The men and organizations pictured tothe right are those who have made a

$10,000 or more commitment to support theValley of Pittsburgh Children’s Dyslexia CenterEndowment Fund.

As Freemasons, we have always beenbenevolent and charitable. For Scottish RiteMasons, our Charity is to teach children withdyslexia how to read. It is important in givingthem social confidence.

The teaching method is the Orton-Gilling-ham program. It is a one tutor – one studentratio. This method is very expensive butextremely effective. It costs approximately$5,000 a year for each child.  Our goal is toraise $2,500,000 to endow the Children’sDyslexia Center for the future.

To make it easier to make this commitment, you can spread out your $10,000 donationover a ten year period.  Call Bro. Ray Dietz,33°, at 412-369-9500 for information. Thefuture of our children is our most importantmission. I encourage each of you to have yourpicture on this page and be a BUILDER of thisMasonic benevolence.

Your donation is tax-deductible. Thomas K. Sturgeon, 33°Deputy for Pennsylvania

Valley of Pittsburgh Officers

The history of Valentine’s Dayand the story of its patron saint

is shrouded in mystery. We do knowthat February has long been cele-brated as a month of romance, andthat St. Valentine’s Day, as we knowit today, contains vestiges of bothChristian and ancient Romantradition.

But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associ-ated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes atleast three different saints namedValentine or Valentinus, all of whomwere martyred. One legend contendsthat Valentine was a priest who servedduring the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decidedthat single men made better soldiersthan those with wives and families, heoutlawed marriage for young men.Valentine, realizing the injustice of thedecree, defied Claudius and continuedto perform marriages for young loversin secret. When Valentine’s actions

were discovered, Claudius orderedthat he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentinemay have been killed for attempting tohelp Christians escape harsh Romanprisons, where they were often beatenand tortured.

According to one legend, animprisoned Valentine actuallysent the first “valentine” greetinghimself after he fell in love witha young girl – possibly his

jailor’s daughter – who visited himduring his confinement. Before hisdeath, it is alleged that he wrote her aletter signed “From your Valentine,” anexpression that is still in use today.

Although the truth behind the Valen-tine legends is murky, the stories allemphasize his appeal as a sympa-thetic, heroic and – most importantly –romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation,Valentine would become one of themost popular saints in England andFrance. v

Let’s Talk About . . .

Becoming a Master Mason Jeffrey M. Wonderling, 33°Valley Membership Chairman

Brother Raymond T. Dietz, 33°,Right Worshipful Grand

Master of Pennsylvania and BrotherThomas K. Sturgeon, 33°, Deputyfor Pennsylvania, have joined forcesin planning a rare One Day MasonicOpportunity whereby a man canbecome a Master Mason and aScottish Rite Mason in one day.

The Grand Master is continuingthe use of the “Selective InvitationBrochures” which you may give to afriend that you feel meets our mem-bership criteria. Remember, the keyword is “Selective”. Therefore, it iscritical that we choose potentialmembers wisely.

There are several innovativechanges from the previous events. The Grand Master has instituted twoprograms to recognize your efforts tointroduce someone to Freemasonry. The 1st line signer on a petition willreceive a Masonic Necktie which hehas designed. There are four differ-ent colors available so four petitionswill get the 1st line signer all fourcolors.

There is also a membershipincentive program whereby the 1stline signer on each petition will becredited 60 points toward merchan-dise found in the online catalog youwill find at www.pamasons.com.There are many quality items tochoose from and the recipient mayuse the points as he receives themor accumulate them toward a largerpurchase.

Born from immense respect andgratitude for our Veterans the GrandMaster is reducing the Grand Lodgefees by $50 and the Lodge fees by$50, a total savings of $100. Anyactive or Honorably DischargedMilitary Personnel are eligible to takeadvantage of this wonderful benefit.

I have found that membership inthe Masonic Fraternity has so manybenefits. Life lessons are taught inthe Degrees when you enter theorganization. If you pay attentionyou will soon find a template to guide

you in becoming a better man and abetter Mason.

