Sweet Summertime is here! Right now, is the perfect time to get out of the house and enjoy some fun with family and friends at the Club. We
have lots of activities scheduled throughout the summer months. I know I love seeing all the kids out of school and soaking up the sun. It's not too late to sign the kids up for KE Summer Camp (www.kecamps.com), Indoor Tennis Camp and/or our Junior Golf Program. Also, make sure and get the kids ready with their duct tape and cardboard for the Annual Cardboard Regatta Boat Race scheduled for Monday, June 21. It's definitely going to be a good time for all! And with Father's Day right
around the corner, what better gift than a Golf Membership to BCCC or a gift card to the Pro Shop?
I would also like to announce that we are offering exclusive advertisement space in our newsletter to our members. This newsletter is distributed to approximately 2,100 homes and that number is certainly growing with all our new memberships! We have a variety of ad sizes available to fit every need and budget. I have information packets available in my office. You can also give me a call for more details 985.635.0201.
Willis & Connie Stelly
Moving to Man-deville was a no-brainer for Con-nie and Willis Stelly formerly of Baton Rouge. When they both retired from
LSU, Willis began playing golf every day except on days the course was closed. They were one of the first to buy a lot in University Club and as a retiring gift Connie gave him a membership to the golf club. Being in a golf community fits them well. Their daughter, deShea and hubby James Richardson, have lived in Beau Chêne for over 15 years. When their other daughter, deLynn, moved here to take the head girls’ basketball position at Lakeshore High, they decided the city was calling them to relocate. After living in an apartment, they were ready to have a house to call home. It didn’t take much time to conclude Beau Chêne met all their needs…golfing for Willis and being a few streets over from their three grandkids. Charlotte is a senior basketball player and Constance a Skipper’s dancer at Mandeville High. JP plays whatever sport is in season. To his Paw Paw’s satisfaction, he is an outstanding ath-lete. They hope to convince their son, Will (who lives in Nashville), to join them here.
Laef Lowther & Emily Coia
Laef is a Man-deville native and Emily is from Pennsylvania but lived Uptown for over a decade. Laef graduated from St. Paul's and the College
of Charleston, where he played on the golf team. He is the Gulf Coast Sales Manager at Imtra, a systems supplier for the marine in-dustry, along with being an avid golfer.
Emily is a graduate of Tulane and received her MBA from San Diego State University. She is the COO of Jefferson Financial, Inc., a publishing company which produces Gold Newsletter and the New Orleans Investment Conference, and also serves on the board of the Green Project.
Their family includes two daughters, Laney (8) and Sutton (6), and two rescue dogs. They enjoy traveling and are all looking for-ward to spending time in the pool this sum-mer and making new friends!

ummer is upon us and that means a shift in Beau Chêne CC activities with increased focus on the aquatics facility, families, camps
and more…
Aquatics • The aquatics facility with its THREE pools began 7 days/week operations with a full complement of lifeguards and Cabana personnel as of Friday, May 28. If you are interested in booking birthday parties or other similar events at the pool, please feel free to reach out to either Don Beaver or Ashlee Guess-Richardson accordingly.
• The Swim Team is literally “busting at the seams” which clearly reflects the growing numbers of young families that are now calling Beau Chêne…home. Please be sure to review the Club emails and this issue of the Club newsletter as to the Swim Team schedule (swim team practices in the morning, swim meets, fun nights, etc.) so as not to interfere with your pool usage.
Families• As stated above, Beau Chêne continues to “get younger” and the Club’s programming reflects that fact too with the afore-mentioned Swim Team and overall aquatics activities, weekly KE Camps, Family Night w/BINGO! (Wednesday, June 23 this month), Junior Golf Academies, Junior Tennis Camps, Cardboard Boat Regatta, Fourth of July festivities and so much more!
• The Cardboard Boat Regatta will take place on Monday, June 21st at 5:30pm. Best of Show judging will take place at 6pm with races at 6:30pm. NOTE: “Boats” should be constructed (cardboard and duct tape) such that they can transport at least one “shipmate” the length of the pool.
• Naturally, Independence Day Festivities will occur on Sunday, July 4 with a later schedule of activities as a result of church involvement. The

