “stand-in,” which sits in the corner of my office, on a daily basis to help answer the department challenges! To continue the tradition of research excellence that Joni established in the dental hygiene department, Michelle Hurlbutt, MSDH, assistant professor, stepped in to mentor and organize our research projects this year. You can read about the student’s well-earned recognition at the CDHA and ADHA annual meetings in this newsletter. As we move into this 53rd school year, I ask for your prayers and continued financial support. Our students struggle with meeting the financial demands of a professional education. Your gifts to our Violet Bates and Joni Stephens Scholarship

PINNING CEREMONY 2012 HIGHLIGHTS
Held Friday evening, May 25, at the Campus Hill Church, the annual pinning ceremony provided a meaningful preamble to the dental hygiene baccalaureate and commencement services. Included in this high evening is the presentation of 16 awards to dental hygiene students (see list below). The pinning ceremony tradition gives each class the opportunity to publicly accept the responsibilities that accompany their profession as caregivers and to pledge “before God and all present . . . I will live my life in a way that brings honor to my family, my profession, my community, my school, and my God.”

CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR BROWN ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS
On August 23, 2012, Governor Edmond G. Brown, Jr., announced that Michelle Hurlbutt, of Upland, has been appointed to the Dental Hygiene Committee of California, where she has served since 2009. Hurlbutt has been an assistant professor at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry since 1999 and a registered dental hygienist at the office of Nathan Pfister, DDS and William Domb, DMD since 1998.
ADHA CONVENTION STUDENT RESEARCH
SAIPAN HOLDS‘CLINIC WITH A HEART’
Dental services totaling nearly $18,000, plus 59 vouchers for future dental care, were provided by the Saipan Seventh-day Adventist Clinic during its “Clinic With a Heart” event in May. Services provided included deep or therapeutic cleanings, gum therapy, fillings, and extractions, among others. The Clinic also gave away antibiotics and other medicines. Kenneth Pierson, DDS ‘00, clinic director, described the turnout as “overwhelming.” “It would be nice to provide even more services but our capacity is limited. We’re hoping to make it a community wide effort in the future,” he added. Like the Loma Linda University event, people lined up the night before. Chalan Kiya resident Eva Cuevas was the first in line, camping outside the clinic at 7 pm on Saturday with her 5-year-old daughter Jane Nicole. Both Eva and Jane Nicole received tooth extraction services. “I wanted to make sure that my daughter and I get a spot,” said Eva who had complained of pain in her front teeth for three months. Jane Nicole, said the clinic staff also taught her the importance of taking care of her teeth. “They told me to brush my teeth and they gave me a free toothbrush.” The Clinic is the only private dental clinic providing community service for those who don’t have dental insurance. Many of the staff are Loma Linda University alumni, including Lori Serna, BS '97, and Stacy Stroup, BS '10.
Michelle Kaiser, Lindsey Sharman, and Amanda Armand. Effects of Magnolia Bark Extract on Oral Bacterial Growth, were first place winners of the student research poster session at the 89th annual ADHA Convention which took place in Phoenix, Arizona, June 13 - 19, 2012.
JONI STEPHENS RETIRES
It is not easy to pull off a surprise on someone upon retirement after
they've been around for more than 45 years, however, it can be done! The devil is in the details, and there were
plenty of them. Little did Joni know that she would be likened to a princess, superman, and everything in-between at the annual dental hygiene banquet, held Friday, February 10, 2012. Host of the "Joni Stephens Roast," Lane C. Thomsen, DDS '65. MS '74, presented two Joni's, one a life-size cardboard look alike. As he dressed the life-size paper doll in some of Joni's favorite outfits those in attendance were invited to make a gift and have their photo taken (to benefit student scholarships, of course). Joni has been called “playful, bouncy, effervescent, a dynamo,” and a few more descriptive words you see on page one. Dean Charles Goodacre noted that she has spent “countless hours making research educational, fun, and consequential.” She can look calmly at a student group’s grandiose (read “unworkable”) research proposal and, through a series of questions, rescue the investigation often into award winning viability. It was imperative in celebrating Joni's accomplishments and well-deserved retirement, that the deliberations be fun,
PAGE 6 Volume 23, No. 2 Fall 2012
and fun they were! Joni was presented with a personalized Loma Linda University golf bag and other appreciation gifts. Quipped Joni in the middle of the mayhem, "I'd have retired earlier had I known it would be so much fun." Having said all this, however, the facts are that Joni is shy. She really doesn't like a whole lot of attention. It's not so easy to pull off a surprise on someone who is shy . . . but Dean Goodacre managed to do so at his annual Dean's Circle dinner on the 3rd of May at the Summit House in Fullerton. Said Joni as she was leaving, "Had I known, I wouldn't have come. It was great!" She did, however, have a good time at one more retirement event. If you haven't already done so, you'll want to read Dentistry Journal to discover just what Joni has done all those years. The impact of her work, you can be sure, will be remembered fondly. Because of her selfless sacrifice in the classroom and in promoting dental hygiene, students will hear about "fun" Joni for years to come. We know they will because colleagues, alumni and friends honored her 2012 retirement with the establishment of the Joni Stephens Scholarship Endowment. Spearheaded by her classmates whom she proudly states are,"the best-ever Class of 1969," the fund is growing and will provide research scholarships. With her retirement in place, Joni has plans to spend some time with her husband, Ronald. A nurse anesthetist, Ron has retired, too. The couple plan to participate in volunteer projects allowing them to use their skills side by side. And, they'll be seen chasing a little ball around some greens.