For me Masonry has always beenabout the relationships I have forgedand fond memories of truly great men.You may find yourself sitting next to acarpenter, attorney, doctor, or student.Men and women with a myriad of lifeexperiences that are shared duringour time together – experiences thatjust may give you a different perspec-tive on life that can’t help but broadenyour intellect.

But, the most important benefit ofall is the fraternal component of help-ing each other – which is the realreason for the organization. Not onlydo we help each other grow but wehelp each other in daily needs andwants. Need a product or service or ahelping hand? There is a Brotherready to help if he can.

I have complete confidence that Icould get help with anything that mayarise in my life. I do business with aBrother to support him and his family.I do not expect a discount but am con-fident that a Brother will give me anhonest, fair, and quality product orservice. In return, I will indeed go outof my way to serve a Brother MasterMason because when I knelt at thataltar 22 years ago I said I would.

By joining the Scottish Rite ofFreemasonry, you greatly increaseyour fraternal circle. And, during thisOne Day Rare Opportunity of becom-ing a Master Mason, 3° and a ScottishRite Mason, 32° in One Day is thatthe Scottish Rite degrees are FREE!

The date is October 29, 2016 atSoldiers & Sailors Hall.

About 15 years ago Itraveled to a local

Lodge, (which shall remainnameless) to confer a FirstDegree on a good friend ofmine.

The Worshipful Master, also a good friend, eagerlyaccepted my offer to per-form the work, and being asubsequent recipient of the CenturyClub award for conferring over 100Lodge degrees, I was confident ondoing a good job.

I completed the degree with no“prompts” or “hesitations”, andreceived the usual congratulationsfrom the attending brothers, although most Lodges give thesecompliments no matter how goodor bad the presentation.

As the meeting adjourned, a PastMaster who I had never met walkedup to me and said…”YOU MISSEDTHREE WORDS”, which took meaback. I thought for a moment, andshould have replied “YOU AREWELCOME” for ME spending MYtime and traveling to YOUR Lodgeto confer a degree on YOUR candi-date and alleviating the work loadon YOUR officers. But instead, Itactfully asked “Which 3 words”?He couldn’t remember, but assuredme I had 3 wrong words.

I have heard this statement manytimes in my 41 Masonic years, evenin my own Lodge, and understandthe importance of getting all thewords right in the “word of mouth”system of learning the work. But

what is the greater priorityin conferring degrees, getting all the words letterperfect, to satisfy the PastMasters and achieve anadvancement standard, orinspiring the candidate tolive his life by the beautifulprinciples that define ourfraternity? I vote for the

latter, but some would disagree withme.

I have witnessed letter perfectdegrees, done with a most monoto-nous, unemotional and dry delivery, but the important thing is, no wordsare missed! Do you think a candi-date knows if any words aremissed? Do you think a candidatecares if any words are missed? Most likely, he is scared to deathand happy the degree is over. Sohere is the $64,000 question. Is adry, unemotional and monotonousdegree experience done letterperfect (in any Masonic organiza-tion) going to inspire a candidate tobe an active and vibrant member, orturn him into an inactive and futuresuspended member?

I believe there is a proper “Flowchart” when conferring degrees, which has the words formulated inthe brain, travel to the heart, thenflow from the lips, which has alwaysworked well for me. The directbrain to lips method might work, and then again, might not. Remem-ber also, that no one will remembera great degree, but everyone willremember a bad one. v

Grand Lodge, work with your Valley, and work with each other to show the worldwhen we, as Masons, engage in such a just undertaking that success will crownour efforts.

This Man to Mason day is not a Grand Lodge day.  It is not a Scottish Riteday.  It is a Pennsylvania Freemason day! It is a day for each of us to practicethe virtues that we are taught and to work together for the good of all.  It is a daywhen worthy men, who otherwise may not have the necessary time, will be ableto become members of our ancient and honorable fraternity.

The ritual will be first class and exemplary.  There will be no short cuts in thethree symbolic degrees.

The Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite will play a most important role in thisgreat day.  Much of the success depends on us, the workers in the Valley ofPittsburgh. The Valley of Uniontown. The Valley of New Castle. And all of theother Valleys in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

ALL WE ASK OF YOU IS TO IDENTIFY WORTHY MEN AND IN A PROPER MANNER GRANT THEM THIS SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY TO BE A MASON.