• Golf Events include a Men’s Golf Association Tournament on Saturday, June 3; a two-day BCCC Tourney Series Event and Senior Championship on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 and the BCLGA two-day Member-Member on Tuesday, June 22 and Wednesday, June 23.
•Coming in July…Dungeness Crab Dinner on Saturday, July 10, Family Night w/BINGO! on Wednesday, July 21 and the soldout Caymus/Wagner Family Gourmet Wine Dinner on Saturday, July 24.
At the time of authoring this column
the Club is involved with a group of Beau Chene residents planning a Krewe of Keys Appreciation Day including a dinner on Wednesday, June 16 – in an effort to honor the workers (and their families) who provide our community’s trash removal services with gracious smiles and a tireless work ethic FOUR times every week regardless of weather or pandemic issues! An account has been established to accommodate those of us who would like to contribute financially to these recognition efforts. We will keep you posted with details as they become known in upcoming emails.
Last, but certainly not least, I hope each of you will reach out to make our new Food and Beverage Manager Jeff McKeithen feel welcome to the BCCC team! Jeff is originally from Monroe, LA, is a graduate of
LSU – yes, Geaux Tigers and resides on the Northshore. He brings more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry with the last 12 of those years as an integral member of the management team in the Dickie Brennan and Company family of New Orleans restaurants. Jeff’s training and expertise lead him to two main goals: (1) establishing and maintaining the highest of service standards and (2) creating an amazing dining experience and environment for both members/guests and his fellow service team members.
Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge in the world of Bourbon as his KDA (Kentucky Distillers Association) designation attests to, so be on the lookout for future bourbon tastings, classes and dinners.
Next time you’re in the Club, stop by and meet an exceptional management team member, Jeff McKeithen.
See you at the Club!

2021 Summer Junior Golf Programming
This accomplishment actually occurred in February of this year. On February 16, Keith Kline made an “Albatross” on # 10 Magnolia which was witnessed by Jeff Blackman, Joel Childress, and Doug Cristina. Just a reminder an Albatross is a 2 on a par 5! Keith holed a 5 wood…great shot and sorry for the delay in reporting.

Golf Course Newsby Robert Main, Golf Course Superintendent
uring heavy rain periods like those we have been having, I would like to explain to the membership
what the maintenance crew has to go through to get the golf course back into shape. As of May 18th, we have had over fifty-two inches of rain this year with more due this week.
I have received numerous questions on our bunkers this year because we have not had the time after the rains to get our bunkers back in playable condition before it has rained again. When this process happens, we have to start the process all over again and it seems as if we have not touched the bunkers in weeks. We have pumped bunkers this year more than we ever have hoping it will dry up and we just keep getting more rain. Bunker maintenance is a very labor-intensive part of golf course maintenance and requires substantial man hours. When the rain has stopped, we begin pumping the water out of the bunkers and requires
D sending out three crew members to begin the removal of water. This process will take almost two eight-hour days for all three crew members to complete this task. The sand in the bunkers will still be wet and “soupy” necessitating that we push the sand back up to the edges of the bunkers from where it has washed out. This process will take another two full days with three machines operated by three crew members. From this point and time, we then have to rake and re-work the bunkers on both sides to get them playable for our members. We will still have wet spots in the low areas of the bunkers that are not playable that will require additional drying and another machine rake before getting back to a playable condition. With the rainfall we have been receiving this year, it will take us almost four complete days to work the bunkers into playable conditions. The rough and deeper rough have only been cut once completely in the last two months due to the rain. We have been unable to get to these areas without making a mess or getting stuck. We have been pushing the

