Welcome New Staff SENIOR ACTION HOLDS
Alzheimer’s Support Group & Education Programs
As part of Senior Action’s mission to reach seniors throughout Greenville County with resources and information they need to
live healthier, more fulfilling lives, our site in Slater/Marietta hosts a monthly support group for caregivers of people with dementia. Our support group facilitators are Rebecca Farmer, Site Director at the Slater site, and Elise Willis, daughter of a Senior Action member who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease. We partner with the Alzheimer’s Association in providing this important element of support that gives caregivers an opportunity to connect with others who care for a person with dementia. Caregivers share their experiences, support one another, and learn more about the disease processes involved with different types of dementia. The support group is open to any caregiver of a person with dementia, whether or not their diagnosis is Alzheimer’s Disease.Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia is important. Although there is not yet a cure, early diagnosis allows caregivers and those diagnosed with the disease an opportunity to seek out resources and information that will help them as the disease progresses. Because early diagnosis is so important, Rebecca has trained with the Alzheimer’s Association to present “Know The 10 Signs,” an informational presentation that helps seniors and caregivers recognize the early signs of memory problems that could mean a person has dementia. Rebecca has presented the program at the Senior Action locations in Greer and the Greenville County Aquatic Complex. Knowing the 10 early warning signs can help seniors get the early diagnosis that could give them the resources and time to prepare so they are able to remain at home longer and maintain a better quality of life. Early diagnosis can also help caregivers avoid becoming overwhelmed by giving them the help and support they need as they care for their loved one.
When you’re thinking about ways to improve your health, what are some of the things that come to mind? You might try to eat more vegetables or exercise more often, but what about volunteering
your time? There are now thousands of studies that show volunteering can improve overall health, specifically in senior adults. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, seniors that volunteer their time have lower mortality rates than their peers even when factors like health, economic status, and gender are controlled. Believe it or not, there are new studies that suggest volunteering improves brain elasticity which can slow the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Spending time helping others may be just as beneficial as eating that forkful of extra broccoli!
Join other Senior Action members and consider adding a volunteer opportunity to your wellness plan. Enrich the lives of others, make new friends, have fun, and improve your health all at the same time!

Senior Action Booster Club Hits the Ground Running
In August, members of Senior Action formed the inaugural Booster Club to help support our organization through fundraising projects.
The purpose of the Booster Club is to partner with staff to help raise funds to support all of the programs provided to the members at Senior Action.
The Booster Club’s first project was hosting a cake walk at the Harvest Festival in October.
The next project the Booster Club has organized is a fundraiser produced by Funds2orgs, a leading social enterprise in North America for shoe drive fundraising. See below for more information.
To join the Senior Action Booster Club, sign up at the front desk for one of the upcoming meetings.

UNDERCONSTRUCTION
A letter from Tracey
As we enter this holiday season, many of us celebrate in different ways. Whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, they all
share the spirit of giving.
I’m a giver, sometimes to the extreme. I get joy from trying to figure out a unique way to bless someone or make their day special instead of thinking about what I’m going to receive in return. I have been known to give away my lunch or donate money to help strangers in need. Don’t get me wrong, I still get excited when I open a package or someone surprises me, but my greatest joy comes from giving to others. Giving helps me put life into perspective when I am stressing over the small stuff. Giving is such a valuable lesson to teach my children.
There are many ways you can give to people during this holiday season through Senior Action. Think about friends and family who may benefit from being a member and give them the gift of membership or a class or a trip. We offer gift certificates at the front desk for any of our programs. For that family member who is hard to buy for, give a donation in their honor and we will send them a note telling them how their gift made a difference. As you think of what Senior Action means to you all year, give a gift to help support what our work does for thousands of seniors all year.Warm Wishes, Tracey Easterling Director of Development

This years’ event was just AMAZING. From setting the date, recruiting of professionals and celebrities, to the cast orientation, sponsors, rehearsals, ticket purchasers, more rehearsals, costumes, donors, more rehearsals, new trophies and each step along the way, Senior Action is proud to announce our largest fundraising total to date. Our dancers and sponsors raised $151,000 to support the programs and services at Senior Action.
Heather Devine was our Fundraising Champion, at $23,140, Steve Buckingham came in second at $22,490 and Sangeeta Hardy placed third at $19,020. All three of these dancers made our top 10 fundraisers of all time.
Clara Sowell and Cesar Jaramillio stole the show with a perfect score on their dance performance to become the 2018 DWCS Dance Champions.
Gail and Bryon Stokes won the 50/50 “Heads or Tails” game and walked away with a $1,100 cash prize. The night ended with everyone celebrating on the dance floor to tunes from the band, Hit Mob.
A huge thank you to all of our dancers (celebrity and pro), the emcees, judges, staff, volunteers, and all of the people who made this our best event yet. A special thanks to Casey Reid of Eleven Events for producing this event for the 9th year.