Do not wait for the next brother to do it. You must do it yourself, NOW! Thinkabout how it must have been over two hundred years ago when our foundingfathers started this great fraternity in Pennsylvania.  Could it have been easy?I think not!  They felt the need, they recognized the greatness that lie ahead, they accepted the challenge, they committed to making it work.  Because ofthem we have had the great experience of being Masons.  Now it is our turn todo the same for the generations that will follow us.

And this special day for those joining the Scottish Rite – it will beFREE! Yes, FREE! Initiation fees will be dropped.

A personalized Invitational brochure is available for your use.  • Have the office personalize it with your name, address, phone and email

information and then hand it to a good man.• Take time to explain our Fraternity to him.  • Brag about the famous men who are and have been Masons.   • Use all of the tools that we have.Time was, time is, but for us, the 32nd degree Freemasons, the time is

NOW! It is the time for each of us to pay back just a little for all of the enjoy-ment we have had. The payment is to share our fraternity with other worthymen. I ask all of you to join with me in this effort.

In the Valley of Pittsburgh we are partnering with our Grand Master,Ill...Brother Raymond T. Dietz, 33°.  As your Deputy for Pennsylvania of theSupreme Council, I am committed to this partnership.

Together there is no stopping us. Let us not be stopped!  I thank each of youfor the privilege of serving and for your dedication to our beloved Freemasonry.

Note: Petitions for Blue Lodge degrees will need to be read no later than theSeptember Stated Meeting with favorable ballots no later than the OctoberStated Meeting. Scottish Rite petitions will be accepted to October 21.

So Mote it Always Be!

IN O

NE D

AY!

Brethren, I hope that you allhad a wonderful holiday

and that you are as excited by thepossibilities of the New Year as Iam. First, I want to thank all ofthose who worked so hard to helpmake the Children’s Christmasparty such a success. It is a truemiracle to see such joy and happiness onthe faces of so many children. In addition, such a team effort by Valley membersshows the public that when Masons jointogether in unanimity they can accom-plish anything. My Brothers, your effortshelped bring the spirit of the season tothose in need and those who need re-minded what it is we celebrate each year.

Looking forward in 2016, the New Yearbrings us new opportunities to reenergizeand refocus our efforts toward being thebest Scottish Rite Masons we can be andsharing this enthusiasm with others.

I hope many of you had the chance tospend time with family and friends, renewing these bonds. Let us, asFreemasons, renew our bonds andcreate new ones – approaching the newyear with the resolution to increasemembership, strengthen relationships, and educate others concerning what weoffer to the world.

We can do this by inviting brothers toride along to the February stated meet-

ing. Remind brothers that theymay become a Scottish RiteMason this year for free. This is arare opportunity and an excellentchance to gain new members.Even if that brother doesn’t availhimself of the opportunity, he cantell others and help spread this

information to his contacts who will in turnshare it with theirs. We can call a mem-ber that we haven’t seen at a statedmeeting for some time and ask them toaccompany you to the meeting. Take thistime to share what’s been going on withyou and with the Valley of Pittsburgh.Share some fellowship and reinforce thatbond which exists between us all. Finally,we can all better educate ourselves onwhat we do as Scottish Rite Masons andthe many opportunities we enjoy, such asthe upcoming Superbowl party, monthlyFellowship Breakfast, Daytona party,Rose Croix DeMolay conferral and theStory of the Crucifixion, as well as thescholarships we offer and Children’sDyslexia Center we help support.

Together brothers, we can make a bigdifference.

Brethren, let us be resolved to renewour efforts and take our place in theworld, creating new opportunities andmeeting new challenges. v

Why Should I BecomeA Scottish Rite Mason?

"Wherever Freemasonry flourishes there willbe found the highest type of citizenship andthe best standard of living.”

– Albert Pike, 33°

In Freemasonry there is no higherdegree than that of a Master Mason,

the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite serveto enrich the philosophy of the SymbolicLodge. A Mason who chooses to furtherhis Masonic experience by becoming a32° Scottish Rite Mason will be expand-ing upon the fundamental principles ofFreemasonry.

In the Scottish Rite, you will indeedfind an untold wealth of knowledge.