envelope by cutting earlier than normal, but due to the amount of rain we have received, it just has not been feasible. So far, we have been able to cut the fairways, tee, and collars and approaches at least once per week, but our members are accustomed to at least two cuttings per week. We appreciate your patience in this matter and we hope the rain stops and warm dry weather will come our way.
As a friendly reminder, please remember to adhere to cart path rulings, repair ball marks on greens, fill your divots with sand and rake all footprints as you exit the bunkers. Following these rules and practicing proper course etiquette will go a long way in helping us maintain course conditions. (BCCC No. 3525). WHydration and Heat Illness
ith the hottest time of the year upon us, it’s time to take note of the dangers high heat and humid-
ity can inflict on the active person. Exposure to prolonged amounts of heat without ade-quate fluid intake can cause various types of heat-related illnesses. These dangers include dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Symptoms of each are dif-ferent and it is important to understand each and the appropriate treatments.
Types of Heat-IllnessesDehydrationEvery cell, tissue and organ in your body requires water to function. It regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, transports nu-trients, removes waste and circulates blood. Your body cannot perform these functions properly if you don’t have enough water or fluids to carry out these normal functions. If you don’t replace these lost fluids, you will get dehydrated.
Symptoms include dry mouth, thirst, irrita-bility, headache, dizziness, cramps, excessive fatigue, dark-colored urine and confusion. The best way to rehydrate immediately is to drink water. If you are a salty sweater (fre-quent muscle cramps), be sure to replace sodium with water preferably through a bal-anced diet.
Heat CrampsHeat cramps are the mildest form of heat injury and consists of painful muscle cramp-ing and spasms that occurs during and after intense exercise and sweating in high heat. Usually, the pain occurs in the calf and ham-strings.
Treatments include putting the muscle on a light stretch, standing if possible, and walk-ing on your heels if the cramp is in the calf or hamstring. Hydrating and replacing so-dium and potassium (bananas are the eas-iest source) will speed recovery. As soon as cramps subside and activity is comfortable, it is usually safe to return to activities.
Heat ExhaustionHeat exhaustion occurs when the body is unable to cool itself properly and, if left un-treated, can progress to heat stroke.
Symptoms include dizziness, dehydration, nausea, stomach cramps, muscle cramps, diarrhea, profuse sweating, low blood pres-sure upon standing, loss of coordination and difficulty continuing exercise.
If you experience any of these symptoms, move to a cool environment and remove excessive clothing. Drink plenty of fluids, especially drinks to replace lost salt, take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath and ap-ply other cooling measures such as fans and ice towels immediately. Be sure to monitor heart rate, blood pressure and core tempera-ture, and remember this condition can trig-ger heat stroke.
Sufferers should avoid exercise in the heat for several days. Once you are symptom free and fully hydrated, seek physician clearance to return to activity.
Heat StrokeHeat stroke, the most severe form of heat illness, occurs when the body’s heat-regulat-ing system is overwhelmed by excessive heat and is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate medical attention.
Symptoms include confusion, weakness, vomiting, dehydration, decreased mental activity, combativeness, increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, and a tempera-ture above 104 degrees. Heat stroke suffer-ers should be taken to the nearest emergen-cy facility immediately where you will likely receive aggressive whole-body water cooling and fluid replacement by IV.
A physician will have to determine the timeframe for return to activity based on the severity of symptoms. And if you expe-rience heat stroke once, remember, you will be more susceptible to heat in the future.
PreventionObviously, this is the most important con-cept. Consume more fluids than you think you may need, when you are thirsty you are
probably already dehydrated. Exercise in the coolest parts of the day or in an air-condi-tioned area. Wear light colored, lightweight, lose-fitting clothing on hot days. Use pro-tection from the sun, wear a hat and sun-glasses and use an umbrella. Try to spend as much time indoors as possible on very hot and humid days.
How Much Water Should You Drink?• The U.S. National Academies of Scienc-es, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women. • While exercising, The American Council on Exercise recommends drinking: 17-20 ounces of fluid 2-3 hours before working out; another 8 ounces 20-30 minutes while exercising and 8 ounces post workout.• Is it possible to drink too much? The an-swer is yes. The kidneys can remove 20–28 liters of water per day, but they cannot ex-crete more than 0.8 to 1.0 liters per hour, drinking more than this can be harmful.References:•https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/condi-tions-and-diseases/dehydration-and-heat-stroke•https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/warn-ing.html•https://www.acefitness.org/education-and-resourc-es/lifestyle/blog/6675/healthy-hydration/•https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/water/art-20044256

The heat is on with summer in full swing here at the tennis center! Summer tennis at Beau Chêne has an
awesome energy to it! Whether you choose to play a match or clinic on one of our two indoor courts or you’d rather enjoy a fun match with friends outside on a nice court in the shade, come play with us!
Our first big news this month is Coach Oscar has returned and is teaching again here at Beau Chêne! As many of you know, he is a great pro and we are thrilled to have him back! He will be teaching lessons for kids and adults and heavily involved in our Summer Junior Tennis Camps.
Speaking of summer camp, our tennis camp is so much fun for the kids and a great way to learn tennis and grow in our exciting sport. This is for kids of all ages, levels, and abilities. In addition to tennis camp for the
juniors, we also offer private lessons and match play days.
Adult tennis at Beau Chêne definitely has a lot happening this summer. As I am writing this article, our Ladies 3.0 team is competing at the State tournament in Baton Rouge for a chance to represent Louisiana at Sectionals in July. I will keep you posted on their progress! Summer also means that Mixed Doubles league season is here and the matches are always exciting and competitive! We have several teams participating and would love to get you on a team if you’re looking to play.
Also, for adults, the drop-in clinics are an easy way to come play tennis without having to commit to a match. Check out our current clinic schedule! We have lots of opportunities for you to drop in and be a kid again for an hour...you’ll be so glad you
did! If you feel you aren’t quite ready for a clinic with multiple participants, come take a lesson with me or any of our great pros and we’ll get you ready to play and enjoy a match or clinic in no time!
Summer tennis is fun...if you’re interested in getting on a team or getting plugged into our tennis program, please call the tennis desk or stop by. As always, we’ll be glad to take care of you!
