Rack Mount PrecautionsBefore installing this unit in a network equipment rack, prepare the site to allow for the following precautions:

Elevated Oper-ating AmbientTemperature:

If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greaterthan room ambient temperature. Therefore, consider installing the equipment in an environment that is compatible with themaximum allowable ambient temperature specified for the appliance (40° C).

Reduced AirFlow:

Install the equipment in a rack so that the amount of air flow required for safe operation of the equipment is not reduced. Donot block the sides of the appliance, and leave approximately 8 inches of space, on either sides of the unit for proper vent-ilation. The air flow clearance should be 8 inches on either sides.

MechanicalLoading:

Mount the appliance so that it is level in the rack and that a hazardous condition is not caused.

Circuit Over-loading:

Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit and the effect that overloading of thecircuits might have on over-current protection and supply wiring. Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratingsshould be used when addressing this concern.

Reliable Earth-ing:

Maintain reliable earthing (grounding) of rack-mounted equipment. Appliance frame should be screwed down to racks toensure proper grounding path. In addition, pay special attention to supply connections other than direct connections to thebranch circuit (such as use of power strips).

Power SupplyCord replace-ment:

Replacement of the power supply cord must of the same type cord and plug configuration that was shipped with the unit.

IP Addresses

Configuring and administering the PerfectStorm ONE appliance requires an understanding of the IP addresses used by the system. This sectionprovides an explanation of the IP address requirements, assignment, and usage.

In this section:

Virtual Machines and IP Addresses 25Static IP Address Requirements 25IP Address Usage 26IP Address Assignment 26

Page 25: Ixia PerfectStorm ONE Getting Started Guide

Virtual Machines and IP AddressesThe PerfectStorm ONE appliance is designed to supportboth IxLoad and BreakingPoint. To this end, the basic archi-tecture includes a Linux operating system (FlixOS) thathosts two virtual machines: one for IxOS and one for Break-ingPoint.This scheme requires two management IP addresses:

l FlixOS and BreakingPoint are both Linux based, andshare a single address.

l IxOS, which is Windows based, uses a separateaddress.

These addresses can be automatically assigned via DHCP(the default) or statically assigned.

Static IP Address Requirementsl The two management IP addresses must be in the same subnet.l The addresses cannot be on the following subnets (these subnets are reserved for internal chassis/card communications):

10.0.x.x/1610.1.1.x/2410.1.2.x/24

LED IndicatorsThe PerfectStorm ONE appliance provides LED indicators that provide a visual presentation of the operational status of the device and its indi-vidual ports.

Test Port LED IndicatorsEach test port on the unit has a set of application traffic LED indicators. The following table describes the purpose and meaning of each indicator:

Indicator Meaning

Link OFF: link is downSolid Green: link is up

Tx OFF: Tx is inactiveSolid Green: Tx is active

Rx/Err OFF: Rx is inactiveBlinking Red: Rx is active with errorsBlinking Green: Rx is active

Power LED IndicatorThe Power LED indicator is located to the left of the Power button. This LED indicates the operational state of the unit:

n Green indicates that the system is ON and all power supplies are operational.n Off indicates that the system is OFF, or one or more power supplies are not operational.

65 |   Troubleshooting

Page 66: Ixia PerfectStorm ONE Getting Started Guide

LAN Port LED IndicatorThe unit's LAN port has an integrated LED indicator:

n Solid green indicates that the port is operating correctly; blinking green indicates that data is being sent or received.n Amber or red indicates that the port is not operating correctly.

IP Addressing IssuesThe PerfectStorm ONE system requires two management IP addresses:

l the WebUI addressl the IxOS address.

If your network implements a DHCP service, the PerfectStorm ONE IP addresses will automatically be assigned by that service, unless youchoose to assign static IP addresses instead. When assigning static IP addresses, you must observe the following requirements:

l The two management IP addresses must be in the same subnet.l The addresses cannot be on the following subnets:

10.0.x.x/1610.1.1.x/2410.1.2.x/24

These subnets are reserved for internal chassis/card communications.

Failure to observe these requirements will result in connectivity failures.

Troubleshooting |   66

Page 67: Ixia PerfectStorm ONE Getting Started Guide

Troubleshooting Licensing IssuesFollowing is a list of licensing issues that can result in operational problems:

l Licensing: An IxOS license is required to run both BreakingPoint and IxLoad.l License invalidation: Time discrepancies between the network and the PerfectStorm ONE system will invalidate the installed licenses. To

avoid this, configure the PerfectStorm ONE to use NTP (or manage the time setting manually, if NTP is not an available to you). Refer toSet the System Time on page 41 for instructions.

Troubleshooting Other IssuesFollowing is a list of other known issues that can result in operational problems:

l L2 switches: Check for intermediate L2 switches that are configured to allow only a single L2 MAC per interface. If a switch so configuredis present in your network, FlixOS will retrieve an IP address.