• It will teach you more about Masonry. • It will answer some of the questions

raised in the Blue Lodge degrees.• It is a sort of “graduate course” in

Masonic teachings. In fact, it aids, supplements and reinforces the BlueLodge in every way.

As organizations, these bodies aremutually dependent because theystrengthen each other.

By joining the Scottish Rite, you havean opportunity to expand upon yourknowledge of Freemasonry, to widen yourcircle of friends, and to serve humanity inunique ways. v

“If we are not in Freemasonry to serve, weare in Freemasonry for the wrong reason. You did not join the craft for what youwere going to get out of it; you joined forwhat you could give to it.”

– Thomas W. Jackson, 33°Past Grand Secretary

Henry RifleCompany is de-

lighted to recognize this ancient andhonorable fraternal order with the new Henry

Golden Boy Freemasons Tribute Edition in .22 LRrimfire, proudly featuring imagery instantly recogniza-ble by Masons everywhere on its brightly polished sil-ver receiver.

To further set off this striking masonic tribute edition, the select American walnut stock depicts GeorgeWashington, our first President, in full Masonic regalia, with apron, trowel, and Warden’s column, standing ona “temple” floor in front of a Masonic staircase, in apainted tableau bordered by scrollwork in the samestyle as the receiver.

What better way to acknowledge the order’s longhistory, and reward the work and dedication that you,or someone important to you, has invested in Freema-sonry!

Non-Masons InformationWith roots dating back to the great European stone-

mason guilds of the 14th Century, the Freemasonslater evolved into a fraternal order of brotherhood andservice that spans the globe today.

Each member is initiated into the order andprogresses through the original medieval levels of ad-vancement that include Apprentice, Fellowcraft, andMaster Mason. Dedication to each other, and a beliefin a supreme being (regardless of denomination), areessential elements that bind Freemasons together.

The Masonic lodge serves as a meeting house, educational center for matters Masonic, and a settingfor the rituals associated with the various functions ofadvancement, along with local internal Masonic busi-ness and social activities. Lodges and rituals typicallydisplay standard Masonic symbols familiar even tonon-members, and those include both stone masonsymbology as well as references to the Temple of KingSolomon.

Freemasonry notes its beginnings here in Americain the very early 1700s, with one of its most notablemembers being our first American president, GeorgeWashington. Open to all levels of society from cabdriver to Congress, the Freemasons have includedsuch names as country western singers Roy Acuffand Eddy Arnold, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, South Polediscoverer Roald Amundsen, hotelman John JacobAstor, western star Gene Autry, comedian RichardPryor, actor John Wayne, magician Harry Houdini, jazz legend Count Basie, America’s literary icon MarkTwain, boxing great Sugar Ray Robinson, and Presi-dent Harry S. Truman to name just a few.

Millions of school children with dyslexiaendure frustration and demoralization on

a daily basis as they struggle to acquire skills thatmany of us take for granted. If your child is strug-gling with reading and writing, how do you know ifdyslexia is the cause? Where can you go for help?

For over two decades, the Scottish Rite Masons,Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, have been nationalleaders in the effort to help children and theirfamilies overcome the painful obstacles ofdyslexia. With 49 active Dyslexia Centers in 13states, the Children's Dyslexia Centers tackle thechallenge of dyslexia head-on, both by providingfree tutoring for children with dyslexia and by train-ing a growing cadre of highly skilled and dedicatedtutors.

Dyslexia is an inherited neurological disorderthat affects the way people learn to read and speakas well as how they process things mathematically. Some famous dyslexics include Thomas Edison,Winston Churchill, Walt Disney, Tom Cruise,Leonardo DaVinci, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Dyslexia affects one out of every five people, and affects boys and girls in equal numbers.Children left with untreated dyslexia often sufferdevastating personal consequences. It is thenumber one reason teenagers drop out of school, and is a primary factor in juvenile delinquency.

Research reveals that children with untreateddyslexia become underachieving adults unable tocontribute to society at their fullest capacity.

Dyslexia is, however, a treatable condition.Children with dyslexia need professional help, and the earlier they receive it, the greater theirchances of achieving normal, fully functional lives.