WINNING VIDEO
A $1,000 first prize was awarded to the students of the associate of science degree program in Palm Desert, California, for their instructional video entitled,“Fones Brushing Method.” In collaboration with the American Dental Hygiene Association, Sunstar, a leading producer of mouth and body care products, holds an annual contest offering first-year dental hygiene students prizes for the most creative, two-minute instructional videos that teach children the proper way to brush their teeth. “Be creative, fun and original,” Lilli Smothers, manager of student relations for the ADHA, advises dental hygiene student contestants. The award money goes toward the winning school’s dental hygiene program. Ashlynn, the daughter of one of the AS students, stars in the first place video. “We are happy to have represented Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in such a fun and positive way,” says Andrea McGinity. “We had a wonderful time creating the song and video and are grateful that we are able to educate children in such a fun and exciting way!” The video is available at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_ZSUXQoFcY&feature=youtu.be

GOOD SAMARITANSCULPTURE
A 3D sandblasted relief sculpture depicting what has become an iconic representation of Loma Linda University’s mission was unveiled last year at the new dental hygiene facility in Palm Desert. Another sculpture was placed in the Center for Dentistry and Orthodontics. A third piece will be placed as a major focal area in the Clinic waiting room in Prince Hall. These sculptures are based on the original work by Alan Collins prominently displayed between the School of Dentistry and the University Church. Collins, an English born artist, is noted for his work on the John F. Kennedy Memorial at Runnymede, England, his work at Great Britain’s Guildford Cathedral, and for a recent work on campus representing Jesus as the healer of the woman who touched His robe. Two of these pieces have been sponsored by alumni, however, the first sculpture placed in Palm Desert has not. Should you be interested in sponsoring this work in glass, please contact the Office of Development at (909) 558-4754 or email [email protected].

CONTINUING THE TRADITION OF TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION
The accelerating profusion of innovation in dental technology presents practitioners and educators with challenges and opportunities, and patients with unprecedented oral healthcare advantages. The challenge for dental schools is not only to stay abreast of constant innovation in diagnostic and treatment equipment but continually to provide faculty and students the opportunity to become familiar with the most recent advances in dental technology. The formidable expenditures required for a dental school to regularly expose its students to a panoply of the latest offerings in dental technology is obvious. But the exposure of dental students to the most advanced equipment is essential to their efficient transition into peerless, 21st century dental practices. To address this dilemma, the Center for Research and Education in Technology (CRET) assembled a consortium of dental manufacturers, suppliers, and an insurance company to provide the most technologically advanced oral healthcare delivery equipment to dental students and their instructors at respected dental schools around the country that are capable of providing adequate space, faculty, staff and administration to support this important innovation in dental education. The vanguard of those collaborations is the TECHNOLOGY
CENTER at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. Grand opening celebration of this new facility was held on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., with guests from leading dental companies from throughout North America.
Arial “Rene” Ramirez, dental assistant, Advanced Specialty Education Program in the Periodontics Clinic received special training on the Sirona Galileos 3D imaging system. He demonstrates the use of the system to dental assistant, Norma Carrillo.