The Scottish Rite 2015-2016year is moving along

quickly. So far we are having agreat year. Meetings and socialactivities this year have been wellattended. We had a good fallreunion class. The Christmasparties were wonderful and weare looking forward to good things for theremainder of the year.

We have a special stated meetingcoming up on February 4. This one is formembers only. The Seaton Hill UniversityPipe Band will perform after the meeting.

Also in February we have our annualSuper Bowl party and the annual showingof the Daytona 500.

Don;t miss the Welcome to Spring andSt. Patrick’s party on March 12.

Other upcoming events include theRose Croix DeMolay conferral, the Storyof the Crucifixion, our usual stated meet-ings, and our baseball outings and tailgateparties with the Pirates and Wild Things.

With only a few months to go beforeour June meeting we still have manymembers who have not yet paid theirdues. It would be quite a blow to theorganization to lose a lot of membersbecause of non-payment. We lose manymembers to death each year but to loseseveral hundred to suspension wouldcertainly weaken the Valley. If you haveany questions regarding your dues, please feel free to contact the Valley officeat 412-939-3579. We cherish your friend-ship and membership in the Scottish Rite,so if you happen to be in financial need, please call us so that we may be of assis-tance with your concerns.

I want to take this opportunity to thankthose who made a contribution to ourlearning center along with their annualdues payment. On another page in thisissue you will find a list of the memberswho have contributed to date. If yourname is not on the list, it is not too late to

be included. You may send acheck to our office (indicate that itis a contribution for the learningcenter) or if you have not yet paidyour dues simply include a contri-bution with your check for dues.Your contributions make it possi-ble for children with dyslexia to

learn to read and follow their dreams. On October 29, 2016, there will be a

special one day class sponsored by theGrand Lodge and the Scottish Rite.Following the Grand Lodge conferral ofthe three Blue Lodge degrees, the Scot-tish Rite will initiate any Master Masonwho wants to become a 32° Mason. Evenbetter, for this class, we will waive theusual initiation fee. In otherwords — it’sFREE. Talk to those men who you knowshould be members of the greatest frater-nity on earth and convince them tobecome masons and also Scottish RiteMasons. This Scottish Rite no-feeopportunity may never happen again. Also remember that those who arealready master masons are urged to takeadvantage of this no-fee opportunity.

Details are available on pages 9 thru 12in this issue and a Day of Opportunitypetition is on the next page. If anyone hasquestions, please call the Scottish Riteoffice at 412-939-3579. v

The Valley of Pittsburgh’sChildren’s Dyslexia

Center provides children with afresh start at success both in lifeand in school. Students oftenshare their transformation from achild dealing with hopelessnessand low self-esteem to a youngadult looking forward to a futurebright with rewards and opportu-nity.

Bonnie S. is a parent of one ofour students who graduated fromthe Center a couple of years ago.Bonnie offered to share herdaughter’s experience andsuccess.“To be indebted to an institu-

tion and its members for makinga profound difference in the life ofour child is what the Children'sDyslexia Center means to myfamily. My name is Bonnie

Szramowski, and my daughterTara is dyslexic. To watch anychild struggle with a learningdisability is heartwrenching! Notonly does the learning disabilityaffect the child but the family aswell. Every night after dinner Iworked with our daughter onreading and hired Tara's teachersto tutor her to no avail. Withoutthe right “tools”, nothing workedcausing friction and frustrationwithin our family. The Children'sDyslexia Center changed all ofour lives immensely by teachingTara how to read using the Orton-Gillingham reading approach thusgiving her success in school.Fast-forward to 2016. Tara just

finished her first semester as afreshman at IUP with a 3.28GPA. Our family knows that thissuccess is possible because ofthe teaching at the DyslexiaCenter as well as the generosityof the Masons. Without each andeveryone of you this would nothave been possible! Thank youso much for caring enough tochange the lives of children bornwith dyslexia!”

Bonnie and Tara’s story iswhat we are about. We provideparents and students with some-one who not only cares butunderstands the problems thattheir child is facing. It is thisindividual and child specificapproach that leads to the manystudent successes experiencedat our Children’s Dyslexia Center.

Thank you so much for yourcontinued support!
